Contest alert: Win a copy of "Taboo" by Jess Michaels!
Cassandra Willows has taken adversity and turned it into wild success. Not only is she one of the Empire’s most sought after seamstresses, servicing the very wealthy ladies of the ton, but in secret she creates erotic toys for high class courtesans and randy gentleman. Cassandra has but one regret: The Earl of Blackhearth, Nathan Manning, who once wished to marry her and will never forgive her for not showing up when they were to elope.
Nathan has been living in India and has returned to London at the behest of his ill father. His one duty is to find a suitable bride, but a chance encounter with Cassandra wipes that thought from his mind and replaces it with both desire and a need for revenge. So he blackmails his former love into a passionate affair. But the closer the two become physically, the harder it becomes for them to block out the feelings they once shared. And the closer Nathan comes to the devastating truth that tore them apart.
Okay, people, let's have some FUN! Today I'm giving away a copy of Jess Michaels' TABOO, a very sexy romance that has a strongly emotional storyline between two former lovers thrown back into each others' lives.
I like the title of this book for a variety of reasons, one of which is the inspiration behind today's contest. All are welcome to participate, but only those that follow the rules will be entered to win a copy of Jess' book. [Note: I try to make the contests simple, and hopefully fun. I ask that you please DO NOT include your email address as I will post the name of the winner here and it is up to them to contact me within a week of the winner being announced]. All you have to do is answer the question and your name will be entered to win.
~ What actually does taboo mean? Definition: declare sacred or forbidden ~
Most of us have some little indulgence we like to partake in that we know we shouldn't. Maybe you eat a slice of cheesecake for breakfast every morning, when you know it's bad for you. Or you like to buy scratch-off tickets instead of paying the latest credit card bill. Or it could be you got lucky with your boyfriend/husband in your office at work...oh what a delicious taboo that would be!
So what I wanna know is...
What is your sweetest taboo?
It can be real or it could be one you imagine would be really good, like plunking $1000 down at a roulette table in Vegas, or nude sunbathing. Not my particular taboos, but they could be someone else's. Me, I'm pretty boring, but I have a very vivid imagination *g* I'm not asking for deep, dark secrets here, just wondering what is that one temptation you know is so bad for you but you can't resist. I think there's a whole lot that could fit that description.
Contest will run until 5pm CST on Sunday, August 2nd, so please be sure to post a comment before then if you'd like to be entered in the contest. A random winner will be drawn, and those who also comment on the interview from yesterday will get an additional entry in the contest. As I mentioned earlier, as long as mail can be delivered to you, anyone is eligible to participate. Good luck, and thanx for playin'!

