BLOG ALERT: author fan letter blog tour: coming to a blog near you

Kassa from Kassa-RVWS came up with a cool idea for a blog crawl - to write a fan letter to a favorite author about one of their books or perhaps their work in general. A bunch of us loved the idea and decided to participate. As you can see, it's already underway, but feel free to stop by previous posts and show some author love.

On my mind....
Photobucket

Well, I think I'm finally over this weird funk that's been affecting me the past several days. Wow, I'm not one to be depressed or mopey, so this bizarre mood I've been in totally threw me for a loop. The thing is, I can't figure out what was the cause of it. Though I will say it gave me a whole new appreciation for people who battle depression on a regular basis. I cannot imagine what they must go through. It can definitely take you to some dark places, ones I've never been to before, which is pretty scary. However I'm past it now, so I'm not going to dwell on it. I'm just glad it's over. Thank you to everyone who offered their kind thoughts. They meant a lot. You guys are the best :)

Last night I met a friend for dinner at the Cheesecake Factory and then we went to see the Beyonce movie "Obsessed". I admit I wasn't expecting much but I really liked it. Ali Larter definitely has the handle on playing a pyscho bitch, and Beyonce easily managed to hold her own, despite my initial reservations about her. I'd not seen her acting before, so this was a surprising treat. And I loved that her character didn't just sit back and take it. Beyonce got mega applause from moviegoers, let me tell ya. And despite the lackluster reviews, I found this movie to be entertaining and wicked fun. Ali Larter is bad, bad, bad, though thank God not Fatal Attraction bad, and I bet she had fun playing this role.

And, I cannot neglect to mention Idris Elba. Wow. I don't recall seeing him before, though he's been in several movies (American Gangster, which I saw) and I guess he made an appearance on The Office, which I periodically watch. Anyway, I think he did an amazing job of portraying a successful business man who, though happily married with a son, isn't immune to the attractiveness of other women. At times his character pushed the limits, almost crossing a line, but always reeling himself in just in time. Good thing Beyonce's character was a strong woman, because he needed someone like that. Idris definitely has charisma, and I definitely think he's gorgeous, so I'll be looking for him in other movies. I might have to re-watch American Gangster to identify his character this time. Where the heck was I when he was onscene???

Another issue that I've been thinking a whole lot about this week concerns "nice vs. not nice" blogs. I've debated saying anything because I really have nothing to add to the topic, other than to just express my personal feelings on the whole matter. And also because I do happen to consider myself a friend of one of the bloggers in question. I guess I'm taking this opportunity to make myself feel better, and as a typical Libra (yeah I'm blaming my zodiac sign cuz that's such a mature thing to do), I hate taking sides. Then after much internal dialogue, I came to the conclusion that I don't need to take sides. This is not a war, or even a baseball game between the Cubs and the White Sox. (I don't have a favorite team here either). How silly of me to think otherwise.

Bottom line is, when it comes right down to it, you support your friends, even when they make partial or even complete asses of themselves. I can't say that I agree with everything that was said recently by one of the bloggers in question, because I definitely do not. In fact I was rather riled up by a portion of her speech, however that's another story not worth getting into, other than to say I am tired of this issue being dragged up yet again. Let it die in peace. And no, this is not a case of "can't we all just get along?" because I think that's a totally unrealistic expectation. I don't like everybody, so why should anyone else? I make no apologies for who/what I do like either. Which is why I don't believe I need to make a choice between visiting her blog or the blogs of other, so-called "not nice" administrators.

AND I completely subscribe to the opinion that if you are truly genuine, nice, intelligent, funny, cool, charming, or whatever, you don't have to tell people that you are. It shines through without having to announce it to the world. Just sayin'.

I do visit these so-called "not nice" blogs, not everyday, but frequently. I rarely post, though not because I'm afraid to comment, but more because most of them are a lot smarter and way more eloquent than I am, and have visitors that are just as smart, funny and perceptive as they are and tend to say it much better than I. Several of my RL blogger friends already know this about me. I'm not stupid, I'm just not very good at expressing myself.

