Iron Man 2 (2010)
From Yahoo.com:

The world is aware that billionaire inventor Tony Stark is the armored Super Hero Iron Man. Under pressure from the government, the press and the public to share his technology with the military, Tony is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands. With Pepper Potts, and James "Rhodey" Rhodes at his side, Tony forges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces.

This was one of my most anticipated movies of 2010, especially since I'm such a HUGE fan of Robert Downey Jr., and the first movie was pretty spectacular, again mostly because of him. I'm not a big fan of some of the super hero movies out there - they tend to be weak on plot and relationship-building - but RDJ has a charisma that really breathed new life into the character of of Tony Stark and Iron Man. I also really liked his relationship with his right-hand woman, Pepper Potts. She was poised, unflappable, super intelligent, and not fooled by his charm, though it was evident she was rather in love with the player anyway.

This time around, Tony Stark believes he has he world by the balls, and he's not about to give that power up and share his secrets with the government. According to Tony, HE is the protector of the world, and responsible for world peace, and the government can go screw itself. Yeah, he's got a bit of an ego problem. But while to the world he presents a face of confidence and arrogance, what he's hiding is that the implant he has is killing him. He's tried everything, but he just cannot find a cure, and time is running out.

Meanwhile it's revealed that the current technology Stark Industries uses may not have been solely created by his father, Howard Stark. There's a Russian man who worked with the company decades ago who may have been responsible for many of these discoveries, and now his son wants revenge....

My thoughts:

Robert Downy is once again his unforgettable self in this movie, and worth the price of admission alone. I can't help it, I have a weakness for the man. Even when he's being a jerk, I still love him. And yeah, especially in the beginning of the movie, and in a few parts throughout, he's not at his best. Of course dying can bring out the worst in a person, but what makes it worse is that he takes it out on the people that care about him, most notably Pepper Potts. Yes, because it's obvious he has feelings for her, but it still wasn't his smoothest move.

It's funny how the second Scarlett Jo appears onscreen that I cringed. There's something just so skanky about her. I know the guys in the theatre were probably all drooling and having dirty thoughts, but in my mind she's one step up from Megan Fox, only I have to admit that she can act better, and I gotta give her credit, she was pretty good in this movie. She makes a fabulous kickass chick. But I just don't like her. Give me Angelina, give me Jessica Biel, hell, give me Tina Fey, just don't give us Skanky ScarJo.

I like Don Cheadle a lot, but they could have given him more a sense of humor here. Still trying to wrap my head around him replacing Terrence Howard, and DC coulda pulled it off if he hadn't been quite so serious in the role of Rhodey. But I think he makes a good foil for RDJ, and stands up to him quite well. He's smaller in stature than Terrence, but he doesn't let that stop him. I just kept imagining his character from the Ocean movies, with that British accent. Now that would have been fun *g*

Mickey Rourke, and what has plastic surgery done to you? I cringed when he came onscreen too. I remember a steamy movie he was in years ago (no, not 9 1/2 weeks, though I did see part of that movie too) called Wild Orchid, and I thought he was kinda hot, if a bit deranged, back then. Now, ick. But he was convincing as a Russian bad guy, and he does have a flamboyant sense of parody that worked well for the character.

Sam Rockwell also has a way about him that is highly entertaining. But I just wasn't convinced that he was quite the adversary against Tony Stark much less Iron Man. He had a horrible spray-on tan and tacky jewelry and a boatload of money, but he had no balls until he partnered up with Mickey Rourke's character. Still, he's fun to watch.

Biggest disappointment: what they did to Pepper Potts! She was such a wonderful character in the first movie - intelligent, poised, efficient - but here they make her the cliche'. She's shrill, emotional, whiny, and unsure of herself. I hated what they did to her character. Plus, with everything else going on in the movie, she's not really around a lot, so we have to fall back on the fact that she's been with Tony for a long time, and that they have a long history, but we don't see much of it. I thought their whole storyline was weak and dissatisfying. Totally typical of most superhero relationships. At least they didn't have her walking around in skimpy, suggestive outfits. The heels were bad enough.

However as disappointing as all that was, I still got my RDJ fix, and that alone was worth it. If only we could have seen more of him without a shirt. I'm seeing that they will make a 3rd Iron Man movie scheduled for release in 2012. If they do, I hope to God they do a better job of it this time around.

Bad Boy crush: Robert Downey Jr.
Photobucket

Okay, I'll admit it. I've had a bit of a crush on Robert Downey Jr. ever since I saw him in "The Pick-Up Artist" alongside Molly Ringwald back in 1987. Robert portrayed Jack Jericho, a teacher and rather adorable womanizer who ends up meeting his match and for the first time ever, falls in love. As Jack, RDJ was funny and persistent and charming, but back then he had this space between his teeth that was rather distracting, so I wasn't completely enamored with his looks. I am so superficial that way. But he did catch my eye, even then.

It was actually when I saw him in "Less Than Zero" that I had that "wow" moment. In the movie, he was Julian...something or another, a wealthy drug addict who has such a serious habit that he owes his dealer a lot of money, and said dealer forces Julian to become a prostitute to pay for his habit. You got it. True hero material. But it cemented my thing for him, as totally inappropriate and unexplainable as it was. There was just some dangerous, heartbreaking quality that I was all melty for, maybe it was that sense that he was going along full speed ahead, about ready to crash and burn into a very hard and unforgiving brick wall, yet he was having the most incredible time while at it. RDJ loved the drugs. He was in a long-term relationship with Sarah Jessica Parker back then, but even that wasn't enough to get him to stop using. It took almost 2 decades.

RDJ has an incredible and various of projects, most of which I haven't seen, if you can believe it. However there are some I did actually watch. There's "Johnny Be Good", and "Air America" with Mel Gibson. "Chances Are" with Cybil Shepherd. "Soap Dish" with a bunch of people. And of course "Chaplin". I watched "Wonder Boys" and he was probably the best reason to see it, imho. And a lot of movies I never saw...until "Iron Man". Oh and there was the Elton John video, and his appearance on "Ally McBeal", a show I didn't care much for but usually would watch when he was on. He definitely has that ability to draw me in.

RDJ has come a loooong from those days of drug abuse and dating Sarah Jessica Parker. Now he's in a new movie, "Sherlock Holmes", set for release Christmas Day. He plays the main character in a movie I don't know if I want to see other than the fact he's in it. Because regardless of what he's done in his personal life, I think he's an amazing actor. Perhaps based on the decadent nature of the film, you can tell RDJ's hard-living ways have caught up with him, see it in the baggy eyes, the lines on his face, that smoker's voice, and I still get the vague impression that he's one step away from picking up a crack pipe. He's just got that edge to him, and I remember reading articles where he talked about how much he loved doing drugs. As he told a judge back in 1999, "It's like I have a loaded gun in my mouth and my finger's on the trigger, and I like the taste of the gunmetal."

However I have always loved Robert Downey Jr., and I was so thrilled by his role in "Iron Man" last year. He was just amazing as Tony Stark, the incredibly sexy gazillionaire turned super hero, and I can't wait to see "Iron Man 2". I'm hoping things turn out just as well for him in real life. Here's to happy endings.

Here's to Robert Downey Jr, one of my all-time favorite bad boys.

"Iron Man" (2008) - movie review
Photobucket

Tony Stark is a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man.
I've always loved Robert Downey Jr. Even in the midst of his drug problems, I still liked him, and felt a twinge of sympathy for him, and prayed he would find his way from the dark side. From the first time I saw him, I believe it was in "The Pick-Up Artist" with Molly Ringwald, when he had a space between his teeth, I've found myself drawn to his personality. He always seemed a little off-the-wall, too reckless, yet he wore his heart on his sleeve and you just felt he gave everything he had to give. He was the damaged bad boy, the kind that's a little too hard to resist. At least it was for me. I've just always been a fan of his.
So of course when I heard about this movie I had wanted to see it, and even moreso when I heard many people say how much they enjoyed it. Even some of my more picky friends gave it rave reviews. Sounded like a no-brainer to me. I was so glad it was still in theatres.
My thoughts:
The first scene scared me a little because it was remniscent of "Indiana Jones 4" (which if you've read this blog, you know I absolutely hated), but once RDJr showed up as Tony Starke, all was right with the movie. He was his sarcastic, charming self, arrogant and a bit of a meglomaniac, and I loved it. What fun to play a billionaire with the world falling at your feet! But then he's kidnapped by enemy forces who want him to build them a weapon, and suddenly Tony sees exactly what his legacy is, and how he wants to change it.
Building the prototype for his future "Iron Man" suit, Tony escapes and is finally rescued by U.S. Military, much to the relief of his friends and personal assistant Pepper Potts (played by Gwynth Paltrow). But not everyone is happy with his return, and certainly not with his new outlook on life. It's up to Tony to save himself and his company without being killed in the process, and so he creates an even stronger, more efficient Iron Man to help save the world.
What a fun movie! RDJr is perfect in the role as a dissipated billionaire with unlimited access to beautiful women, good alcohol, fast cars and the unrelenting attention of the media. While he believes he uses his powers and intelligence for good, it becomes immediately apparent to him how naive and blind he's been for so long, and he's determined to change all that. He's gutsy, kinda crazy, completely self-absorbed, yet still very likeable. I found myself hoping that a sequel is now in the works.