Please welcome Jenna Petersen, or is it Jess Michaels.....
Hello all my little lovelies, thank you so much for stopping by. Today I have with us a guest, the multi-talented and very busy Jenna Petersen, or in some circles, Jess Michaels. I have been a fan since I read her JM story "Ancient Pleasures" in a Secrets volume a few years ago, and now I am seriously hooked on her erotic romances. But she also writes some great stories as JP. I have been fortunate to meet up with Jenna twice now, and she's a total sweetheart. I love knowing she's not that far away from where I live - within the same state! - so it would be awesome to catch her at another booksigning in the near future.
But it wasn't until I read "Taboo" that I decided to find out if I was lucky enough to get her on my blog. Guess what? I am! This is one of the Jess Michaels' books, very sexy but also one that strongly concentrates on the relationship of these two characters. I enjoyed it immensely . So much so that I decided to have a contest to win a copy, but I'll save that for tomorrow. Today however Jenna might have a minute or two to stop by, so anyone that posts today and tomorrow, leaving a comment and/or a question (maximum of 2 entries), will be entered in the contest to win their very own copy of "Taboo". It's pretty much a stand-alone book, briefly mentions a couple from a previous Jess Michaels' story, but you certainly don't need to read those first. If you'd like to find out more about the book, here is my review of Taboo. And in the meantime, let's visit for a time with Jenna and get to hear what this very busy lady has to say, and what she's up to these days! S~ Jenna, thank you so much for spending some time here at my place. I'm really excited to have you here to talk about your books. But that's not all you do. Jenna, you are one busy lady. In addition to writing as both Jenna Petersen and Jess Michaels, you are also the webmistress over at Passionate Pen. How do you find time to juggle all these writing responsibilities?
Jenna: Very carefully. LOL Actually, I’ve cut back a bit. The Passionate Pen is now being updated once a month rather than every Monday (though I think I’ll go up to twice a month after August and settle there). And I’m really focusing on writing and writing a bit slower lately. Burn out is an easy thing for any writer and I was getting close to being there in the last year or so.
S~ Tell us a little about Passionate Pen, which is as the website states, a resource for romance writers who are pursuing their dream. How did you get started and where do you see the site going over the next few years?
Jenna: I started Passionate Pen 10 years ago when I finished my first book but couldn’t find an online resource that listed all the romance publishers and their submission guidelines. I figured if I wanted that, someone else might, so I created it. Over the years I’ve added a lot, including an agent list, articles for writers and of course the diary of my own journey toward and beyond publication. This year I’ve been slightly overwhelmed, so I cut back to updating every month from every week, but starting in August, I’ll be going back up to updating twice a month (so every other week). The site is ever changing and I’m always adding new information there.
S~ You combine your two pen names, Jenna and Jess, on one blog. Other than the fact that your Jess Michaels' books are described as more sexually explicit yet still romance, what other differences exist between the two personas?
Jenna: I don’t actually have a blog, but the two pen names are on one website. Actually JessMichaels.com still exists, it just forwards back to the Jess Michaels page on http://www.jennapetersen.com/ Updating two sites with basically much of the same info (appearances, news, releases) seemed redundant since I don’t keep my two names secret. Really, the basic difference between Jess and Jenna is that my erotic romances almost always have a conflict based in something sexual. The plot is driven as much by the love scenes as anything else. This makes them germane to the plot at all times.
S~ Out of all your books, do you have a book or series that was the most fun to write? One that involved the most interesting research?
Jenna: It’s hard to pick a “favorite” book because I’ve loved writing everything I’ve done. Usually my greatest love is whatever I’m writing at the time and whatever I’ve just had out. So at the moment that I’m writing this, my favorite book that is out is HER NOTORIOUS VISCOUNT and my favorite book I’ve written is my August 2010 release, AN UNWANTED DUCHESS. But in a few months it will change because the first book in the Billingham Bastards series, WHAT THE DUKE DESIRES (November 2009) will be out and I’ll be starting to write the third book in the series, which features Caleb and Marah from LESSONS FROM A COURTESAN.
S~ What appeals to you most about the type of stories you write?
Jenna: I’ve always tended to lean toward sensual, dark stories, so it’s been very naturally for me to write that way. I like the unfolding of the story and the little character surprises I tend to stumble upon with every book. And I like in the end feeling like I’ve told a story where the couple could really make it. They’ve grown together as people.
S~ Like Lori Foster, you're a big fan of UFC. Any plans to incorporate this passion into your writing, or it more of an outside interest?
Jenna: Actually, I already have. My April 2009 release, HER NOTORIOUS VISCOUNT features a hero who fought in London’s Underground. Fighting is a big deal in that book (literally and figuratively). Since I write historical, it would be difficult to go beyond what I’ve done, but I do love the sport.
S~ In October, you're coming out with the first book in a new Jenna Petersen series. Can you tell us a little bit about the series and what the common thread is in these books?
Jenna: The series is called “The Billingham Bastards” and the first book is WHAT THE DUKE DESIRES (October 27 – technically it’s actually a November release). In it my hero, the Duke of Billingham, discovers his father is not all he seems and sets out to find out more. The heroine is a woman bent on revenge who comes to destroy the good family name. The second and third books are about bastard sons that my hero finds his father sired.
S~ And in February, book 3 of Jess Michaels' Albright Sisters will be released. What can we expect to find with the third sister, and how many more books do you have planned in this series?
Jenna: The third book is NOTHING DENIED and is the last book in the Albright Sisters series that began with EVERYTHING FORBIDDEN and SOMETHING RECKLESS (and is lightly tied to TABOO, my recent May 2009 release). My heroine, Beatrice is the spoilt younger sister of my first two heroines and she definitely needs a hero to tame her, which is exactly what I gave her. This is the final book in the series, but readers who are interested in what happens to youngest sister Winifred, you will get resolution for her, as well.
S~ What is a typical writing day like for you? With your busy schedule, how do you keep yourself from getting burned out?
Jenna: It’s a constant struggle for me to balance my life-life with my writing life because I do tend to do so much. But I’ve just had to cut back. I’m writing fewer pages a day, I’m updating Passionate Pen less and I’m picking and choosing which promotional efforts to pursue more carefully. I write full time and write from home, so I’m pretty much always at work. I just have to focus on leaving the “office” in my mind more often.
S~ How do you feel about promo: do you think authors should spend a significant amount of time promoting their books, visiting blogs, creating social networking opportunities like Facebook and myspace, or do you believe the work should speak for itself?
Jenna: I suppose in a perfect world that would work, but unfortunately for a writer starting out you have to get people to buy your book before the writing CAN speak for itself. So places like Facebook, MySpace, a personal website and other promotional efforts hopefully widen your net of people who are looking for your book and buying it, thereby creating a larger core fanbase. Obviously the writing has to be the most important thing, but having no promotional effort at all may not be a good idea in the current climate.
S~ Other than to keep writing, what has been the most valuable advice you've gotten about writing?
Jenna: Jennifer Crusie presented to a library in Washington state when I still lived there and she said to write with your head down. In other words, you write without having other people in your head, without correcting yourself while you do it. I’ve written that way ever since.
S~ How do you like to unwind? It's evident by your website you like movies and music, so what else do you like to do on your "down" time? What are some of your guilty pleasures?
Jenna: Like I said earlier, I tend to be in the office in my head a lot, so down time is a bit relative. I do like video games along with movies. I read when I can. My husband and I have also really gotten into travel. We went to China in March 2008 and it was wonderful. I get to pick our destination next, so I’m thinking Europe, though I don’t know where. There’s a wonderful train tour of the Alps that looks remarkable and I’m leaning that way.
S~ If you had a whole afternoon to yourself and one book you could read, whether a re-read or one you've been dying to get your hands on, what would it be?
Jenna: Really at this point, any book. When I’m writing, I don’t read much and I tend to find other things to do because my brain is done with stories and reading text. But on the way to RWA National I had a couple of books to read, so I’m excited to have a few hours to myself to do that.
S~ How have you seen your characters evolve since you started writing? Have you had to make considerable personality changes to suit current times, or do you like to be bold and dare to color outside the lines of current trends?
Jenna: I guess I don’t think I’ve ever written characters to “trend”. They come more from a natural progression during my pre-writing process. The evolution I’ve seen more is just improvement in my writing, which comes from writing more books and having good editorial input from my editor. But I’ve never thought it was smart to chase trend. You can never catch it and the books lose their heart.
S~ What type of hero and heroine appeals to you, and have you ever written a character that you just didn't like? If so, how did you make it work?
Jenna: I really love broken bad boys and I’ve written a few like Dominic from SCANDALOUS, Grant from SEDUCTION IS FOREVER, Justin from LESSONS FROM A COURTESAN and Nicholas from HER NOTORIOUS VISCOUNT. But I also tend to write some very decent men thrown into situations they must face. Tristan from FROM LONDON WITH LOVE is a good example, also the hero in my upcoming book, Simon in WHAT THE DUKE DESIRES. Now Lucas in DESIRE NEVER DIES d oesn’t really fit either. He’s not that… broken but he is a bad boy. He’s sort of more your Hugh Jackman type rather than your Russell Crowe if that makes sense.
For my heroines, I like women with values. A lot of my women are taking charge in ways that break the mold. All my Ladies Spies ladies, for example. Also Jane in HER NOTORIOUS VISCOUNT, Victoria in LESSONS FROM A COURTESAN and Lillian, the heroine in WHAT THE DUKE DESIRES.
I’ve only written one character who I haven’t liked and that is Beatrice in the upcoming NOTHING DENIED. In the previous Albright Sisters books, she was such a pill. Just not very nice and very spoiled. Redeeming her in her story was a challenge, but I found that the more I wrote her, the more I understood her and I hope readers will come to like her and understand her, as well.
S~ Do you have a book of the heart, or do each of them affect you as strongly, just perhaps in different ways?
Jenna: I actually don’t believe in the whole concept of “Book of the Heart”. In fact, I wrote an article on that subject at Passionate Pen: http://www.passionatepen.com/book_of_my_what_article.htm I have never written a book that I wasn’t head over heels in love with. It’s just too much work, blood, sweat and tears to do anything else.
S~ Do you remember the first adult romance you ever read? How old were you, and did you know from that point on that you wanted to write?
Jenna: I came very late in life to romance. In fact, I’d already decided to write it (because it’s “easy”, you know HA!!) before I read much of it. I think my first romance was MINX by Julia Quinn. And I thought, uh-oh. This is both awesome and proof that it’s going to be HARD.
S~ What is Jenna and Jess working on next? What can we expect to see in the next 6-9 months?
Jenna: Right now NOTHING DENIED is the next Jess book, which comes out in February 2010. I’m really focused on my Jenna work presently. In November 2009 the first Billingham Bastards book hits shelves, WHAT THE DUKE DESIRES. And I’m nearly done with the first draft of the second book, AN UNWANTED DUCHESS, which will hit shelves in August 2010. And then I’ll be starting the third book before the year ends. So lots coming down the pike from Jenna.
S~ Any last words, anything you'd like to add?
Jenna: Thanks so much for having me today! Readers can read excerpts of all my books at http://www.jennapetersen.com and look for my *Day-By-Day diary of my adventures at RWA in Washington, DC at www.passionatepen.com in the next couple of weeks. (*Jenna actually got this back to me before RWA, but I wasn't ready to post it - my bad. Still check it out and see what she was up to while in D.C. for RWA!) S ~ Thanx again Jenna! Sounds like some exciting stories are lined up, and I personally cannot wait for NOTHING DENIED! I'll be sure to stop by to find out what else you're up to.
***And be sure to stop by tomorrow for your chance to win a copy of Taboo. A special thank you to Jenna for answering all my questions, and for writing some of the books that are on my keeper shelves :) **** Labels: author interviews, Jenna Petersen, Jess Michaels