So when I do visit these "not nice" blogs, I have varying opinions on the subject matter. Sometimes I don't agree, and other times I find the blog topics unnecessary or not to be my interest. Then there are even other times I'll read a really thought-provoking, relevant post that has me questioning my current opinions, or wanting to learn more about a topic they're discussing. In the interest of full disclosure and yes, fairness, I have to come clean and admit I've been critical of these blogs in the past, even more recently, and I haven't always liked the direction that some of the posts have gone, but when I really think about it, I recognize that some of these bloggers have put the romance community on the map, and shed a rather refreshing, fiesty, and yes, at times, a positive light on the readers and writers in this industry. Forging a path is not necessarily done with sweetness and light.

But I gotta say that the so-called "nice" blogs have their purpose as well. They can be fun, light-hearted, positive, embracing and close-knit. Most of the time you're not going to run across regular intellectual discussions about the state of the romance industry, but rather posts about celebrating the shiny, happy romance community. Or seeing us acting like naughty school girls when we discuss various sexual positions we've read about in our favorite books. Rather juvenile behavior, but so what? Nothing wrong with being silly. With the economy, swine flu, horrible conditions of the roads and all those potholes, fear of losing jobs and the sad state of school systems, you need to find somewhere to put aside all those day-to-day worries. It's not always serious and mature, but you know, not everyone feels comfortable discussing sex or love with their RL friends, especially if said friends don't read romance. We celebrate our sexuality and enjoy the freedom to talk about it with like-minded individuals. I admit I was a bit amused to read some comments at one of the nice blogs, saying how creepy our little group was. Yeah, we're complete freaks. And I am only speaking for myself here, but I don't take it too seriously. After all, blogging is only a small part of what I do during the day, and it's not even everyday. And I visit a variety of blogs - readers, writers, group, industry, etc. They all give me something of what I need, but not one of them gives me everything. It's why I blog-hop, which takes up maybe 15-20% of my day. Well, unless it's really slow at work.

So I am not choosing sides, and yeah I am selfish and I want it all. I'm not one of the popular kids and I never will be, but I do like to think I can mingle with both sides freely, and enjoy the benefits I get out of it. If anyone actually reads this, they will probably think I'm riding the fence, and that's fine. I am. I see no real purpose for me not to. I've never seen the world in black and white, but lots of gray, soft, muted, harsh, ugly. Some days I like the gentler tones, and others a stark, unforgiving one works best.

So in summary, I'm totally taking the easy way out here and not going on the attack. I don't feel compelled to draw out my poisonous sword for this particular battle. Now if you were to insult cover model Nathan Kamp, then I might have to get nasty *g*

***

And now I think I'm going to go watch the first season of Carnivale (another selection from my blogger recommendation list). Enjoy the rest of your weekend :)

What's on your mind?

Special guest: Ann Aguirre and "Blue Diablo"
Photobucket
*****************
I'd like to give a warm welcome to a very special guest - author Ann Aguirre - as she kicks off the April 7th release of her amazing new book, Blue Diablo. Here is just a short excerpt from her website, starring Corine Solomon:
Chance Met

Right now, I’m a redhead.

I’ve been blonde and brunette as the situation requires, though an unscheduled color change usually means I need to relocate in the middle of the night or face people burning crosses on my lawn. I’ve set a new record, going on eighteen months in the same city, no consequences, no demonstrations, and for the last year, I’ve been a respectable business owner to boot. Maybe I should knock wood.

So I do.

But right now, a redhead. I tell myself it goes with the blue eyes, even if my skin is a little too olive for the carpet to match the drapes. And sure, I get a few looks because it’s a true red, Garnier Nutrisse 64R to be exact, not the plum that most women here favor, but I may as well please myself because I will never, ever blend in entirely. The best I can do is to make sure nobody reckons me any crazier than anyone else.
*****************
Doesn't that make you curious for more?
Now here's Ann:

Cross-genre Fiction

These days, we enjoy a rich buffet of cross-genre delights. I’ve apparently done some innovating myself. Readers have called my Jax books “futuristic urban fantasy” because they don’t seem like your typical SF. I’ve very pleased with that, and I’m happy I can attract readers who don’t usually care for SF.

