Naughty Housewives" by Elizabeth Scott (2007)
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Paperback: 272 pages
Publisher: NAL Trade (January 2, 2007)
ISBN-10: 0451220382

Three stories of uninhibited women who won't let marriage put an end to their sex lives.
Shelby has lost trust in her husband, Eric, whose one-night stand put their marriage on the rocks. One thing can save it: tit for tat. All Shelby wants is to even the score. But her perfect fling with a younger man comes with a shocking surprise-especially for Eric.
Lori is a bride with a problem. After only eighteen months, the honeymoon is over. Kent can be a dream between the sheets, but the quickies just aren't cutting it. Until Lori decides to set a new standard in low-down and dirty nights.
Dani has a great new husband in Trevor. Then she finds his nasty little secret-a stash of extreme European erotica. It's terribly forbidden. And totally irresistible. Something this good really needs to be shared.
"Tit for Tat": Shelby's husband Eric has betrayed their marriage vows by having a one-night stand while on a business trip. Consumed with guilt for neglecting her husband in the past, she feels she may have been partially responsible for Eric's actions, but while she wants to fight for her marriage and make it work, she doesn't think she can get past it unless she "evens the score" and sleeps with another man. Eric is understandably devastated, but agrees if it will bring his wife back to him. Not one to put things off, Shelby leaves the house immediately, with no plan other than to find a suitable guy to spend the night with. Eric follows her, not to stop her but to make sure she's safe, and watches as she nervously selects the guy, then takes him to a nearby motel. But what ends up being a cold act of revenge ends up changing their marriage in a way neither of them expected, and bringing them closer together than ever....
"Tuesdays with Lori" : Lori loves her husband and the life they have planned together. Working hard, making sacrifices, it will all be worth it in the end. But after only 18 months of marriage, their sex life has been reduced to tired gropings in the dark, and Lori wants more. Much more. So with Kent's work schedule in mind, she has worked out a plan to liven up the bedroom by having all-out, wild sex on Tuesdays. But first, she has to make Kent want it bad. He has to hunger for her and think of nothing but sex. And she accomplishes just that. Kent loves Lori, but now he craves his hot, little wife like a drug, but he can't touch her for seven (!) days. The sweet, sexy woman he fell in love with has become a hot, addictive witch who fuels his fantasies. The love of his life has truly become the woman of his dreams.
"G Marks the Spot" : Sweet, maternal Dani misses her globe-trotting, gorgeous husband, Trevor. After 8 months of marriage, this is their first night apart, and it's been difficult on both of them. Left alone in their home, Dani takes this time to explore the sprawling mansion, and discover all its secrets. While she hoped to learn more about her new husband, she didn't expect to find the collection of extremely sexy DVDs behind a locked door, but now that she has, she has every intention of finding out just what kind of man Trevor is, and if she's woman enough to satisfy his desires. Trevor has always been self-sufficient, ever since his parents divorced and he's had to depend on himself to get through it. Finding Dani has opened up his world to love, and he cherishes more than he ever thought possible. She's always enjoyed their time together in the bedroom, never shying away from his touch, but how will she feel about the sexy movies he likes to watch? Or the locked room in their house? Well, there's really only one way to find out, and Trevor has the key....
What I liked about these stories is that they are about exploring one's fantasies in a loving, devoted relationship, and in this case, that relationship is marriage. I am a huge fan of erotic romance (stress the romance) so that was a major reason for me to pick up the book in the first place. There is humor and affection in each story, which makes the hot, raging sex even better, imo. These stories prove that sex should not end after the wedding, but rather continue to bring couples closer together and give them more confidence about their personal sexuality. In case you missed it: it's okay to fantasize, to want something more, to explore and have fun and feel good about yourself and your body.
Elizabeth Scott (aka Janice Maynard) doesn't evade the consenting issue, either. There are certain experiences (i.e. potential anal sex) that make the heroine uncomfortable, and I liked that it wasn't forced on her if she truly didn't want it. Nowadays, you can't find many erotic romances without the (obligatory) anal sex scenes, and certainly not one where the heroine says "no" and means it. I liked that the hero and heroine didn't have to like every single thing that was brought to the table, or to the bedroom. Being game for anything and everything is only sexy if it fits the characters and they really want it. Each of the stories has its own individual fantasies, and it was a refreshing change from many of the cliche'd erotic romance out there. This is my first, but not the last, book from ES. Dang, I love the hot stuff ;)

"Hunters: Heart & Soul" by Shiloh Walker
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Paperback: 304 pages
Publisher: Berkley Trade (April 3, 2007)
ISBN-10: 0425213927
ISBN-13: 978-0425213926