The Kreativ rules state that:
Once you receive this award you are to list seven of your favorite things and then nominate seven other blogs.
The lovely and talented Kati nominated me for this fun award, and though I basically suck at award follow-up, she must have had enough faith to figure I'd spread the love, so that's what I'm gonna do.
1. Steak & shrimp. My current favorite meal. I am such a carnivore, and there's nothing like a tender, juicy steak cooked to medium perfection - not too tough, not too bloody. And I love seafood, shrimp especially, whether it's fried or grilled. Yummy. Put them together and you have a divine meal. Add some flavorful wine and it's ambrosia. And while you're at it, why not add a slice of chocolate mousse cheesecake. Might as well, though with all these calories I've eaten for the week.
2. Anne of Green Gables & Anne of Avonlea starring Megan Follows. I could watch this 100 times and not be bored. Watching Anne grow up, and having Gilbert fall in love with her, going off to school and become a teacher herself. Anne's a dreamer with a penchant for getting into mischief, and oh what an amazing character she is. A kindred spirit. Everytime I watch the scene where she's coming home to Green Gables carrying a bouquet of flowers and she sees Marilla, I tear up. Gets me everytime.
3. The midwest. Yeah I bitch about the cold and having to drive in a blizzard but this place owns me. Except for the fact we're living on a fault line that my mother is convinced will erupt any day now, I am quite content with where I live, and though moving might be exciting, I don't think I'd actively try to leave. It's not too much, or too little, but has just enough of everything to make it interesting. Sitting here thinking about it, listening to the cicadas (?) and feeling the warm summer breeze makes me very happy. Then thee's knowing I could go downtown and see Lake Michigan or any of the various historical locations, take the elevator to the top of SEARS Tower (Willis? Huh) and see the amazing view of the city, or go to O'Hare and feel the excited buzz of travelers. I love airports - they've always fascinated me. ORD is one of the best.
4. Faith No More. This was my brother's music, but I developed a strange and inappropriate crush on the very weird and twisted Mike Patton, even though he sounded horrible live, and totally dug 2 of their albums, The Real Thing & Angel Dust, the former so much that I wore it out. Twice. I was obsessed, and those albums are still among my all-time favorites. True, I'm seriously disturbed, but I don't care. I just loved 'em. Obviously I still do.
5. Dawson's Creek. Yeah, I'll cop to this one, especially during the Pacey/Joey years. When he kisses her by the side of the road - swoon. Joey admitting to being attracted to him. Their secret relationship. Dawson finding out. Great tunes in that episode. The "let's spend the summer on a boat" seaon finale. I loved it all. Shamelessly, completely. It's not legendary like BtVS, but it'll do.
6. Bath & Body Works night-blooming jasmine lotion & body spray. I'm wearing it right now, and it's just the thing for warm summer evenings. The scent always puts me in a good mood. Not too strong, lightful floral, not sickeningly so. Rather sensual. Makes me feel pretty.
7. Netflix. I used to be so obsessed with t.v. that I'd watch like 5 + hours a day, so I gave it up for quite a long time, and I missed out on quite a few addictive shows. Now I've decided I can control my addiction, so I've been catching up in the last year or so. Gilmore Girls, House, Carnivale, Entourage are just a few of the shows I've been glomming. It's a cool concept, and I can keep the DVDs for quite some time without incurring late fees. I love it.
Now for the blogs, in no particular order but who probably have received this award at least once already:

Spotlight: E - Janet Evanovich
In this installment of my author spotlight, we come across the first author I have not actually met yet, so it's going to be more about her series than it is about her. I have to admit I was a little late to the party, arriving probably right around the time book 7 or 8 was being released. I'd heard loud rumblings about Janet Evanovich for awhile, but it wasn't until heard about the Joe vs. Ranger debate that my ears really perked up. I had to find out why Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter not so extraordinaire, had two prime hotties gunning for her. Still haven't quite figured it out, other than these guys think inept but endearing trainwrecks with big hair are the cat's pajamas. Don't get me wrong, because I love Stephanie to death, but come on! It should be me you're both fighting for! Anyway, the books of Janet Evanovich won't win any literary awards, and the predictability factor is set on a permanent high, but I'm totally good with that. I know what I'm getting: a lot of fluff, some giggles, a few naughty moments with whichever guy Steph is jonesing for this week, which by the way, these moments seem be getting less and less. Give me more! The biggest gripe I have is that most of the time Stephanie doesn't seem to be really enjoying herself as much as she should. I'm thinking it's guilt, brought on by her family, minus Grandma Mazur of course, because GM would shove Steph onto the nearest male, unless she was trying to jump him herself. Also, I don't think Ms. Plum has totally committed herself to the idea of marriage and all that comes with it, which is why I don't have a problem with her hooking up with Ranger from time to time. I believe she cares for Joe, but I'm not totally feeling the love there. Besides, once Stephanie chooses, it may go to the way of Moonlighting, or The X-Files. So we have an author here who's created an engaging set of characters: Stephanie, her parents, her sister, Joe, Ranger, Lula, Connie, Vinnie, her ex Dickie, her nemesis Joyce, and some other random people who flit in and out of her life. She has an on-again, off-again thing with Joe, and when they're off, chances are she's with Ranger. If I had one complaint, it's that when she's with Joe or Ranger, I wish we could experience more of their...togetherness. Ms. Evanovich is rather brief and sketchy with the details, and I like the details. So, are you a Joe or a Ranger girl? What's the appeal? Labels: Janet Evanovich, spotlight

"The Ugly Truth" (2009) a.k.a. a Stacy eye candy movie
The battle of the sexes heats up in Columbia Pictures' comedy The Ugly Truth. Abby Richter (Katherine Heigl) is a romantically challenged morning show producer whose search for Mr. Perfect has left her hopelessly single. She's in for a rude awakening when her bosses team her with Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler), a hardcore TV personality who promises to spill the ugly truth on what makes men and women tick. --© Sony Pictures
This movie doesn't reveal anything new about romantic comedies - there's still the stereotypical uptight heroine, the slightly smarmy, gorgeous hero who smirks at the heroine and always manages to put her in her place, and the lame scenario that inevitably throws them together so they are forced to spend copious time either working with each other or against each other for a common goal, i.e. competing for a promotion, forced to work on the same team, needing to get married to stay in the country... However one thing this movie has that a lot of others don't is actual, intentional humor. Raunchy, honest, no-holds-barred humor. Sure, Mike Chadway is the predictable, crass male chauvinist whose rude and and raw beliefs garner him quite a following, which leads him to network televison, and Abby Richter is the detail-oriented, list-obsessed anal producer who is forced to work with Mike. But they are so fun to watch that even the sexist comments and crude behavior aren't as offensive as you'd expect. When she meets a potential candidate who fits the criteria on her list for the perfect mate, she ends up realizing that maybe there is some merit to what Mike has to say, and he begins to give her lessons on attracting - and keeping - the man of her dreams. Of course all this time together predictably ends in them falling in love, but not without some obstacle (i.e. Abby's dream man) or another (Mike's fear of commitment). And there is the grand gesture of someone declaring their feelings. The inevitable climax occurs, and another romantic comedy is in the bag. Okay, with my blind lust of Gerard Butler, there's not much wrong he could have done here. There were moments that he was a complete pig who only dated women wearing bikinis who wrestled in jello, but what can I say? I really liked him in the movie, and I liked Katherine Heigl as well, even if I'm not sure I like her very much in real life, but she's damn good in these movies (i.e. "Knocked Up"), and it takes balls to put herself in some of these situations. Together they had enough chemistry to light San Francisco, and the scene in the restaurant with the vibrating panties was bloody hilarious. Even my friend Liz, who hated "Something About Mary" with a passion because of what she calls its nasty humor, loved this movie, and believe me, that's sayin' something. So will I be buying this on DVD? Hello? Haven't you been listening? Gerard?? You betcha I will! It's better than "The Proposal", and I thought that was cute, but this one was full of suggestive, dirty, sexy humor and laugh-out-loud goodness. Totally works for me. Rating: **** out of ***** Have you seen it?