Now take my Corine books books, for instance. They’re a lovely amalgam of romance, and fantasy, lightly seasoned with mystery. How can I hope to bring so many disparate elements into one cohesive whole? What makes a captivating cross-genre book?

Well, first I need…

A plot.

This is more important than in a completely character-driven romance, where the relationship is the primary focus. But if the characters spend the whole book running around getting into random situations that exist solely as an excuse for your leads to spend time together, readers will notice. Story arc is crucial in cross-genre fiction.

Compelling characters

The cool thing about cross-genre is that I have a little more leeway than straight romance. I don’t necessarily have to wrap up the love story by the end of book one. That means I can draw out the sexual tension. I can even offer the heroine several male leads to choose from, and explore various options as I go. Sweet! I’m really looking forward to hearing what readers think of the Blue D men.

Moving on, I also need…

Consistent, detailed world-building

How does magic work in my world? Why? Are there supernatural creatures? (A resounding no.) Why or why not? How do various factions interact?

And maybe…

HEA

This one is a bit controversial, but I hope to draw romance readers. Since I’m writing outside the box, I don’t have to wrap up the romance subplot in one book. That’s good for me. I can also fiddle around with several sexy love interests before I commit. However, romance readers want to immerse themselves into a world where good eventually triumphs over evil. I’m not interested in writing anything else, either.

This is fantastic news for me because I have a whomping big case of genre ADD. If I had to commit and say, “Yes, I’ll never write anything but this, so long as I live, amen,” it would be a sad, sad day at Casa Aguirre.

How do you guys feel about cross-genre fiction?

The blogging blues...
I'm sure we all get them. I think you know what I'm talking about: the lack of inspiration, the feeling you've got nothing to say, the realization it's all been done before. You wonder if you're just talking to yourself, if it really makes a difference that you're blogging, and yet why should you even care? You wrack your brain for an interesting topic, something that appeals to you as much as the people you know visit your blog. You don't want to come across as boring, yet at the same time, it's your blog and you truly blog for yourself (at least you should).
Other thoughts cloud your mind. You've been doing it for awhile now and you're afraid that you're repeating yourself, that everyone's sick of your (Nathan Kamp) obsessions and wonder when you're going to get a life, or at least give away another book *g* You think you might need a break but you like blogging and aren't ready to go on hiatus quite yet.
Part of the blues is that I'm having "one of those days", you know, the kind where nothing goes right and you just want to crawl under the covers and not face the world for a little while. I hate these kinda days because I don't feel like doing anything except wallow in my self-pity until I'm over it. Thank God for silly friends who know how to snap me out of it, especially my friend L who's just plain crazy.

Photobucket
I came across this interesting article about the "blogging blues". Maybe in our quest to connect with others in the information age, we are burning ourselves out. I find myself spending so much time on the computer. I try and justify it since I don't watch much t.v., but I wonder what else I could be doing. Does anyone else feel like that, tied to your computer? And with iPhones, etc., we're even more connected. Crazy, crazy world.
So I thought just for fun I would just post some random facts about me, because that way I'm talking about one of my favorite topics (moi) and hopefully getting past my burn-out at the same time.
  • Do you believe in God? Yes very much so
  • Ever been to Paris? No but hopefully someday...
  • Are you competitive? Only behind the wheel
  • Current favorite alcoholic drink? bella rose martini
  • How long have you been on the internet? I think since 1998
  • First adult romance ever read? "Burning Obsession" by Carole Mortimer when I was 12
  • First car? 1990 Buick Skylark
  • Favorite season? spring when everything is in bloom
  • Are you a girly girl? not really, but I love to do my nails and wear pretty necklaces
  • Celebrity appeal you just don't get? Justin Timberlake - he does nothing for me
  • Guilty pleasure? the really steamy/dirty erotic romances
  • Worst habit? Is laziness a habit, or a personality flaw?
  • Can you ice skate? No, and here I was, born in northern MN, go figure
  • What do you like about yourself? uh, my small wrists?
  • What age were you when you left home for good? 19, and it was over 500 miles away
  • Do you like talking on the phone? I'd rather not
  • Do you believe in miracles? You betcha
  • If you could travel to space, would you go? Don't know, I'm afraid of heights, but now if Gerard Butler were going...
  • Current favorite pop/soda? Cherry Coke Zero
  • Internet time sucker? Twitter
  • Movie everyone has seen but you? E.T.
  • Ethnicity? Finnish, possibly 100%
  • Ever been to the mother country? Yeah when I was 21 and I LOVED it
  • What are you currently reading? "Pleasure Unbound" by Larissa Ione (finally!)
  • Parting words? Good night!