In the shades of night, when the evil are free to seduce the weak and indulge their desires, there are still those who will fight to the death for the innocent.
They are called The Hunters.
They are at the heart of a sensuous and strange new world...
Two men. Two women. Paranormal warriors and eternal lovers who keep the undead in line by destroying those who have gone rogue. They serve as Judge, Jury, and Executioner. They are as merciless as their prey.
And they are its soul.
But in this strange enclave of midnight retribution, some discover a hunger they'd never imagined, a love that crosses unnatural boundaries, and a blood reckoning with a damnable past that could save the Hunters or destroy them.
"Soul of a Hunter"
This story is one I've been waiting for with the utmost impatience - the story of Leandra and Mike. It's like, number 97 in the whole Hunters series, but it was well worth the wait. While it is a stand alone, I strongly suggest reading the previous stories so you can get a feel for these characters' pasts, and the history of the Hunters. (For a complete list, visit Shi's site here).
Leandra is now a Hunter, has been for awhile. Once a powerful witch who was raised by the Scythe, she originally believed the Hunters were out to destroy the innocent, she committed many vengeful acts against them, one of them was to shoot and almost kill shapeshifter Michael Prescott. The Hunters hated her for what she did, wanted her dead, but her life was spared when she saved one of their own. Now she walks the earth alone, one of them, but yet still apart. Solitary.
Out of all the Hunters, Mike is the one who has reason to hate her the most. He almost died by her hand. But instead when he looks at the sad, proud Leandra, he knows she is his mate, and wants to be with her more than anything. He senses the good in her heart, as well as her self-hatred, and knows he has a battle on his hands. His proud Hunter won't give in easily, but then neither will he.
If I have any complaint about this story, which I've reeeeally been looking forward to, is the excessiveness of Leandrea's guilt. Yes, she knows she was wrong, and yes, the Hunters are protectors of the innocent, not horrible monsters who pray on those who are weaker - so yes, she was wrong. We're clear on that. But it wasn't her fault that she was brainwashed as a child. She didn't know any better at the time, yet when she figured it out, she accepted the truth and even tried to make amends by using her powers to destroy the true evil. But she's still feeling guilty, unworthy. I could understand this if her story took place a few months after she shot Mike, but it's been five years! So I was a tad ticked off at Leandra for wallowing, but what can I say: she is a kiss-ass heroine with a lot of pride, so I couldn't help but to love her anyway.
Other than that sticky point, I truly loved their story. Mike tried to give her time, and it was easier because she had left, went to roam the world, until she was called back for training. But now that Leandra was in his life again, he wouldn't wait any longer. She wasn't going to avoid him this time. Not anymore. She belonged with him. He knew it, and now she was going to know it. (Oh my, Mike can convince me of anything, at anytime).
And as we all know, evil never dies, so as Hunters, they are surrounded by those who wish to hurt and destroy. This time evil comes in the form of a beautiful woman-child who revels in the ugliness of her evil and covets even more of its twisted power. This monster must be stopped before any of them end up dead, but it may be too late....
"Heart of a Hunter"
Malachi. A vampire. A Hunter who has faced the world, alone, for centuries. Yet for all that time, he's had a lover, a woman who comes to him in his dreams and blows his mind, but he cannot see her face or know her name. In fact, he doesn't know if she even exists, but he knows he wants her with his entire being. No one else makes him feel this way.
Except for that lovely witch, Kelsey, whom he's wanted since the first moment he saw her, ten years ago. Most of the time she ignores him, denies the heat that burns blazing hot between them, but the Council has summoned him, and it's Kelsey's duty to bring him back, and makes the trip to Alaska. Malachi is tired, and wants no part of that life anymore, especially while he's still grieving from the loss of a dear friend. What he wants, for once, is to get lost in mindless passion with Kelsey, and this time he goes after what he wants, what they both want. Kelsey temporarily becomes the lover of his dreams, and their joining is magnificent, all-consuming.
Malachi is rocked by the experience with her. It prompts him to vanish, leaving Kelsey feeling confused and hurt. But instead of moping around waiting around for him to come to his senses, Kelsey returns to England, and to a shocking revelation: an innocent woman is about to be executed by orders from the Council, and Kelsey must stop it from happening or live with the knowledge of blood on her hands. The only way she can stop it is with Malachi's help; only he has that kind of power. So once again she seeks him out, determined to make him listen. But her plea is met with vehement denial, and time is quickly running out for the innocent prisoner. Kelsey must find someone else willing to listen, and help her betray the Council...
Immediately upon hearing Kelsey's request, Malachi is filled with such rage he can't even see straight. How could Kelsey ask him to save the person who had killed his beloved friend? It didn't make any sense. The only way to find out what the fierce healer could possibly be thinking it to track her back to England, hopefully in time to prevent the fierce, maddening woman from getting herself killed for what is considered an act of treason by the Council. But honor and duty could end up being her downfall. Will Kelsey's efforts to defend an innocent woman cause Malachi to lose the precious gift he never even knew he had all along?
Leandra's story only came second to this one: that of Malachi's HEA, and I have been amply rewarded for my patience. Centuries old, loneliness and time have caused Malachi to become bitter and tired. Rules cannot control him. Malachi is a power unto himself, and his aching soul called out from the moment he appeared on the page. I felt his pain, his loneliness, and knew it would take a special woman, one who was fearless yet also kind, to soothe his empty heart. The thought of Malachi spending the rest of his days alone was heartbreaking. Shiloh created in Kelsey a heroine that is neither weak or hard, but rather a fascinating combination of healer, warrior and pacifist. She was strong in her beliefs, not backing down from death, and fiercely loyal to the Hunters. Her union with Malachi seemed like more of a natural progression rather than that of instant soulmates who resisted being together. And it worked perfectly. Once again I was lost in the world of the Hunters, and I am happy to say there are several stories I haven't even read yet - and thankfully I have them all in my TBR pile. It's a beautiful thing.

"Smart and Sexy" by Jill Shalvis (April 2007)

Paperback: 288 pages
Publisher: Brava (April 1, 2007)
ISBN-10: 0758214456
ISBN-13: 978-0758214454

FLYING SOLO IS WAY OVERRATED

Noah Fisher has worked for months to make Sky High the most prestigious charter airline in California. He's long overdue for a break - something involving ski slopes, cold beers, and hot ski bunny babes, not necessarily in that order. The itinerary doesn't include being hijacked by Bailey Sinclair, gorgeous widow of one of Sky High's wealthiest (ex-) clients. But here they are, and being crammed in a cockpit with the scared, stubborn, unbelievably sexy former model he's been fantasizing about invokes Superman tendencies that could get Noah in serious trouble.

Baily is desperate to find the stash of money hidden by her conniving, thieving late husband - before the bad guys he owed find her. It's a long shot, but nothing compared to the gamble she's taking by being so close to Noah. Every minute in his company has Bailey thinking about doing crazy, reckless things like touching, grabbing, kissing...and oh wow, being kissed right back. Suddenly, seat-of-your-pants seems like the only way to fly, and maybe it's the altitude playing tricks, but this is one trip she never wants to end...

The past six months had been extremely difficult on Noah, however now he's ready to get back in the swing of things with some much-needed R&R - on the slopes, and between the sheets. But fate has other plans, in the form of one beautiful ex-model who's always set Noah's heart racing, even though he had no business noticing the very married Bailey Sinclair and all her assets. But Bailey is widowed now, has been for some time, and she wants something from him. Really, really badly. Looking into those baby blues of hers, how can he possibly refuse?

Bailey hates having to depend on yet another man for anything, but thanks to her lying rat bastard of a dead husband, she's in deep trouble, and the only person she believes is willing and able to help her is seriously sexy pilot Noah Fisher. Bailey's felt an instant attraction to Noah since the very beginning, but as a married woman, she honors her marriage vows. And now that her not so dearly departed hubby has left her with nothing but trouble, she turns to Noah almost unwillingly, yet desperately needing a way out of a really bad situation. Once he takes her where she wants to go, she plans on ditching him for good...only Noah has other plans.

Noah can think of worse things than being held hostage by the gorgeous, young widow, but not many. Suffering through his own troubles, he's in need of some serious "down time", but when Bailey hijacks him, he knows he's going to see it through to the end, whether Baily likes it or not. After all, he may never get the chance to be this close to her again, and he doesn't plan on passing up this opportunity to be with her, even if it's just to spend days being chased by bad guys.

I'm fairly new to Jill's books, though I visit her blog just about daily because she can convey so much with so few words. And she's funny as hell. I know some readers don't care about the author's personal lives, etc., but getting to know one through their blog paints a picture as I'm reading the story, and I happen to enjoy imagining how the author might have been thinking as they wrote a particular scene.

An issue I did have with the story was that I had a hard time with the heroine's name: I've known way too many people who have dogs named Bailey, so that threw me as I was reading it. And another thing that should have bothered me but didn't was that Bailey had some of the TSTL characteristics that can really ruin a book - she foolishly wanted to try to evade bad guys on her own, she wore silly shoes that are not made for walking much less running, she's not getting the obvious clue (the one her rat bastard hubby gave her the last time she saw him) until nearly the very end - but I liked Bailey, and considering that she was in danger, and at least smart enough to be realistically scared about it, I could forgive her these little quirks. Especially when she so stubbornly wanted to protect Noah. She adored the guy, wanted him bad, and cared enough not to want to see him get hurt. As stupid as that sounded - because without him she'd probably end up dead - I really, really liked that about her. She was a great match for Noah.

And was there hot sex, you ask? Oh yeah. Really scorching sex. Now that Noah had his fantasy crush within reach, he was not stupid enough not to act on their mutual attraction, and wow, you could have lit a bonfire with the sparks and heat these two generate! Every woman should have a man like Noah, if they don't already. Yeah, he had this crazy crush on her, but he didn't get all sappy and mopey and depressed about it. He respected that she was off-limits as a married woman, and didn't go chasing after her when her husband died. He was honorable. But he's a guy, and he wants her something fierce, so their first night together, he's not going to be a martyr and suffer in silence when they could both benefit from a night between the sheets. He's gonna get some. But he's gonna also make sure she enjoys it. Several times, in fact.

But things are not all rose-colored after a night of orgasms. They're not out of danger yet, and still go several days being chased by the bad guys, barely one step ahead of getting caught. Yet through it all, they work as a team, and slowly open up their bruised hearts as they learn to let go and fully trust in each other. You can see the attraction slowly turning into something deeper, something stronger, and it's wonderful to watch. I fell in love right along with them. This book made me sigh with happiness. I just loved it so much. Jill, you done good. Better than good - you rock!

Another thing is that this is book #1 in a trilogy, so fortunately there are more fun and games to be had. Noah and Bailey didn't survive their adventure without a little help from Noah's friends: Shayne, Brody and Maddie, who all work for Sky High. They have a lot of history together, and I look forward to finding out more about them in future stories.. Be sure to check out the blurb for "Strong and Sexy", Shayne's story, here.

Authors coming out of the closet...
I won't lie: I love the sizzling hot, sexy romances. You know, the ones about fulfilling fantasies and losing one's inhibitions in pursuit of pleasure. Not only do they provide a safe way to explore and learn about yourself by fueling your imagination and freeing you from the guilt of enjoying what previously may have been considered wrong or dirty, or maybe just too wild, but they are a hell of a lot of fun to read! I don't see anything wrong with indulging in a fantasy or two, and I'm happy to find that stories like this are becoming more and more acceptable, and much easier to find.
Recently, Toni Blake came out and admitted that she also wrote as erotic romance author Lacey Alexander. I had no idea, though it appears I may have only been one of very few who didn't know. Now, I love Toni's books, recently having finished "Swept Away", which was sexy and romantic and full of adventure. The cool thing is, I was also a fan of Lacey's books way before I knew it was actually Toni writing them. Find out that they are one and the same person was like icing on the cake. Here is a sampling of Lacey's books:

Combine Chris's searing seductiveness with the island's legendary free-spirited debauchery, and before her vacation is through, Carrie will experience a stunning sexual awakening she's not ready to leave behind when the trip is over.

But Toni is not the only author who's been keeping secrets. Another one of my favorite authors, and my first ever interviewee, Janice Maynard , very recently admitted that she also writes the spicier stories as Elizabeth Scott, and "her" first book, released in January 2007, is called "Naughty Housewives", with another one called "Spin the Bottle" geared for October 2007. Here's a glimpse of Elizabeth's writing:

I'm thrilled to be seeing them both in June and Lori Foster's Get-Together, where I can have them sign ALL their books. I couldn't be more proud of them, or be more excited to have more books from them to read. Especially the hot stuff. It totally rocks ;) Thank you, Toni and Janice, for keeping such wonderful secrets...and for finally sharing them with your fans.

Dammit! a.k.a. another contest
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Okay. (Deep breath). I did it. Again. Bought the damn RT magazine because I couldn't wait ONE EXTRA FREAKIN' DAY. Purchased it Sunday, my subscription issue arrived Monday. Should have known. Should have. That is the problem when you give into the instant gratification voice. But last month it came early, like around the 2nd or 3rd of the month, and this time it was the 16th - see why this keeps happening? No, me neither.
As I'm thumbing through the issue I bought, I tried to think of a blog contest question, and then my eyes were caught on an article about Mr. Romance 2006 (Rodney Chapman) however to me, the (unofficial) Mr. Romance of 2006...and 2007...is my favorite cover model Nathan Kamp, who shockingly enough, is not loved and adored by everyone. Huh. And NK just happens to be experiencing a rise in popularity again because he's on just about every other cover in the May 2007 of Romantic Times Magazine. That's when I chose my contest topic:
What is your favorite Nathan Kamp book cover?
If not NK (gasp!) who is your favorite cover model?
Who would you like to see as a cover model?
A winner will be chosen randomly on Saturday, April 21st, noon-ish, for the pristine, wrapped-in plastic, issue of RT magazine - May 2007. Good luck! (and long live Nathan Kamp book covers *g*)

"Close Encounters of the Sexy Kind" (April 2007)

Paperback: 304 pages

Sex with the perfect man is overrated, especially if your Mr. Perfect is a robot, and you know there's something better out there. Can Mala help it if “out there” is way out there? Her grandmother, an intergalactic traveler, left a diary behind describing the exceptional lovemaking talents of Earth men. There's also a documentary that depicts a comely young woman and a rugged-looking person she calls “Sheriff.” There are no Sheriffs on Mala's home planet. Solution? Head for Earth and get one of her own...
Sheriff Mason McKinley is having one hell of a week. First, the local conspiracy theorist called a bunch of reporters to town in search of Bigfoot, and now he insists he's seen a UFO land out near Devil's Bend. But when Mason rides out to investigate, instead of little green men, he finds the sexiest woman he's ever laid eyes on. Though Mala’s odd behavior—an obsession with the naked channel, straightforward offers of sex—might have something to do with amnesia, what red-blooded American male wouldn’t feel lucky? Still, Mason doesn't want to take advantage of a lost soul...however much she wants to be taken advantage of…
Mala lives on the perfect planet of Nerak, where there is a perfect smoothie for every mood, illness or problem, male robots for perfect sex, Elders who provide the perfect guidance, and oh yeah, no men to start wars. But all this perfection has Mala bored out of her mind and longing to find something that isn't so, well, perfect. Armed with her grandmother's diary and a strong case of wanderlust, Mala decides to head for planet Earth for some excitement and adventure. She only plans to be gone a few days - as distant traveling is forbidden - no one will even know she's gone.
Ha! We all know that for the lie it is because otherwise there would be no book! Mala is momentarily dazed by earth, then completely enthralled. Even the difficult stuff is a joy to her because it's "different". Mason is a lot like the sheriff in her movie, and thinks she's an illegal alien from Sweden instead of the planet Nerak. Her lies of omission combined with his willingness to believe are the perfect recipe for some funny moments as Mala acclimates herself to the ways of planet Earth. And of course, Mala and Mason are instanteously attracted to each other, and have unbelievably hot sex almost immediately.
Eventually though, her world catches up with her, and it's only a matter of time before she must go back or run the risk of being caught by alien hunters. By now, she's fallen hard for Mason, and for the people she's met on this amazingly messy and complicated planet, yet she wouldn't have it any other way.
Mason's a good guy who's finally found the woman who breaks through his solitude and makes him think of family and commitment. He loves the people in his town, is proud knowing he's trusted by them to protect them, but deep down he's always known he's wanted more. But the traditional women of his small Texas town don't make him feel the way Mala does, and if he can convince her to stay, maybe she'll give him the happily-ever-after he never knew he actually wanted before.
A bit of a warning: despite the steamy cover of the couple kissing, it's more of a light, fluffy read than an intense romance. While there are moments of incredible heat between Mala and Mason, it's less dark and serious then it would appear to be. I would have like to have seen more angst in this book, but I enjoyed it all the same. I loved Mala's reactions to things like chocolate(!) and alcohol, and Mason's enchantment with her. Mala's also not stupid, and has a rather strong independent streak, which made me like her even more.
Plus, Karen Kelley fans will easily recognize her trademark sassy humor in her latest release from Brava. CEOTSK is a fun and hot read that will simultaneously have you laughing and turning up the fan from all the heat between Mala and Mason. I am actually looking forward to the next installment.

frizzy up the girl....
I've been growing out my hair for awhile, and though it wasn't super-long, it was super straight, and super thin, and for someone with a pumpkin head such as myself, that really wasn't a good look. Despite numerous battles with my curling iron and gels and mousses, my hair became resistant to even the slightest wave, so I realized I had to make a decision: get it cut or suffer the agonies of "the perm".
Now I haven't had a perm in about 6 years, and after that one, I swore I'd never do it again. Part of the problem was, at that time I elected to go with a bit of a smaller curl, a tighter wave, and it was frizzy and hard to control. I know understood the hair issues of someone with naturally curly hair, and I hated it for the longest time.
Plus, a "perm" sounds so 80's, so dated, and I dreaded re-living that look LOL. Besides, I wanted to grow out my hair since I never really had long hair (when I was a kid, my hair was cut so short that people would say to my parents "Oh, are these your 3 boys" !!!) because my mother told me that by getting it cut, it would make it thicker. Such a liar, that woman. I think she just didn't want to have to deal with fixing a girl's long hair because when she was growing up, she had beautiful, thick, long hair that her mother would dress up and play with, and my mother absolutely hated being a living doll. She was more the low-maintenance, wild child type.
Anywayz, so Thursday I made the appointment (instant gratification is my motto) and Friday I suffered through 2 hours of sitting in a chair, smelling god-awful chemicals which last for days, and having neck strain from leaning back over the basin while my hair was rinced. Oh oh oh, but it was worth it!
Now my hair is fuller, softer, and rather cute on me (a challenge to meet, I swear to you), and well worth the trials and tribulations I went through to get it. So yeah, maybe I'm a little bit stuck in the 80's, but I'm rather happy with the look. And I didn't have to spend $200 either (which is something I refuse to do). I know that you get what you pay for, but I would rather spend my hard-earned moula on books instead of hair maintenance.
What about you - hair horror stories or happy endings?
Are you happy with your current look? What is your regular hair routine?
If you have a certain style, what would it be?

Oh how I love that sound.....
This is a topic I've been thinking about for awhile because I've noticed it quite a bit with myself lately, and also because it kinda amuses me. Believe it or not, despite my fangirl silliness over the hotties, in RL I'm someone who's got a pretty good grip on things, so I don't get all giggly or flustered over much....(okay, maybe Josh Bernstein, who've I've actually met). So here's the thing:
Certain male voices have rather a particularly strong effect on me. I can't explain the specific "why" of it, but for the most part, what works is pretty easy to figure out. I like deep voices, voices that I can feel in the pit of my stomach when I hear them, the kind that make me want to purr like a cat, much like the sensation I get when someone brushes my hair. It's purely a physical reaction I get whenever I hear a someone speak; it's not something I have any control over - it just happens. I guess it's the same way certain scents invoke a memory or a strong feeling.

Accents are one of the reasons a specific voice can work its magic on me. For example, an English accent, like that of Hugh Grant or Simon Cowell, doesn't do a thing for me. It sounds too bloody proper, even when the person speaking is swearing up a storm, and while they don't exactly repel me, they don't give me those happy shivers either. And some of the English slang puts me off, like the words "bloke", or "wanker", or "ballocks" or "bugger" (I know, I'm a total snob). So even as much as I love Colin Firth, it ain't his voice that does the trick - it's that scene from P&P, after he dives in the pond, wearing that billowing white shirt that totally makes me melt.

Australian accents....well, a few have the power. Keith Urban, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman. It's almost like a cross of Irish and English so the sound is almost lyrical, but sometimes a little too....boisterous to work on me everytime. Does that make sense? I think Paul Hogan ruined it for me. "G'day mate" does nothing for me after having seen "Crocodile Dundee".

Now Scottish or Irish accents are a different story. Did you ever see "Four Weddings and a Funeral", or "Sliding Doors"? John Hannah has one of those voices that I could listen to all day long and never get sick of it. Even playing a gay character in "4 Weddings" didn't take away from that amazing voice of his. I melt whenever I hear him talk, especially if it's in a hushed, quiet voice. Man oh man, if he could bottle that voice, I'd be one happy camper.

Oh, and I can't forget Gerard Butler. I've only seen him in "Lara Croft - Tomb Raiders: Cradle of Life" and even though he played the bad guy, oh what a bad guy he was! Gerard just seems to have this earthy appeal - he's sexy in a rugged, very masculine way, which is definitely my type of guy. I've always had a thing for Scotland, going back to my fascination with Loch Ness, and he seems to fit with that mystique.

Another actor from that Tomb Raider movie that has a lyrical voice is Djimon Hounsou. I recently saw him in "Blood Diamond" (never did post my review) and he was phenomenal in it. Djimon is from Benin, a country in west Africa, and I love hearing the sounds of his country in his voice. I feel like I'm getting a sense of it just by listening to him talk.

Now southern accents are tricky. I know that a lot of women really go for the southern gentleman thing, but again, too proper for moi. It has to be a combination of the deep voice, slight twang, hint of the devil in it for the voice to have any effect on me. I like listening to a lot of country singers talk because they sound so polite, yet at the same time, you can just hear the good old boy raising a little hell in it, you know, the kind that can get a woman to take her clothes off without even blinking....or is that just me?

My co-workers like to tease me because there is this older guy at work with a deep voice that has a hint of a southern accent, and it drives me rather crazy. I just love it. I sometimes call him over to talk to just for that reason. (And he is pretty good-looking for an old, married guy). Boy do I get razzed about it. What can I say, it's one of my guilty pleasures, and completely harmless; he has no idea what his voice does to me and I have no plans to tell him. I just love listening to him talk.
What about you: do voices drive you crazy?
Who could you listen to all day long?

How 'bout a little romance with your hockey?
Came across this today:

Hockey in romance books scores

ITHACA, N.Y., Apr 9, 2007 (UPI via COMTEX) -- Check this: Fans across North America are getting revved up not just for the Stanley Cup but also a crop of romance novels with hockey as a backdrop.
Knights in shining armor set in days of yore are getting forechecked by a new breed of woo pitchers wearing jerseys.
"I wanted a great leader -- good-looking, driven and passionate," said Deirdre Martin, the Ithaca, N.Y., writer who modeled parts of her "Body Check" leading man after Rangers' great Mark Messier.
Sue Grimshaw, a romance buyer for Borders bookstores, said the sub-genre is a hit. "Hockey players are alpha males, and for romance readers, they're good characters for the story," she told the New York Post.
Rachel Gibson, whose "See Jane Score" reached the 2003 Romance Writers of America Top 10, said she knew it would be a hard sell but she went for it anyway.
"The appeal of hockey is it's not politically correct," she said in the newspaper article. "They hit each other. They knock each other out. It's testosterone driven."
And the NHL couldn't be more pleased. NHL spokeswoman Bernadette Mansur told the Post, "We're thrilled. Given the handsome players and their good character, it's not surprising."

No, it's not surprising. Missing teeth and crooked noses aside, the arrogance, competitiveness and physical endurance and aggressiveness of a hockey player (any sports figure, really) fits perfectly with the alpha males that I love so much, and I am glad to see that it's being acknowledged. Yet aren't they a little late to the party? Come on, some of us have known this for years already.

"See Jane Score" is one of my all-time favorite romances, and definitely my favorite by Rachel Gibson. I think we all wanted to see that horseshoe tattoo. That was totally, totally hot.
Do you like sports heroes?
Which book would be a favorite?

I've been tagged about my obsessions
The sweet and talented Samhaim author Kate Davies tagged me about obsessions - her ears must have been burning LOL. So here are some of mine, the ones that stand out the most:
1. Cleanliness. Okay, I'm not obsessive-compulsive about it, but since I deal with the public, I'm always conscious about myself and whether I have bad breath, for one thing. I like to drink chocolate milk in the morning (to get my calcium and chocolate fix) so before I start, I always make sure I have gum or mints if I don't get a chance to brush my teeth while at work. I think I'm obsessed with it because of other people's breath, whether from smoking, drinking coffee which actually smells kinda good, or eating onions (yuck!). The other thing I notice is when people don't shower that morning. It's something that can't be hidden by perfume or cologne. So if you shower the night before instead, believe me, a person can tell. It smells like onions or sweaty gym socks. Since I hate onions so much, it's a huge turn-off, one that others may not share, but it's why I always shower in the morning during the week without fail. Plus the idea of sleeping (and sweating) then dressing in clean clothes doesn't really make sense to me. Sorry to be so harsh, but when you deal with people, you learn a lot.
2. Reading books in order. I hate starting in the middle of a series. It totally spoils my mood and I can't enjoy the book/series. It's that whole anal thing again, I guess. I also wish publishing companies would do a better job of labeling books so that you knew it was part of a series, especially if it's a long series (i.e. Christine Feehan's Dark series).
3. Getting all the books in a series before reading them. Okay I don't do this will all series because that would just be insane, but I did do it after reading "Naked In Death" by JD Robb, then I HAD to go and get all the other books that were out at that time, which was about 12 books. An expensive obsession, let me tell ya.
4. Blogging. To my eternal shame, I am such a blog addict, always looking for new places to visit. Since I can't blog at work, I've come up with a schedule to check blogs, and here is a list of the ones I check in the morning before I got to work: Deadline Hellions, Plotmonkeys, Romancing the Blog, Romance by the Blog, Access Romance, Brava Authors, Sylvia Day, Alison Kent, Jill Shalvis, and if I get a chance, the Goddess blogs, Squawk Radio, Sybil's blog, Karen Scott's blog, and Dear Author, give or take a few more. Other blogs I frequent on a regular basis include HelenKay Dimon's, Vamps and Scamps, Shiloh Walker's, Kelley V's, and Sanctuary's Finest, with a bunch more that get a visit maybe once a week or once a month. Keep in mind that not all of these blogs update daily or even weekly, so it's not as insane as it appears...at least that's what I tend to believe. Hey, I don't watch t.v., so I need some kind of hobby!
5. Romance novels, generally. Those by Brockmann specifically. This is the one author whose books I will buy in HC on the day of release. I will actually go during work - at my lunch hour - and lose my coveted parking spot to get my hands on one of her books. Starting with the first SB I ever read, "Kiss and Tell", through the last one from her Troubleshooter series, I am completely hooked on her books and no one could ever convince me otherwise. I am a die-hard, rabid SB fangirl, and damn proud of it. (However in my obsessiveness, I don't require that all other readers adore her as I do. I am an equal opportunity fangirl, and believe to each their own). August 14th can't get here fast enough.....
I tag...Kelley V, Toni Anderson, and...anyone else who wants to play :)

"Dirty" by Megan Hart (January 2007)

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

Paperback: 432 pages
Publisher: Spice (January 1, 2007)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 0373605137
ISBN-13: 978-0373605132

This is what happened...
I met him at the candy store. He turned and smiled at me and I was surprised enough to smile back. This was not a children's candy store, mind you--this was the kind of place you went to buy expensive imported chocolate truffles for your boss's wife because you felt guilty for having sex with him when you were both at a conference in Milwaukee. Hypothetically speaking, of course.
I've been hit on plenty of times, mostly by men with little finesse who thought what was between their legs made up for what they lacked between their ears. Sometimes I went home with them anyway, just because it felt good to want and be wanted, even if it was mostly fake.
The problem with wanting is that it's like pouring water into a vase full of stones. It fills you up before you know it, leaving no room for anything else. I don't apologize for who I am or what I've done in--or out--of bed. I have my job, my house and my life, and for a long time I haven't wanted anything else. Until Dan. Until now.
When I first read this blurb on the back of the book, I wasn't too impressed. The premise just didn't interest me, plus "Dirty" is marketed as an erotic novel, from the new Spice line, no less, and as a rule, erotica has never been one of my favorite genres to read. The picture on the cover also seemed to enforce my belief that it wasn't my type of story. It's a gorgeous cover, a bit naughty, but tied in with erotica, I pegged it as a woman's sexual journey, filled with frequent and wickedly raunchy encounters emphasizing sexual freedom, and to be honest, I would rather read something from Ellora's Cave or Samhain Publishing because then at least I'd be guaranteed the HEA.
But in my sporadic blog-hopping, I came across a few extremely compelling reader reviews (this one's from Wendy) that got me thinking that I might actually want to read this book. So I took the plunge and bought it.
And oh, let me tell you it was one of the best decisions I've made in my recent reading history. I was completely hooked into it. I actually had to read it twice before I could find the words to describe this book to my satisfaction. However, let me also start out by saying "Dirty" is not a "safe" read in any sense of the word - it takes you to some rather damaged places and might make you feel uncomfortable, but at the same time, it's rather a heartening story; I ended it with a smile on my face, both times. Be forewarned though: if you are looking for a light-hearted, fluffy romance, you won't find it here. But at the same time, this is a romantic story, just not something you'd find in most romance novels.
Elspeth "Elle" Kavanagh is a junior vice president at an accounting firm, and she dresses as you would expect in black skirts and white button-down shirts with her long hair pulled up. Though now she's chosen to be celibate, 3 years ago it wasn't unusual for her to have random sexual encounters with complete strangers while trying to fill the emptiness inside, and to stop the endless counting that only ceases when she's drunk or having sex. To Elle, the sex is easier than intimacy of any kind, but after awhile even the sex wasn't working, so instead of living, she exists. And for awhile, that works for her.
When Elle first meets Dan Stewart in that fancy candy store, she can't stop thinking about him, and ends up wanting what she hasn't had in 3 long years. He makes good with some hot sexual encounters, and once Elle is convinced he got what he wanted, she is ready to cut bait and move on. After all, she doesn't date, so she sees no point in seeing him ever again. Yet clever boy that Dan is, he finds a work-around, and they continue to meet for sex.
Now you might think that what follows is one endless sexcapade after another, and while the scenes are frequent and explicit, especially in the beginning, they are really stepping stones in the blurred glimpses into Elle's life. She is trying to hold the pieces of her fragile solitude together, convinced if anyone gets too close, her protective shell will disintegrate. While having casual sex, in an attempt to fill the vast emptiness inside herself, is considered harmless to her self-control, any act of intimacy or genuine friendship threatens this shell. Elle would rather face the future alone than take the risk of having something meaningful with a decent guy.
"Dirty" is told in first person, which can be tricky if in the wrong hands, but I think it works amazingly well here. This is Elle's story, told best by her, and I felt her ache of loneliness, the incessant need for something to fill those empty places inside. In the beginning I admit to having feelings of apathy towards Elle, but slowly, almost without me being conscious of it, I began to seriously worry about her and sincerely wanted her to experience if not a happy ending, at least a hopeful future of some kind. Dan was more solid than I originally gave him credit for, sticking with Elle through some of her worst moments when most guys would have bailed long ago. I wasn't sure if I should root for him or call him an idiot, but before the end, seeing how he was with Elle, and watching as he truly began to care for her, I fell completely under his spell, and could see that he had a way about him that helped her to find the courage to heal.
While most of us read romances to escape, to fantasize and to dream, sometimes you come across one filled with true pain and misery, and it's actually a good thing to follow it through to the end. This was a heart-breaking story, and it will stay with me for a long time to come. Not so much because it was so painfully wrenching at times, but because the ending was not a ride into the sunset, but a promise to take it one day at a time and to trust in the here and now instead of letting the ghosts from the past control you. Who would I recommend this book to? Anyone not planning to wear rose-colored glasses while reading it. Someone who's not afraid to go to dark and scary places or to cry when you get there. Someone who knows that sometimes the best stories are the ones that are the hardest to read - not because they are boring or ineffective, but because they take you out of your comfort zone and force you to figure it out. Those are the readers I'd recommend this book to...

Most embarrassing crush...no foolin'
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
I remember the first time I went to see "The Wedding Singer". I went with my friend Liz, who wanted to see it because she loved the 80's. I thought it would be a fun movie that would bring back lots of memories, and it did.
But the surprising thing about it, to my mortification, was that I developed a crazy crush on Adam Sandler! I'd seen some of his movies before, enjoyed watching him on "Saturday Night Live", but never gave him much thought...until this movie. Which prompted me to see it again. And again. And buy the DVD release.
The biggest draw was his character. So different from the goofy characters he played in "Billy Madison" or "Happy Gilmore", I found myself rather infatuated by his portrayal of wedding singer Robbie Hart, who's heart is broken when he is stood up at his wedding by his unfeeling fiancee.
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Robbie is not the typical leading man in a romantic comedy - he's kinda dorky, way too nice and rather sappy, a bit too passive, yet his vulnerability got to me and melted my impressionable little heart. It was a huge relief that Adam Sandler wasn't re-enacting the same character he has in so many of his other movies. I loved the softer side of Sandler LOL. And now I can't wait to see his latest movie, which is a huge departure for him: "Reign Over Me".
So who's your embarrassing crush?