Yummy goodness especially 4 Katiebabs & Julie James
idea that Ryan would make the perfect J.D. Jameson (the sexy hero in Julie's "Practice Makes Perfect") Now I'll admit that while Ryan has grown up very nicely, VERY nicely, I just don't see him having the incredible appeal to pull off the role of J.D. No offense to Ryan, he just doesn't have what it takes to be MY J.D. See my first encounter with RR is when he appeared on the show "Two Guys, A Girl & A Pizza Place", which later lost the pizza place. In it, he portrayed a total smart ass. He did a really convincing job, and was rather charming at it. Lovable, you could even say. And while Ryan doesn't make me swoon, he is put together in an extremely pleasing manner. Yeah, he's hot as hell. One of the most appealing things about him is that as gorgeous as he is, he's not afraid to look silly, or act undignified. There's not much more irresistible about a guy than the ability to be funny, to have a sense of humor, to not take himself too seriously. Yet he also makes for a great action hero, what with that body and lethal, sexy intensity. Yep, he definitely has that going for him as well. And here's one just because ;) Labels: Ryan Reynolds

Bad Boy crush: Robert Downey Jr.
Okay, I'll admit it. I've had a bit of a crush on Robert Downey Jr. ever since I saw him in "The Pick-Up Artist" alongside Molly Ringwald back in 1987. Robert portrayed Jack Jericho, a teacher and rather adorable womanizer who ends up meeting his match and for the first time ever, falls in love. As Jack, RDJ was funny and persistent and charming, but back then he had this space between his teeth that was rather distracting, so I wasn't completely enamored with his looks. I am so superficial that way. But he did catch my eye, even then.
It was actually when I saw him in "Less Than Zero" that I had that "wow" moment. In the movie, he was Julian...something or another, a wealthy drug addict who has such a serious habit that he owes his dealer a lot of money, and said dealer forces Julian to become a prostitute to pay for his habit. You got it. True hero material. But it cemented my thing for him, as totally inappropriate and unexplainable as it was. There was just some dangerous, heartbreaking quality that I was all melty for, maybe it was that sense that he was going along full speed ahead, about ready to crash and burn into a very hard and unforgiving brick wall, yet he was having the most incredible time while at it. RDJ loved the drugs. He was in a long-term relationship with Sarah Jessica Parker back then, but even that wasn't enough to get him to stop using. It took almost 2 decades. RDJ has an incredible and various of projects, most of which I haven't seen, if you can believe it. However there are some I did actually watch. There's "Johnny Be Good", and "Air America" with Mel Gibson. "Chances Are" with Cybil Shepherd. "Soap Dish" with a bunch of people. And of course "Chaplin". I watched "Wonder Boys" and he was probably the best reason to see it, imho. And a lot of movies I never saw...until " Iron Man". Oh and there was the Elton John video, and his appearance on "Ally McBeal", a show I didn't care much for but usually would watch when he was on. He definitely has that ability to draw me in. *** RDJ has come a loooong from those days of drug abuse and dating Sarah Jessica Parker. Now he's in a new movie, " Sherlock Holmes", set for release Christmas Day. He plays the main character in a movie I don't know if I want to see other than the fact he's in it. Because regardless of what he's done in his personal life, I think he's an amazing actor. Perhaps based on the decadent nature of the film, you can tell RDJ's hard-living ways have caught up with him, see it in the baggy eyes, the lines on his face, that smoker's voice, and I still get the vague impression that he's one step away from picking up a crack pipe. He's just got that edge to him, and I remember reading articles where he talked about how much he loved doing drugs. As he told a judge back in 1999, "It's like I have a loaded gun in my mouth and my finger's on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gunmetal." However I have always loved Robert Downey Jr., and I was so thrilled by his role in "Iron Man" last year. He was just amazing as Tony Stark, the incredibly sexy gazillionaire turned super hero, and I can't wait to see " Iron Man 2". I'm hoping things turn out just as well for him in real life. Here's to happy endings. Here's to Robert Downey Jr, one of my all-time favorite bad boys.

Eve of Destruction by S.J. Day (2009) - mini review
When you're learning to hunt demons, homework can be hell... Class is in, but Evangeline Hollis is far from being the star pupil. She's struggling to get through the required training to be a full-fledged Mark -- one of thousands of sinners forced to hunt demons for God. When her class goes on a week-long field trip to an abandoned military base, passing the course suddenly isn't just a matter of pride... it's a matter of life and death. There's a demon hidden among them, killing off Eve's classmates one by one. As the body count rises, a ragtag team of ghost hunters from a cable TV program unwittingly stumbles into the carnage. Now keeping the Mark system secret competes with the need to keep the "paranormal researchers" alive. With Cain on assignment and Abel investigating a new, terrifying class of demon, Eve must fly solo on her hunt to stop a killer before he strikes again.
Here we go, round 2 of Eve's adventure. *Warning: there may be spoilers* I don't know why I'm having such a difficult time writing reviews for this series, other than that there's just so much going on it's hard to string a coherent sentence together. Convinced? Yeah, it's just me who can't get it right. And it's definitely not because I don't like the series, because I do, very much. And I just can't do it justice, but here are a few thoughts, observations, and glowing recommendations. Eve has been marked for about 6 weeks now, and already she'd been killed. And brought back to life. Yet with everything that she'd gone through since being Marked, she still didn't feel any closer to God. But she does rejoice and in the glory, and wallow in a bit of guilt, brought on by fascination for two brothers. There's Alec Cain, her first love and currently her mentor, and there's Reed Abel, a one-time lover and now her handler. I'm going to go off on a little tangent here * which may lead to spoilers * and just comment on how much I like that Eve is a one-man woman. Here she is, in love with one brother and intensely attracted to the other, yet she is determined not to give in to the most wicked of temptations by sampling the goods of both brothers, especially these two specific siblings, Cain & Abel, who are definitely on opposing sides of the issue. And it's certainly not like they are making it easier on her. Eve is just as attracted to Reed's crude, raw sexuality as she is to Alec's more sensual, affectionate attentions, but only one man claims her heart. Of course there's a part of me that would so go for it if I were her, and enjoy the benefits of two smokin' hawt honeys, but I think the bitterness of regret would eat at me too much. However I will allow that the intimate and arousing encounter the three shared together was pretty imaginative and intense, incredibly emotional with the way it melded them all together in those moments they shared a connection. I mean, Cain and Abel hate each other, but they both care for Eve, and she cares for them, in different ways, so to have them all share this experience was erotic yet heart-wrenching all at the same time. But, but, then there's the whole deal with *again with the spoilers * Alec becoming an archangel in Raguel's absence, and his love being reserved strictly for God, basically leaving Eve in the dust. The poignant thing is that he's aware of the incredible distance between him and Eve, and tries to remind himself of how it once was, but it's like he's living in a bubble with Eve out the outside, and it bothers me that Eve is starting to feel neglected, which I can't blame her for, and I worry about what it might make her do. Of course it would really burn my butt if Eve had used this as an excuse to get down 'n dirty with Reed, and he seems to think she's back to "single status" again, so he's moving in for the seductive kill, albeit slowly. Grudgingly, I admit the fact he's feeling conflicted by all these emotional complications instead of just plain and simple lust makes the situation a bit more bearable. But as wildly sexy as Reed is, I'm rooting for Camp Alec. He's my guy. And I want him to be Eve's too. So enough with the mushy stuff. Let's get to the fighting. And the carnage. And ick, all that blood and gore because there does tend to be a lot of it. Everytime you turn around Eve seems to be covered in exploding body parts. I love that she is not the prime fighting champion that her destiny requires her to be. Instead Eve tends to be thrown into this crazy situations that she's not really prepared for, and it's rather refreshing to watch it roll out this way. She's going through a lot of the changes differently than anticipated, and she's treated differently because of it, but that's not necessarily a privilege, especially when time after time, it puts her in further danger, and almost manages to get her killed, again. So this really wasn't a review, but an overall observation of a really great series that will not end after just three books, which I'm so glad to know. I really feel like I connect with Eve as a heroine, and despite her super powers, she's still very much human, and flawed, and likable. Now it's off to start reading book #3, and since the anticipation is building at a rapid pace, I'm going to sign off now and hope you pick up these books and enjoy them as much as I do. Rating: **** 1/2 out of *****