Thank you to all the bloggers, surfers and lurkers that stop by, whether you leave a comment or not. You really make my day :)

Book Blogger Appreciation Week
Photobucket
I saw over at one of my fave blogs, Book Binge, that My Friend Amy is putting together a Book Blogger Appreciation Week and it sounded pretty cool so I thought I'd join in on the fun. The details from Amy's blog below:
Book Bloggers: You work hard. You read books, you write reviews, you maintain relationships with your readers, publicists, and authors. You are constantly running to the post office to mail your giveaways and participating in carnivals to help boost traffic. You sometimes want to faint when you see the size of your TBR pile, but faithfully you read. And you do it because you love it. Book blogging is for most a hobby. But it's a hobby that takes a lot of work and time. It's a labor of love.
I've been blogging for three years but only really got into book blogging in the last year. I have found, without a doubt, that book bloggers are the kindest, most open minded, and supportive group of bloggers on the internet. With book blogging, it's about community and a love for the written word.
The Readers: We love you! You don't have a blog, but you read our reviews and share your thoughts with us. You enter our giveaways and click on our Amazon associates link. We do this for you and appreciate your readership. We hope you'll join in the fun and festivities of BBAW! (we'll have a special contest just for you!)
Book Blogger Appreciation Week: Acknowledging the hard work of book bloggers and their growing impact on book marketing and their essential contribution to book buzz in general, I am excited to announce the first Book Blogger Appreciation Week. Think of it as a retreat for book bloggers and a chance for us to totally nerd out over books together. And of course, shower each other with love and appreciation.
Register: In order to experience the maximum impact of the week, I invite you to register your participation (just like a retreat)! To register, just send an email to bookbloggerappreciationweekATgmailDOTcom with your blog url and what you consider your niche...i.e, general book blog, classics blog, personal blog with a healthy dose of books, YA books blog, etc. Then, add one of the two buttons at the bottom of this post to your sidebar. If you are a reader (no blog) just send an email announcing your plans to follow along.
Why bother? If you register, you will be added to a book blog directory which will exist long after this week is over. Additionally, you will receive one raffle entry into the daily giveaways during BBAW here at My Friend Amy.
Awards: Oh yes, there will be awards. The Oscars of Book Blogging. :) Nominations start next week.
Spread the Word: If you are excited about this idea like I am and the other book bloggers who are helping, please consider writing a post on your blog announcing this event and inviting other book bloggers and readers to join.
Help Wanted: If you have a talent for designing buttons (like those below) and would like to donate some of your time and skill to me, please email me personally at mypalamyATgmailDOTcom. You can use these nifty little buttons to promote the cause as well:

Oops, I shouldn't have said that....
Photobucket

I just finished Toni Blake's "Letters to a Secret Lover", and the main character, Lindsey, got me thinking about something (this seems to happen a lot). Lindsey writes a popular advice column for lovers, and her blog gets a lot of traffic. Her personal life is fairly public, and that is of her own choice as she posts information and revealing tidbits about fashion and her upcoming wedding. Things get ugly when a revealing picture is taken of her and her fiance' in the middle of a fight and ends up on the internet. This signals the end of her engagement. She decides she's not qualified to give love advice, and takes an indefinite break from her blog.
Other stuff happens later in the book that has her feeling confident enough to go back to her column, and to revealing a lot about what's currently going on in her personal life. She also reveals a lot of personal information about the man she's involved with, things that eventually come back to haunt them both.
My question today is this: how much is too much? I guess because I blog, this topic really hit home for me. I don't reveal a lot of stuff about my personal life (ahem, I tend to talk more about my friends' dramas than my own but I do try to keep names out of it) because I'm just not that kind of person. But there are bloggers out there with spouses/boyfriends/partners that share parts of their personal lives that make me wonder how the other person feels about that stuff out there floating in cyberspace.
I know that some of the bloggers that do that have spouses, etc. who know about the blogging and occasionally add their own input to posts. That's cool. I don't have a problem with that. I just wonder about the ones that reveal a lot of ultra personal information about their sex lives or their families or where they live and/or work. Think about it: you really don't know who might be reading your blog. In LTASL, it turns out that Lindsey had at least one fan that was a little too caught up in her life. In her case, it turned out to be a dangerous situation. And while some of us (okay, just me *g*) aren't anywhere near that popular, I still post pictures occasionally of what I look like, or what some of my online friends look like.
It's a strange thing, the intimacy of the internet. It lulls you into this sense of security that makes you feel safe and surrounded by friends. You share. You reach out to people. You have fun and learn things and sometimes if you're really lucky, you get to meet those online friends in person that you have a connection with. It can be a really special thing.
Do you think you share too much?
Where do you draw the line?
Ever post anything you later regretted?

Welcome....
...to the new look! I know, I know, it was long past time.
Back in 2006, when I first started blogging, I was such a novice, and was drawn to the sparklies and eye-squinting colors. Well, I'm older now, and hopefully wiser, and right now I'm totally in love with the new look. It suits the person I am now yet still reflects my favorite things, just not so painfully.
I'm updating the sidebar - getting rid of old links for sites that either don't exist anymore or haven't posted in a loooong time. It's been a hard thing to do, as I don't want to get rid of some of them (Mailyn's for example - miss her). I'm also adding new links for new friends and blogs I visit. Hopefully I don't forget anyone.
Thank you Frauke!!!!!
And Holly, I hope you're finally able to load the new blog!

Congrats to dear Julie in Ohio who gets the signed copy of"Power of Love". Thanx for stopping by, my friend :) I have your address, just need to make my way to the post office.
My new blog template is ready and rarin' to go, but I decided to clean up some of my links, update the old stuff and add new stuff, and wth the long weekend coming up, that's my project. I plan to roll out the new look on Monday. And a huge, huge, HUGE "thank you" to Frauke from Croco Designs who had to put up with me, and gave me a beautiful new blog look in the process. I can't wait to show it off :)

Photobucket
I'll leave you with a little bit of pretty to help get you through the day. If you're like me and you have to work today while everyone else is on vacay for the holiday weekend, you may need it. Just leave him in one piece for me, will ya? ;)

Blogging? Can't right now, I'm reading...
It's true, blog burn-out has set in, and it shows. I just haven't had the heart to blog lately anyway. I'd rather be outside right now in the gorgeous 70+ degree weather we've been having, or at the very least, reading. So, I will most likely be M.I.A. for the next several days.
Friday I leave for D.C. to meet up with some of my favorite online friends for the weekend, and hopefully I'll be back with lots of pictures and stories to share. I am so looking forward to this, having known many of them for at least 2 years.
What have you been up to?
Planning on meeting any online friends anytime this year?

Why do you blog?
Photobucket

Hmmm, why do I blog? I've thought a lot about this, mostly because it's been two years or so since I created this place, and I like the idea of having some sort of purpose in my little corner of the world.

