Calling all authors....
I don't know that all that many authors visit here, but maybe some of the regulars could pass this on? Thanx bunches.
My friend Laurie does an annual Holidays for the Troops project every year, and one enticement to get donations is to offer up some cool prizes to anyone who donates. Maybe a book or small gift. If you're interested, in participating, please let me know - trelainastarblazer@yahoo.com - and I'll be sure to get you in contact with Laurie. Thank you for your support :)

Holidays for the Troops
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

It's that time of year again, and my good friend and all-around angel, Laurie, is having her 3rd annual donation drive for the troops who are serving overseas. While that in itself is a pretty cool thing to be a part of, Laurie has sweetened the pot by having a raffle for prizes, many of which include books donated by some very generous authors, as well as gift cards and even some baskets. It's really a great opportunity to show your support, and to win a prize!
The deadline for donations is November 24th. Click here for more information, and/or to stop by and say "hey" to a really cool chick.

Let's take care of our troops
Read this news story this morning and felt it bears repeating:

Sunday, July 15, 2007

WASHINGTON - "The Dave Matthews Band is urging fans to push Congress to do more to ensure that U.S. troops coming home traumatized by combat get the help they need.
A petition on the band's Web site has 23,000 signatures so far, singer Dave Matthews said in an interview aired Sunday on ABC's "This Week."
The Pentagon and Congress are reviewing possible changes to the military's much-criticized mental health system. A task force last month found that more than one-third of troops and veterans suffer from problems such as traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder, and it urged stronger leadership, more money and greater focus on prevention and screening.
"It just struck me as a profound injustice that someone who had given so much of themselves and clearly showed such a quality of personality that the gratitude we're showing them was basically a dishonorable discharge," Matthews said.
The petition asks Congress to investigate reports that some troops' service-related mental health problems have been misdiagnosed by the military as pre-existing personality disorders.
The effort is nonpartisan, the Grammy-winning musician said. "It's only about how we treat people who have given their, essentially, their lives, put their lives in the hands of our country." "
Reading about some of the horrific injuries and conditions these men and women suffer as a result of serving in the military in hostile and violent situations sometimes makes me lose sleep at night. I think about how there I am, lying (laying?) safe in my bed, the only sounds outside being the traffic (I live close to a busy street) and the occasional airliner flying overhead, and there are thousands of soldiers who are making sure I can continue to do just that for as long as I possibly can, hopefully the rest of my life.
It bothers me...no, it angers me how these incredible people, my heroes, are treated as an afterthought in many ways. Some lose jobs, their families break up, the don't have a lot of money or insurance or support. Some may lose their eyesight, a limb, or worse, and yet our country, the very one they defend, turns its back on these individuals in many ways. It's an injustice that they can't get proper medical care.
I hope you all will sign this petition and show your support. While most of us don't believe in war and violence, there's no question that those who do defend us are doing so with honor, with courage, with dignity, and should be treated with such in return. No matter what one's personal views are on the subject, we are all human beings and deserve a chance at a better life, and better healthcare.

Book Description
The Lori Foster Bookjunkys has been hard at work doing a "troop project". Through generous donations and the organizational finesse of Laurie Damron, fun, heartwarming, and sometimes necessary items are bought and shipped to our beloved troops. This cookbook is their way of further contributing to the cause. Over 90 authors, and a handful of dedicated readers, have offered up their favorite recipes for this publication, and all their proceeds will go toward the "troop project".
***Authors Lori Foster and Dianne Castell organized a cookbook with recipes from over 90 of your favorite authors and some from familiar readers and family. The book, titled "THE WRITE INGREDIENTS: Recipes from Your Favorite Authors," will be published by Samhain and will be available at the June 2007 event, and online at Lori's site, and at Samhain. To order from Amazon, go here, or to order from Samhain, go here.***
I'm hoping to get at least two copies, and hopefully will get it signed by as many authors as possible. What a cool thing to do.

...by sending Valentines :)
Here is a small request on behalf of author Lori Foster: if you would like to send Valentine cards and or packages, here is a list of soldiers to choose from. Feel free to pick a name or names and do what you would like. So far, 5 schools in Ohio are planning on sending out cards. Packages are not necessary; that is only if you want to (check out Lori's site for more info). The cards would be nice, or maybe you have kids who want to make them a valentine. Just imagine the smiles on their faces to know that someone is thinking of them.
***Postage for cards is the same as domestic mail: $0.39 for 1 oounce, $0.63 for 2 ounces***

Also, got this little poll off of Sylvia Day's blog:

Do you like to keep your books nearby?

Yes, the closer the better. I have them on the nightstand, and all of them are in my bedroom. I love to re-read, and have them nearby.

Do you collect them?

Series that I love, yes. Or from a favorite author like Brockmann or Kleypas.

Pile, stack, shelve, hoard them?

All of the above. Eventually a book lover will run out of room.

Or do you get rid of them, send them back to the library, give them away, once you've read them?

Sadly I've given very few of them away, hence the lack of space. I can't help it, I'm very possessive of them.

Sending cards to the troops
I got this from my good friend Cryna, and thought it might be nice to share. I think you can be from any part of the world and still show your support if you wish to.

Something cool that Xerox is doing If you go to this web site, http://www.letssaythanks.com/ , you can pick out a thank you card and Xerox will print it and it will be sent to a soldier that is currently serving in Iraq. You can't pick out who gets it, but it will go to some member of the armed services. How AMAZING it would be if we could get everyone we know to send one!!!
This is a great site.
Please send a card.