My eyes are burning from all this television I've been watching but it's Buffy the Vampire Slayer, so that's okay. It's one of the more emotional seasons, so there's also a bit of tears. Even knowing what happens doesn't make it much easier, but it's good drama, you've got to admit. Here's a recap of the season....
1. When She Was Bad: Buffy's back in town after being gone all summer, and not adjusting well after having killed The Master. Gives Xander a dirty dance which he both loves and dreads, knowing that it's not really him she wants. And it hurts others she cares about, like Willow, and Angel, who tries to keep his distance despite his feelings. 2. Some Assembly Required: Oh I hate the episodes with body parts that are not exploding vampires. A former student who died is brought back to life, but doesn't want to spend his time alone, so his beloved brother decides to make him a girl. Can you say ewww? 3. School Hard: Spike! We meet this platinum bad boy for the first time, only we hate him along with his crazy girlfriend Drusilla. Well, we did the first time around. Knowing what we know now, he's really not so bad... We also learn that no one's going to hurt Joyce Summers' little girl, not even Spike. 4. INCA Mummy Girl: Oh it's tough being a teenager in these times, as an Inca girl, recently released from death, learns in this episode. Pretty but a bit rough around the edges. Xander falls in love and almost gets the kiss of death. 5. Repile Boy: fraternity. Xander in a bra. Peer pressure. Human sacrifice. You know, typical teenage hijinx. And sometimes you really do have to watch out for the nice ones. 6. Halloween: Buffy, Xander & Willow all take on the persona of their costumes. Quite amusing. And then there's Oz, who's rather taken with "that girl" but he doesn't even know her name. I love that he doesn't go for the obvious ones like Cordy. Oz is one cool dude, and it's great fun to see Xander and Willow in charge while Buffy cowers in dark corners. 7. Lie To Me: Buffy's grade school crush - Jason Behr before "Roswell". Hideous 90's gothwear. Angel reminisces about honing his brooding skills. Willow finally figures out what that Divinyls' song ("I Touch Myself") is all about. But the real core of the episode is how it feels to be lied to by the people you care about most. And that eternal life is not all it's cracked up to be. 8. The Dark Age: Giles' mysterious past. Finally we get to see more of the sexy but uptight Watcher. We learn he was a bit of a bad boy and rebelled against his destiny. Me like. 9. What's My Line Part 1: Career Day, and Buffy realizes she doesn't really get to choose her career. It's been chosen for her. Willow & Oz finally meet! Albeit briefly, but how cute are they? And then there's Kendra. Now isn't her appearance interesting? Though having watched the whole season in just a few days, I really thought she'd been around longer than she had. 10. What's My Line Part 2: Worms! Icky, icky worms. Ugh. But oh the passion! In the creepy basement. The tension between Xander & Cordy finally cracks and smoochies ensue. Angel without a shirt, worth the price of admission. And then there's Jonathan, who we see briefly, for what, the 3rd time? so far in the series. His story is just beginning.... 11. Ted: With John Ritter as the man courting Buffy's mother. I've always liked John Ritter, and he does a wonderful job as a by-the-rules guy who does not like the rebellious Buffy one bit. And of course, he is not what he seems. Buffy doesn't like him either, and ends up killing him. 12. Bad Eggs: A school project gone terribly wrong. When the Scooby gang is given eggs to take home and cared for like babies, it turns out these eggs are not the everyday, garden variety that can be fried, scrambled or boiled. 13. Surprise: This is it, the episode where all that intense longing between Buffy & Angel is finally consummated in some hot, romantic lovin'. Have to figure those centuries of experience makes it good for Buffy, wouldn't you think? And Willow finds out about Cordy & Xander, which does not make her happy. Lots of smoochies going on in this episode. 14. Innocence: Turns out Buffy's & Angel's special night was not without consequences. Turns out when Angel experience even a moment of true happiness, he loses his soul again. Turns out his happiness is his night with Buffy. This one is a tearjerker. 15. Phases: There's a werewolf in town and it turns out to be one of the Scoobys. Revelations all around with Larry the school bully making a startling confession. 16. Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered: Xander gets revenge on Cordy for breaking up with him on Valentine's Day, only it backfires when all the women in town fall for Xander. All but Cordy, that is. Buffy gets roses from her ex-honey.
17. Passion: Angel's obsession to drive Buffy mad doesn't end with her. He prefers to torment them all, and we see exactly how evil he's become, much to Giles' horror. Now Buffy has no reason not to kill him, no matter how cute he is. 18. Killed by Death: Buffy gets sick and ends up in the hospital, where she's at Death's door, who turns out to be a visitor from her past. Xander feels protective of his friend, and his white knight routine bothers Cordy. This is what I think of as a "filler" episode. Not really all that interesting but manages to drive the story a bit forward. 19. I Only Have Eyes For You: I loved this episode. A murder-suicide of star-crossed lovers from 1955 is reenacted in present-day Sunnydale over and over because the killer wants forgiveness but never manages to achieve it before people die. It culminates in a touching scene with Buffy and Angel when the spirits of the lovers inhabit their bodies, which later freaks Angel out. 20. Go Fish: The swimming team is all the rage in this episode where it turns out steroids aren't the only suspicious thing going on. There's also a side story where a member of the swimming team used to many privileges, thinks Buffy is up for grabs. And look, a very young yet still very cute Wentworth Miller From "Prison Break" is a swimmer. 21. Becoming, Part 1: We see a lot of Angel's history, how and when he was changed, as well as the gypsy curse that gave him back his soul. We also see Buffy when she first gets the call as Slayer, and Angel seeing her for the first time, and how that moment changed his life. 22. Becoming, Part 2: Buffy shows up at the library only to have the police show up as she's standing over a dead body. Giles has been kidnapped by Angel, and Willow is in a coma. Xander is broken up about seeing his best friend so helpless. And Spike reaches full power and hottie potential becomes evident. The infamous sword fight between Buffy & Angel. Much tears. There is much sadness by the end of this season... **** A lot of good stuff this season. Hard to believe so much happened, and how it went down, but I have to say I applaud those difficult choices. Joss Whedon didn't shy away from those "don't go there" moments. Watching it in succession like this is really intense, but that's actually a good thing. Makes it much more effective, I think. So I might take a little break before moving on to season 3. Then again, maybe not. What do you remember most about season 2? Labels: BtVS, Sarah Michelle Gellar

Book alert: Ice by Linda Howard 11/09
’Tis the season for mistletoe and holly, Santa . . . and suspense. And the gift that keeps on giving is Ice: premier thriller author Linda Howard’s breathless tale of a man, a woman, and a battle for survival against an unforgiving winter–and an unrelenting killer. Oh what fun it is to read.
Gabriel McQueen has only just arrived home on holiday leave from the service when his county-sheriff father sends him back out again with new marching orders. A brewing ice storm, and a distant neighbor who’s fallen out of contact, have the local lawman concerned. So he enlists Gabriel to make the long haul to the middle of nowhere, and make sure Lolly Helton is safe and sound. It’s a trip the younger McQueen would rather not make given the bitter winter weather–and the icy conditions that have always existed between him and Lolly.
But there’s no talking back when your dad is the town’s top cop. And there’s no turning back when night falls just as Gabriel arrives–and discovers that the weather outside isn’t the only thing that’s frightful. Spotting strangers in Lolly’s home–one of them packing a weapon–is all it takes to kick Gabriel into combat mode. And his stealth training is all he needs to extract Lolly from the house without alerting her captors. But when the escape is discovered, the heat–and the hunt–are on. And the winter woods are nowhere to be once the ice storm touches down, dropping trees, blocking roads, and trapping the fleeing pair in the freezing dark.
I don't know about you, but this reminds me a little bit of my very first Linda, a short story called "White Out", a grand story with one very hawt, "let's share our body heat" scene. So looking forward to it. Who would you like to be stranded by a snowstorm with? Labels: Linda Howard

Spotlight: D - Sylvia Day
I've been a fan of Sylvia Day since I read the Brava anthology, "Bad Boys Ahoy!", where you should not judge a book by its cover, because the cartoonish images don't give a clue about the wonderfully passionate stories to be found inside. She's written many stories, historicals, contemporaries, paranormals, and I find I like the historicals the best. "Passion For Him" so far is my favorite. Now however, I think Sylvia has really found her niche with her S.J. Day books. "Eve of Darkness", "Eve of Destruction" and "Eve of Chaos" are the stories, and hopefully not the only ones. I'm really loving the character of Eve, who doesn't come out of the box as the perfectly, well-adjusted heroine, but has some issues coming to terms with her destiny. But then she has 2 sexy guys interested in her, so life's not all bad. It's good stuff. I've met Sylvia a few times, and I always act like such a dork in front of her. Yet she's always so gracious and has even done an interview for me, which just proves what a class act she is LOL. And I'm amazed at the amount of writing and promotion she does. She is unstoppable. Smart, disciplined, and incredibly talented. She also has a 3rd pen name for another series as Livia Dare. With all the websites, blogs, twittering, FB & MySpace, where does she find the time? So today is all about Sylvia/S.J. Day. Enjoy. Have you read anything by Sylvia or S.J.?

Monday, July 20, 2009:
The other day, I was watching season 1 of "Gilmore Girls", and it was the episode where Dean tells Rory he loves her for the first time, and she totally freezes up on him. Because she didn't know how to react and didn't say the words back to him, it essentially lead to their breakup. Rory doesn't tell her mother why they broke up, only that they did. Somewhere along the lines Rory and Lorelai have a conversation about being able to say "I love you" to someone because of how she grew up, and Lorelai didn't want to raise a daughter who couldn't say the words to someone. I found that particularly interesting. See, I'm a more reserved person, and I don't find it easy to say, but when I do say it, I want to mean it. Oh yeah, sometimes there's those instances when someone does you a huge favor, and I'll say "Oh my God I love you" as a way of expressing my gratitude. But when it comes to those people who are really important - friends, family, significant others - I want to be able to say it, especially because I truly mean it. And it's hard for me, and I'll admit, that kinda bothers me. I have a friend who always tells people she loves them. I wish I could be like that. But at the same time, I don't want to say it just to say it either. I guess the same rule would also apply to the words "I hate you", which I've said numerous times in jest(?) when I'm uber jealous *g* But really, these 3 words are also very powerful, and very hurtful, and probably should never be said. Funnily enough, I find them rather easy to say. Huh. And I know I've said them and probably even meant them at the time. (Though rarely shown, I do have quite the nasty temper and don't hold back when in one of my rages. But that's a story for another time LOL). How about you, do you have a hard time saying "I love you"? What other words/phrases shouldn't be said unless you really mean them?

Harry, Nora and the lure of a sweet category

Like many Americans, and okay, millions of people around the world, I do have a bit of a thing for those Harry Potter movies. So far I've only read the first book, so I feel a little bit out of the loop. I've now gone to see HP6 twice, and understand it a little bit better, yet it's still prompted me to start the series, so that's what I'm doing. I haven't gotten very far, but it has me reminiscing about the flying car. Oh those were the days. This movie is pretty good, though sadness does ensue. For those of you who've either seen the movie or read the books, you know why. I think I was more sad the 2nd time around than the first. A pretty good installment, I must say. And I do think I want a vanishing cabinet. I was kinda hoping to see a few previews of Harry, Ron and Hermione as kids, just to see how much they've changed, but maybe that'll happen in the last movie? Being the romance reader that I am, I wantd more Ron and Hermione, though in this last movie, I wanted to smack both of them. Hermione pining for Ron? I think it should be the other way around. And Ron as clueless as you can get? I'm really hoping for a grand gesture in the last movie(s), but please don't tell me. I'm going to agonize over the books now. Kati had talked about this book awhile ago, and my copy literally fell off the shelf one day so I figured the forces were telling me I should do a re-read, and so I did. The Dream trilogy is my favorite of hers, and this is my absolute installment in the series. Kate is so stubbornly independent and proud, yet also caring and tender-hearted. I loved that she was matched with a man who wasn't intimidated by her abrasiveness, and found her incredibly attractive. In fact he even notes how he's never been so attracted to a woman's brain before, and I thought that was one of the sexiest things I've personally never had a man say to me *g* I love this category. Okay I'll admit that it's not particularly sharp and snappy, and the dialogue is a little too PG for my tastes, but I have always found it rather endearing. Abby and Nick are good friends, in fact after Abby's parents died when she was 18, leaving her with a younger sister to raise, Nick stepped in and gave Abby a job and a shoulder to lean on. This developed into a strong friendship over the years. Now Abby is dealing with a teenaged sister who feels that Abby is smothering her, and Abby struggles with letting go. Nick sympathizes with both, knowing the reason behind Abby's fear, but also understanding that Sarah needs a chance to spread her wings and experience all the things a 16-year-old girl should get to experience. While Abby deals with her rebellious sister, her and Nick grow closer, until it soon becomes apparent that they are falling in love. Only Abby won't admit it, and she instead pushes Nick away. Now Nick has to convince the woman he loves that he's not going anywhere, and it's worth taking a chance on love. Sigh. Very sweet. Now on to more Harry Potter, BtVS, and S.J. Day..... T.V. rewind: BtVS: season 1
Recently my decision to watch all 7 seasons of "Gilmore Girls" has reminded me of another show lasting 7 seasons that I absolutely adored: BtVS. Now I didn't love every episode, but the majority of them I did, and I prefer the television series to the movie. Having just watched all 12 episodes of season 1 (see listing below), I totally forgot many great moments from the series, and how much I liked the catchy lingo of the time (series starts in modern day time, which back then was1997), and the music. I have the soundtrack somewhere, which I'd still listen to today. And it's funny seeing the clunky computers and rare cellphones used back 12 years ago compared to the slick technology we're surrounded with today. I also noticed a few mistakes while re-watching, some episodes I haven't seen in years. The biggest one that comes to mind is in one episode we see Buffy is born in 1980,which would make her 16, going on 17, whereas in "Nightmares", we see 1981. Not a big deal, and I guess any show has to iron out the kinks to stay true to the mythology. I loved Giles completely appalled look when he believes Buffy has joined a cult, a.k.a. cheerleading squad. Priceless. I love Buffy's clothes, and wish I could kick ass like that. And to get a honey of a hottie like Angel. Here's a quick trip down memory lane.... 1. Welcome To The Hellmouth: where we first meet Buffy, and when she meets the rest of the gang. 2. The Harvest: pretty much a continuation of episode 1, imho. 3. Witch: the first ever Buffy episode I watched, which inevitably lead to my obsession 4. The Teacher's Pet: rather a creepy episode. Not a fan of bugs. 5. Never Kill a Boy On The First Date: Buffy's crushing on a brooding loner of a hottie who later becomes infatuated with her "adventurous" social life 6. The Pack: Zander's kinda sexy here when he's taken over by animal instincts, and recognizes Buffy as a suitable mate. Leads to much embarrassment later. Fun times. 7. Angel: come on, 'nuff said. Though the yummy David Boreanaz is really young-looking here, he's definitely got all that mysterious, sexy appeal going on, and we learn his deal. And their first kiss. Sigh... 8. I Robot...You, Jane: I truly don't remember ever seeing this one, and that's okay, cuz there's not a lot of memorable going on here. 9. The Puppet Show: Creepy, not a favorite. Just not a fan of the ventriloquist's dummy. 10. Nightmares: I liked this one a lot because we see a lot of what everyone is afraid of, deep down. 11. Out of Mind, Out of Sight: I remember this one as being one that really stuck with me, because it epitomizes a lot of those feelings of alienation you have in high school. And we see Clea Duvall here, who went on to appear in "Carnivale" and "Heroes". Still like this one a lot. 12. Prophecy Girl: The episode where Buffy dies. The first time. Good times. And I really loved Buffy's dress *g* Now on to season 2, where lots more memorable stuff happens. I gotta tell ya, I'm having a blast re-living the show. Any favorite memories of yours from Season 1? Eve of Darkness by S.J. Day (2009) - mini review
Cursed by God, hunted by demons, desired by Cain and Abel... All in a day's work. For Evangeline Hollis, a long-ago fling with a bad boy from the wrong side of the tracks just became a disaster of biblical proportions. One night with a leather-clad man of mystery has led to a divine punishment: the Mark of Cain. Thrust into a world where sinners are drafted to kill demons, Eve knows her learning curve must be short. A longtime agnostic, she begrudgingly maneuvers through a celestial bureaucracy where she is a valuable but ill-treated pawn. She's also become the latest point of contention in the oldest case of sibling rivalry in history... But she'll worry about all that later. Right now she's more concerned with learning to kill while staying alive. And saving the soul she'd never quite believed she had. What can I say about this book that hasn't been said more eloquently by better people, other than I've been a long-time fan of Sylvia Day, and I'm even more impressed with the new S.J. Day series. Probably not a lot, but I still want to make my $0.02 known. When we first meet Eve, she is in the middle of some rather intense on-the-job training, and she's having a little trouble adjusting to her new lifestyle as a Mark. Two very significant events in Eve's life lead her to be where she is today, and they involve those feuding brothers of the Bible: Cain and Abel. Agnostic by nature, Eve can no longer go through life blissfully ignorant of the very threatening presence of demons, or deny the fact that now she is supposed to be on the side of the good guys, headed up by The Big Guy. Yep, you guessed it. God. You know, most times when I read a book, I'm in it mainly for the hero. I'm not ashamed to admit that. And here we have two delectable leading men who both desire Eve. Right now I've tentatively selected which camp I'm in, but from the brief glimpses I've read about Book #2, I might be defecting to the other side, though I kinda hope not. But I'll worry about that later. However as I was saying, normally I'm all hero, all the way, but this time, I am digging the heroine. It's not the first time in recent memory I've been such a fan of the leading lady, but in this series, I'll get to see her for at least another 2 books, and I want to be sure to like her. So far I do. Very much. Eve is rather well-adjusted and likable, and very, very human. She comes into her gifts rather late in life, and most unwillingly. Yet after some griping about the circumstances, Eve gets down to the business of dealing with things. She's not fearless nor particularly adept, but she's good with facing the dangers and obstacles she needs to face in order to survive. She has the normal issues with her family that many people do, but she loves them, and she also has a strong affection for her elderly neighbor Mrs. Basso. She had a career she loved and worked hard at, yet all that changes when she is Marked. Now she has to rearrange her priorities. Instead of being mad at Alec and Reed, the two men she shared two separate, torrid encounters with that lead to her being Marked, she sticks with them so they can both show her the ropes and hopefully prevent her from being killed. Eve is just starting up her training and has A LOT to learn. I can't wait to watch her trying to master her various new responsibilities and figure out her new abilities. And if she gets to spend some time in bed with either Alec or Reed, well, all the better ;) Speaking of the hotties, Cain and Abel are based on the very brothers in the Bible with the same names, and the rivalry continues now in modern times. Both are very sexy, intriguing men in their own way, and each is strongly attracted to Eve, and she is equally drawn to each of the brothers. Cain is a loner, more rough around the edges, yet he cares very deeply for Eve. Abel, curious about the woman who has won his brother's affections, is more polished, and definitely one to do things by the book, yet that doesn't make him any less of a bad boy. It will be interesting to see how each of these compelling men deal with their feelings for Eve, and just how far each will go to claim her for his own. I'm very much looking forward to finding out... Rating: ****1/2 out of *****

Spotlight: C - Anna Campbell
I'm on vacation this week and up much later than usual, but I didn't forget about my weekly spotlight. Today is all about Anna Campbell.
I remember first hearing about Anna when her book "Claiming the Courtesan" came out. It generated a lot of buzz, some of it controversial, not all of it kind and favorable. I admit reading about it made me very curious about the book, so I eventually picked up a copy and got lost in the story. As someone who's read adult romance since the early 80's, and definitely got a fine education on old school romances, this one did not bother me as much as it bothered many other readers. I liked it very much. And when her next book came out, "Untouched", I couldn't wait to get my hands on it. A fan was born.
I was fortunate enough to meet Anna at RWA last year, and she was such a funny, light-hearted person, with a heavy dose of the devil in her, that I couldn't help but like her immediately. And she is very appreciative of her fans. I am one of those people that is easily forgettable (sad but true LOL), yet she remembered me! What a thrill. And I'm so looking forward to her 4th book, which will be out in November, which is not soon enough for me.
Have you read Anna Campbells' books?
Is there a favorite?

Johnny Depp, Gilmore Girls and Blue Diablo
So yes I did go see " Public Enemies" Friday night and liked it quite a bit. Totally went in with low expectations because the preview made me yawn, but it was interesting. Afterwards, knowing a lot of things went down in Chicago, including Dillinger's death, I had to Google it and find out more, and wasn't surprised to see that a lot of the movie was embellished in some fashion or another, but the core story was the same. I was disappointed we didn't see more of Chicago, but since that was, what, 75 years ago, I'm sure too much has changed to really depict what the city looked like back then. Dillinger was 31 years old when he died, but living a life of crime definitely aged him. Johnny Depp is much prettier to look at, and definitely very charismatic. (Next to him in this picture is Marion Cotillard, who played Dillinger's girlfriend Billie). Cute show! Okay it's a little hyper and caffeine-induced, but overall it's got a charming appeal. Both mom and daughter are very pretty and likable, and their house looks cozy and inviting. The townspeople are a little quirky but not in a "Northern Exposure" kind of a way. I always knew I liked Luke - he's so cranky and scruffy and serious, you just want to ruffle his feathers. I know more happens with him and Lorelai later in the series, but I'm pleading ignorant for right now. So far I've only seen 4 episodes out of....150+? I'm totally guessing here, knowing I have 42 DVDs to watch, and there's 7 seasons. And so far I'm really looking forward to each one.
This one took me a long time to read because I just didn't have a lot of leisure time to sit down and enjoy it, and the minute I sat down to read a few pages, my eyes would droop before I opened the book and I wouldn't last too long. But I finished it over the weekend and now, I want MORE! Corrine is a great heroine, built with a combination of strength, loss, courage, honor, and a heart with a strong capacity for love, mixed in with some quirks and flaws that make her a very real person. I truly liked that about her. As for which team I choose, I am now firmly in the Chance camp, though I bet Jesse could give him a good run for his money. It took me awhile to warm up to Chance, but what I discovered is that he is a complex, multilayered hero who isn't easy to read at first, or second, or even the tenth glance. He's not upfront about his feelings, and often acts in direct opposition to what he really wants to do. But when he finally shows little pieces of himself, I knew I had to re-evaluate my original opinion. Chance definitely has potential, and I can't wait to watch him reach it ;) How about you? Friday, July 10, 2009:
Seems like life has just been a little more stressful than usual, yet at the same time, I can't find anything to hold my interest for those moments of downtime. I'm so glad I'm going on vacation next week. Originally I had planned to go to RWA, but decided against it. The main reason being my RWA roomie isn't going this year, so I didn't want to go through the trouble of finding another roommate, and I've been to D.C. several times in the last year, and though it's a wonderful city, I just needed a break. I will miss not being there this year, and seeing all the lovelies I know in blogland who will be attending. I was hoping to finally meet KristieJ , along with several others. Instead I will be catching up on reading, which is definitely a good thing :)
If all goes well, I'll get out of the office 2 hours early today (woo hoo!) and I plan to meet up with a friend and go see "Public Enemies". To be honest, the trailer didn't appeal to me, as much as I adore looking @ Johnny Depp, but she doesn't want to see "Star Trek", so this was the next best option. I do want to see "Sister's Keeper", but it looks sad, and I don't want sad today.
Still reading "Blue Diablo". Just haven't found a lot of time to just relax and read. It's good, and the more I read, the more I like, though I will admit I'm not loving Chance as much as I'd hoped to. But he still has time to win me over.
I think I'm just reeeeally tired. And hungry. That makes me cranky and hard to please. But next week will be laden with naps and lots of eating when I'm not reading, so there is that to look forward to.
Any exciting plans for your weekend?

Thursday, July 09, 2009:
Having known myself for many years now, I've come to the conclusion that I have a mild case of OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder for those who absolutely have to have it spelled out for you). It can be rather random and attack at anytime, and there's not often a rhyme or reason for it. Part of it could be boredom, or another, darker, element could be that my inner voice instead of my common sense is controlling me. The devil is winning.
For some people, you might have to count steps as you walk up and down them everyday. Others, it might be you have to put your left sock on before your right sock. Mine is a bit more random than that. For example, somehow I got it in my head, that I just have to watch all 7 seasons of "Gilmore Girls" in a row. Now I've seen parts of the show from time to time, but I don't think I ever sat down and watched a complete episode from start to finish. And just where did I get this idea? From watching an episode of "Supernatural" where Sam and Dean are touring a movie studio and they pass by the set of "Gilmore Girls" (Sam was a character on GG). So all of a sudden I got that strange thought that whispered "you should watch this". No, I said to myself. Really, no. "Watch this". Uh uh. You can't make me. "Just Netflix it. So easy". So dammit, I did. All 42 DVDs. I should get the first one today.

Another one of my things is a food or beverage I can't get enough of until, well, I get totally sick of it from overindulgence. Right now, being summer and all, I'm on my McD's vanilla iced coffee kick. Love 'em. I've had as many as 3 in one day, and if I'm really feeling desperate, I'll buy 2 at once and put one in the fridge. Pathetic, really. I don't even try fighting it anymore. And it doesn't help that there are 3 McD's within about a 3-mile radius of me. If one ran out of the mix (which happened to me on Friday night), then another will inevitably have it. I'm completely doomed.
Do you have any compulsions?
Any hope for a cure? Labels: me

"Instant Gratification" by Jill Shalvis (2009) - review
THE DOCTOR IS IN DEEP Wishful, California, is 3000 miles from Dr. Emma Sinclair’s last job in a New York City ER. It may as well be another galaxy. Here, running her father’s clinic for a summer, Emma treats bee stings, stomach flu, and the occasional pet cat. Plus, she has to contend with patients like Stone Wilder: gorgeous, laid-back, and irritating beyond belief. The man laughs at her. A lot. And Emma loathes him. All except that tiny part of her that wants to throw him on her examining table and break every doctor-patient rule in the book…
When Stone tries to help Emma learn to loosen up a bit, he pictures white-water rafting or scenic mountain hikes. Not a mind-blowing affair that shakes them both to the core. Emma’s sure she has no place in a town like Wishful, but Stone knows different. Emma belongs here—in this town, in his life. And convincing this strong-minded, stubborn, sexy woman of that fact will be a challenge no Wilder man could resist…
This is the second book in Jill Shalvis' "Instant" series, and I thoroughly enjoyed re-visiting Wishful and those crazy Wilder brothers again, though Cam (from "Instant Attraction")wasn't around as much as I would have liked. Dr. Emma Sinclair is in Wishful filling in for her dad after his heart attack, and she cannot wait to get back to New York, where she's comfortable with bad attitudes, taxicabs, and caffeine IV's. You just can't find a decent Thai restaurant anywhere in Wishful, and Emma's jonesing big-time for city life. It's already been 2 months and she's climbing the walls. Patients are few are far between, and the ones who do come to the Urgent Care center are dubious about her credentials. Besides that, they pay in food currency versus cold, hard cash, and Emma cannot imagine how her father has survived her all these years living like this. There's nothing to look forward to...well nothing except a big, sexy mountain bum who gets under her skin and knows how to fill out a tight pair of jeans.... Stone Wilder may seem like your common, everyday slacker, but beneath the laid-back attitude is the heart of a working man. Injured while on a brief expedition, Stone insists he doesn't need medical care, at least not the kind that can be treated with a needle. But if that uptight yet beautiful doctor wants to lay her hands on him in another capacity, he's more than willing to take his medicine. Stymied by his attraction to such a buttoned-up spoilsport, Stone nevertheless cannot stop thinking about Dr. Emma Sinclair, or dreaming about her, or wanting her. It's just too bad she's got a stick up her ass the size of a fencepost. Maybe if she learned to relax and not take everything so seriously from time to time, she might have a little fun, and actually see all of what Wishful has to offer. And even better, she might take him up on his offer to get nekkid... Then Emma learns her father's hiatus might not be so temporary, and Stone is not the guy she thought he was, and her life is turned upside down. Fighting her growing attraction for a blue-collar guy and trying not to let the people of Wishful sneak under her defenses and work their small-town charm on her, Emma remains determined to return back to New York, even if she discovers her heart might not be in it. In fact, her heart is very much stuck in Wishful.... My thoughts:
Though this one didn't grab my heart quite as much as "Instant Attraction" did, it was still a great story, made even moreso by the appealing and surprisingly wonderful Stone Wilder. Here was the kind of hero where I thought I knew what to expect, and he turns out to be more amazing that I would have thought. He's a bit arrogant, a lot stubborn, and a whole heap of sexy. But what really makes him so incredible are all those hidden layers. Stone's not your typical slacker, no matter that he makes it look like he's only out having fun. Underneath it all, he's a dedicated employee of Wilder Adventures, and the most important thing in his world is his family. Even they acknowledge that he is the glue that holds them all together. And he seems to do so effortlessly, out of love. I have to admit, I fell hard for Stone. Emma on the other hand is harder to read. She has a lot of likable qualities, yet at the same time she's just a shade too stubborn for me to warm up to her completely. I did like that as she learned more about her father and the circumstances surrounding him and her mother, who recently passed away, she began to realize that maybe her father wasn't the apathetic person she thought he was, and that he truly didn't abandon her all those years ago. That belief really did a number on her, and it shows in the way she tries to push people away instead of letting them in. But Stone wasn't having it. When she pushed him, he'd push back. He wanted to be a part of her life, even knowing she was going to leave someday soon, and he was willing to put his heart on the line and be with her for as long as she was in town. He definitely confounded Emma, which was rather sweet. Here was an independent woman who had her set boundaries that no one dared break through until Stone came along, and she didn't know what was what. By this time, the townspeople began to work their way into her heart, so this made Emma a big, ole emotional mess. Nothing was like it used to be, and she was having a hard time coming to terms with that. Then they both did the crazy thing and fell in love. Stone was much more accepting of his fate while Emma pretty much fought it every step of the way. But based on the way she lived her life, she really didn't know any better. I liked how once she listened to Stone's words about her lack of people skills, she really took a step back and saw what others did. She was a good doctor, a very competent one, but she didn't have a way with people like her best friend, Dr. Spencer, did. She forgot the human element, and realized how that carried over into her personal life. Once she figured it out, she knew things were never going to be the same. If there was one person I wished I could have smacked upside the head, it was Emma's mother. Not to speak ill of the dead, but that woman did her own job on her daughter, and I really hate stuff like that. I was even more frustrated that she was no longer living because she deserved a good talking to. I know, I know, life doesn't work that way, and she did love her daughter, blah, blah, blah. It still aggravated the heck out of me that things could have been a whole lot different if mommy dearest hadn't been quite so manipulative. I'm just glad Emma finally saw the big picture and was able to resolve some issues that were a result of her mother's machinations. And let herself love and be loved. So yeah, another satisfying read from one of my favorite contemporary authors. I wish Jill could conjure me up my own Stone. And after seeing bits and pieces of TJ and Harley and the obvious past they share, I just know they are going to have quite the story of their own. Can't wait :) Rating: **** out of ***** Labels: Jill Shalvis