The main reason I started to blog is because of my love of romance novels. See, in real life, none of my close friends, heck, not even any of my acquaintances, read romances. Not one. To be so passionate about something and to not have anyone to share it with is, well, lonely. About 4 years ago, I started to become more actively involved in meeting other readers - whether online or in person - who felt the same way about the genre that I do, and I loved having this community to reach out to, to learn from, and to find good recs. But even that wasn't quite enough, because the thing is, I love to hear myself talk(or in this case, read what I have to say). And there were other things I wanted to discuss, like movies. And hotties. So I created my little world and made it public. It's my little corner, and I rather like it.

Here, I can post about other things I'm passionate about, like the troops, or causes supporting children. Or how beautiful Richard Armitage is. Even my long-standing (i.e. tiresome?) crush on cover model Nathan Kamp is welcome here. It's my place, and you're all welcome, but no one has to feel like they have to stick around if they choose not to. After all, "exciting" was never my middle name, and it's too late to change that now.
Sometimes I consider giving it up, feeling like it's all been said and done by way more eloquent and interesting people than me. Maybe one day I will sail off into the sunset, never to bore anyone again. So far, that day hasn't come, must to the dismay of others.

My blog will never be too controversial, or popular, or cutting edge. There are a million blogs just like mine, and not a lot sets me apart from the others. Sometimes I might get up on my soapbox and vent, but overall, this place blends right into the wordwork. It's who I am, what I do best, and there's just no other way I can be. I'm not looking to change the world. I just want to talk about the stuff I like, make a few friends, and feel like a part of something for a little while. I can be completely happy with that.

What about you - why do you blog?

How long have you been blogging?

Do you ever get tired, and just want to give it up?

Blogging slump....
Work has been crazy and exhausting since we are relocating our offices this week and when I'm at home, I'm finally able to relax and enjoy some good books and that's been heaven, but in the meantime, I've lost my blogging drive. I have about 15 posts in the hopper, just needing to be tweaked before I let them out to play in blogland, and the desire to do so just hasn't been there for the last 2 weeks. Plus my weekends are pretty booked up for the next month or so, which is great, but I need some "Stacy ~ time" or I'm gonna be a total crab. I'm more of a loner and enjoy time to myself and right now I've depleted that bank and it needs to be refilled. Does anybody else get like that or is it just me?

  • Judy F, I will be sending your book I just haven't been to the bookstore (gasp!)
  • Sue A, I have your book & address, I just haven't been to the post office either

Haven't done much in the way of being nice either LOL. I'm working on it, really I am, but I feel like I just don't have enough energy to go around. Maybe I just need chocolate.

I'm also looking forward to seeing a few movies out there - "Stardust" and "The Brave One". Anyone see anything lately that they'd recommend?

Contests out in the blogosphere....
There are quite a few fun blog things and contests out there, so I thought I'd highlight a few of them. There's:
Collette Gale's erotic take on "The Phantom of the Opera" is called "Unmasqued". She is giving away some ARCs. Just enter the contest by Thursday morning by going here.
Win a copy of Meljean Brook's "Demon Angel" by visiting her blog and commenting. Contest ends April 15th, so don't miss out. Go here for more information....
Blogger Ames is giving away some books, and she still has a few left. To see if there's anything left over that you'd like to get, go visit the dear girl here.
Alyssa has a cool contest running for a copy of Sasha White's "Lush", which I myself have read and enjoyed, so get your hands on a copy today. You have until April 15th to enter Alyssa's contest right over...here.
And I cannot forget that the incomparable Mailyn (sorry Mailyn!) has a contest running over at Twisted Kingdom that ends April 15th as well. In honor of TK's re-birth, there is a contest going on. For more deets, go here.
Okay that ought to keep you somewhat busy. Don't forget to drop in and say "hi" to me LOL.

Perhaps you'll help me spread the word about: Romance: By the Blog "Hot Topic Week: Eros, Erotica, and Erotic Romance,"Dec. 4-8. Here's the line-up:
