Release Day & upcoming signings: A Lot Like Love by Julie James

The FBI wants her cooperation.

As the daughter of a billionaire and the owner of the city’s top wine store, Jordan Rhodes is invited to the most exclusive parties in Chicago. But there’s only one party the FBI wants to crash: the charity fundraiser of a famous restaurateur, who also happens to launder money for the mob. In exchange for her brother’s release from prison, Jordan is going to be there—with a date supplied by the Bureau.

Agent McCall just wants her.

As the top undercover agent in Chicago, Nick McCall has one rule: never get personal. This “date” with Jordan Rhodes is merely an assignment—one they’re both determined to pull off even if they can’t be together for five minutes before the sarcasm and sparks begin to fly. But when Nick’s investigation is compromised, he and Jordan have no choice but to pretend they’re a couple, and what starts out as a simple assignment begins to feel a lot like something more. . .

Booksigning: meeting debut mystery writer Joelle Charbonneau

Well this weekend I got to do something fun: meet a debut author from Chicago. Her name is Joelle Charbonneau, and she writes mysteries. Her first book, SKATING AROUND THE LAW, is set in a small town, and of course, around a roller rink. It sounds like a really fun series.

Joelle actually had this signing at a roller rink, which was a cool idea considering the setting of the book. It was fun for me since it was close by, and also because I saw many people I knew who attended the signing. 1 person bought 15 copies! Nothing like the support of family and friends to make an event successful.

And before you ask, no, I did not get out on there on skates. I am uncoordinated on the best of days, but I wasn't feeling too good on Saturday. But many people were there, enjoying themselves. It looked like a lot of fun.

I'm really looking forward to sitting down one day soon with this book and enjoying a good mystery, which admittedly I don't read too often these days. Sounds like a refreshing change of pace. Joelle, is was so lovely meeting you :)

Chicago event alert: 7th Annual Young Adult Literature Conference
Once again I have to give thanks for how lucky I am to live where I live. We tend to get a lot of amazing authors coming to the area, and I recently learned about this event. I don't know if I'll be attending, but perhaps I can try to go to any booksignings that might be open to the public.

Is there anyone coming to Chicago or already in the area planning to attend?

Another awesome Chloe Neill signing
Once again I would like to thank the booksigning gods for being fortunate to live in an area where I can attend these awesome signings. The cool and always interesting Chloe Neill was in Wisconsin this past weekend, and I definitely made it a point of going to at least one of them.

Isn't Chloe just the cutest thing?

Chloe brought the THB, but unfortunately he wasn't talking. Thought maybe we could bribe him for some dirt, but he held strong. Not that we really tried very hard. I'm sure it's overwhelming to be surrounded by a bunch of (mostly) women gushing over the superior skills of Ethan and the smokin' hotness of Catcher. Not that THB has anything to worry about *g*

And though she didn't dish much dirt about the Chicagoland Vampires, Chloe did give us interesting tidbits about how she writes and reassuring us again that she's contacted for 3 more books, for a total of 7! So thrilled to hear this.

Me & Chloe

(I'm always a blur LOL)

For those of you who don't know, Chloe also writes a YA paranormal series called "The Dark Elite", and Hexbound, book 2 is scheduled for a January 2011 release.

Thank you Chloe, for a fun booksigning, and I hope that one day we can get you to a signing in Chicago, where you belong!

Authors in Motion: meeting Gena, Rachel, Carla, Susan & Emilie
I don't know about you, but I had an absolutely great weekend (and believe me, these are more rare than you'd think LOL). It started out Friday evening, where there was a picnic for the Network of Strength which supports breast cancer. It was a beautiful day, not too hot, and I won a prize - 2 tickets to the Chicago Museum of Science & Industry plus 2 tickets for the Omni-Max theatre. I love stuff like that. Now I just need to find someone to go with me :)

Emilie, Susan, Carla, Rachel & Gena

at the KMart in Bloomingdale, IL

Then Saturday was the Authors in Motion bus tour, which brought the fabulous Gena Showalter, Rachel Vincent, Carla Neggers, Susan Mallery and Emilie Richards to a city near me (actually quite a few, but I only attended one signing).

Emilie Richards

Susan Mallery

Carla Neggers

Rachel Vincent

Gena Showalter

All the ladies were just lovely, very friendly and sweet. I got a book from each of them, though Rachel didn't have the first book in either of her two series, but I made do with the 2nd in her young adult series LOL. I hope those of you in the Chicagoland/Wisconsin/Indiana area got a chance to stop by and meet these fabulous authors. And who knows, after chatting with them, we might see some of them at the Lori Foster get-together in 2011!

After leaving the signing, I hit a few bookstores, then my night was topped off by a visit to the Cheesecake Factory with one of my good pals. She had to work on Saturday and we decided to go splurge on some excellent food.

I got my usual:

Chicken Madeira

Godiva Chocolate Cheesecake

Actually I went for the Red Velvet Cheesecake but I took it to go, and the presentation isn't quite as impressive when it's already boxed up.

So, how was your weekend?

Meeting YA author Simone Elkeles
This past Saturday I had the opportunity to meet my favorite YA author, Simone Elkeles. For those of you who may not know, she wrote the amazing "Perfect Chemistry", as well as another YA favorite of mine, "Leaving Paradise". Her latest book, which I finished moments before the signing (it's amazing!), is my current favorite of her's.

Here are just a few of her releases. I've read 3 of her books so far, and I highly recommend each of them.

The crowd wasn't very big, but Simone took her time with each person, especially the teenage girls, and I was impressed with her patience and enthusiasm.

Simone and me (isn't she adorable?)

I think other than the parents, I was the only adult, but I didn't mind. I could hear comments from parents praising the book and how it got their teen reading, and from school teachers who said that "Perfect Chemistry" was still the top-read book in their school. There were also several librarians there as well. It's pretty cool to hear adults being so positive about these books. They certainly didn't have this kind of reading material when I was a teen.

Here are Alex (Alexander F. Rodriguez) and Carlos ( Giancarlo Vidrio) from Simone's Perfect Chemistry trilogy. I just had to get a poster of these 2 young hotties ;)

I got to chat for a few moments with Simone about the books, and let her know how much I enjoyed them, and that it was another adult and fellow reader - Christine - who brought her books to my attention. Christine, hon, I truly appreciate it! I am such a huge fan, and I have you to thank for that :)

One of her characters in "Rules of Attraction" is a young gay man named Tuck, and I was curious to know whether or not she would be writing a gay YA story. It appeared the thought hadn't crossed her mind, but you just never know, right?

Anyway, it was quite a pleasure meeting Simone. She was lively and funny and totally focused on whoever was standing in front of her. I'm sure she understood how it is for some teens to be shy and uncomfortable, and Simone was wonderful with each person.

Funny sidenote: while standing in line I noticed this guy there who looked very familiar. It turned out to be Simone's husband, but what was funny was that I actually knew him from the building where I work! So he noticed me and came over after I had my books signed and asked me if I worked for --- and we got to talking. Of course I tried to hit him up for some future books LOL.

Srsly, a GREAT day. And to make it even better is that Simone will be at the Chicago Spring Fling this upcoming Saturday. April is shaping out to be an awesome booksigning month.

If you ever get the chance to meet Simone, please do. She is truly amazing :)

So that was my weekend. How was yours?

Chicago Signing: Beth Kery, Shiloh Walker, Julie James & Joss Ware

Here's the first thing you see when you walk through the doors of the Barnes & Noble, located in Chicago on Webster. So pretty.....

Here's Beth Kery, author of one of my top favorite erotic romances of all time: Wicked Burn. She's so sweet, and much prettier than my blurry photo-taking skills would indicate. In my defense, I was using my phone to take the pictures, and it's not the best quality. But take my word for it, Beth is adorable.

I didn't notice this at the time I took the picture, but have to laugh at the sign above Julie James and Joss Ware: Bargain-priced top selections. Yeah, I'd have to agree - they are a bargain *g*

And here she is, the object of my "obsessive" stalking: Shiloh Walker! Ain't she just the cutest thing ever???? And she left me the sweetest message in my copy of Broken, which I would have taken a picture of to show you, but I ended up leaving my books in someone else's car and don't have them back yet, but they are not far from me, so if I get them back soon, I'll be sure to take a picture and show you all. She says the nicest things LOL.

It was a most fun Saturday, and I also got to meet some Twitter friends, like Colleen. Julie's adorable son Jackson was there, but I missed the opportunity to meet the brilliant Mr. James. Perhaps another time. I also missed seeing my pal Dani again. I got there around 3:30 and stayed the whole time. I figured if I'm going to drive into the city I'm going to make the most of it.

After the signing, we headed across the street to the Webster Wine Bar. (I did take a picture, but it was so dark in there it's hard to see after I downloaded it). I talked to Julie a little bit about her next book - her heroine owns a wine store and Julie did extensive, um, research for the book, which has now prompted me to find out more about wine. I never really cared all that much before, but it turns out Illinois has some decent wineries, plus I checked online and there are a gazillion wine-tasting events around the city and suburbs, some of them even free. So I think I'll be brushing up on my wine knowledge.

Shiloh's hubby was also in attendance. Gotta give the guy credit for listening to our chatter. He didn't talk much but you can just tell he's got some interesting thoughts and opinions, judging but the look on his face LOL. I'm sure being married to an author, he's heard it all.

Got exciting news from Joss: she's working on book #4! I won't give anything away, but I'm thrilled to pieces. It's going to also reveal a lot about another character who will be getting a story later on, and I can't wait for his story. It's going to be a doozy, I'm sure. And in Colleen Gleason news, she's got a new vampire series she's working on, so I'm tres excited about that. Keep those books coming, Joss/Colleen!

In other news, I have a interview with Beth to post, which will probably go up sometime this week. I'm looking forward to that. She was very patient with me, as I tend to ask really confusing questions, but I think we worked it all out.

So as you can see, I had a GREAT time. These ladies are 4 of my favorite authors, all auto-buys for me. And I'm looking forward to seeing them again later in the year for other signings. There's the Chicago Spring Fling, which I'll be attending, as well as the Lori Foster get-together, and RWA. It's going to be a fabulous year :)

Booksigning: Chloe Neill in Wisconsin
In case you haven't been around my blog here in the last week or so, I had finally decided to attend the Chloe Neill signing in Wisconsin this past weekend. Once I figured out where it was, it was only about a 45-minute drive from home, so despite the icky weather, I was determined to go.

In fact, I ended up attending both signings, and met some really cool people there too. That's one of the fun things about attending these events.

The first signing, at the Barnes & Noble in Racine, was already in progress by the time I got there. Yes, I had gotten there about an hour early, but I went to go eat and got to the store right at 1pm.

Chloe spent some time talking, then took questions. I love this part, and even felt comfortable enough to ask a question of my own: what type of music did she listen to while writing the Chicago vampires (Nine Inch Nails, and she also watched a lot of Bones & NCIS). She then signed books and chatted with us. Very informal, and we learned that she has not been invited to Chicago by any of the bookstores. Gasp! Well that is something I plan on working on. Another fan, who lives not to far from me, is intending to contact our local Barnes & Noble to set up a signing here. I think that should be mandatory!

Originally I hadn't intended to go to the 2nd booksigning in Greenfield, but then I found out from the store that it was only about 20 miles away and very easy to get to, so of course I decided it would be worth it. I headed over to the mall, and since I had time, grabbed something to eat and scoped out the nearby Borders. Then I headed over to the B&N, where the setting was a little more intimate, and it was even more fun because we got to sit down and chat and just enjoy spending time as a group. Krista, the one who lives not to far away, is another fan, and she gave me some great recs.

We also learned more about Chloe and the series that I didn't know about, such as:

* Chloe Neill is a pen name.

* Ethan was inspired by David Beckham. Catcher by Paul Walker (yum). And Chloe had Zoey Deschanel in mind for Merit, as well as Jill Flint from the USA Network show "Royal Pains"

* She listened to "Alone" off the Glee soundtrack, like, A LOT, as well as the song "Possiblity" from the New Moon soundtrack and the band Muse. She mentioned Imogen Heap as well.

* She's read and enjoyed the books of Sherrilyn Kenyon, J.R. Ward and Kim Harrison

* Chloe also reads a lot of travel logs and nonfiction by A. J. Jacobs

* She raves about writer Neil Gaiman

* Chloe chose Chicago for her vampire series because New York, L.A. and New Orleans have been done before, and Chicago has a rich and dark history

* She has 3 books under contract so far for her Dark Elite series (and we hope for more)

* Never say never, but chances are she might not write a stand-alone book. She really likes the character development of a series.

* ...and last but not least, we did not get ANY good gossip on Merit or Ethan! Bummer!

But hey I'm not complaining (much) because I got the chance to meet a favorite new author, and I got my books signed. I also bought the first 2 in the Chicagoland Vampire series that I also had signed and need to figure out what kind of contest I'm going to have. Hmmm....

Now for those of you who would love to meet Chloe and want her to come to your hometown, one thing that might be helpful is to contact your local bookstore(s) and request that they invite her in for a signing. I know she's very receptive to the idea, so give it a try. Let them know you'd love to have a favorite author come to their store. Really, it's so easy, and it's a win/win situation: the reader gets to meet a fun and interesting person, the writer gets their name out there and sells some books, and the booksellers are making a profit without really having to spend much money to promote said author. And if the booksellers are savvy, they've figured out that readers, especially romance readers, buy in bulk. It's very unlikely that we stop at one (see previous post about my 16-book shopping spree!

Some exciting news:

Chloe Neill night be coming back to the area in July, when the 3rd Chicagoland Vampire book is released! I've already marked it down on my calendar to attend. And just maybe she'll have a signing in the Windy City!

So far Chloe doesn't have any plans to attend the conferences throughout the year, but I'm hoping she'll consider attending the Lori Foster/Dianne Castell gathering in June. Definitely an inexpensive and fun way to interact with readers and other authors. We'll see just how persuasive I can be *g*

I apologize for the poor quality of the pictures. I used my phone, which doesn't take the best pictures but it's quick and easy and fun to play with and allowed me to take notes and Google some of what Chloe was talking about. I've bookmarked some new tunes and websites to check out, based on some of her comments.

A huge "thank you" to Chloe for doing the signing so close to where I live, and it was a pleasure to listen to her talk about books and answer our questions. It makes me even more impatient for the next book!

Any booksignings in your future?

Thanx for the recs & a Chloe Neill booksigning

First off, thank YOU for all the amazing recs for the hot 'n sexy m/m romance stories I was looking for. For those who don't know, "The Assignment" by Evangeline Anderson was my first m/m romance, and it set the tone for the type of stories that appealed to me the most, specifically the heterosexual angle. It's not that I don't appreciate or want to read about two gay men falling in love, because I have read some wonderful stories along those lines and enjoyed them very much, it's just that at this particular time, I wanted the more forbidden aspect. Yes you've discovered one of my dirty girl secrets *g*

Photobucket

In about an hour or so, I'll be heading up north - Racine, Wisconsin to be specific - for the Chloe Neill booksigning. I'm soooo excited! I don't know if anyone else is going, but I'd love to meet you if you are :) A HUGE shout-out to Mandi from Smexy Books for having talked up Chloe's books and having her as a guest at the Smexy blog. Mandi is among one of my most favorite book pimps, and I appreciate how she brings us the latest and greatest. I may not love the Killers like she does (I'm more a Nickelback kinda girl) but that doesn't mean she doesn't have fabulous taste in books *g*

I'll do my best to take and perhaps tweet pictures, and if I learn any good dirt, I'll post it here. Enjoy your day, lovelies :)

SEP!
Photobucket

Anderson's Bookstore

Naperville, IL

Saturday, February 7th, was a gorgeous day in northern Illinois. The temps were in the 50's, the sun was shining brightly, and Susan Elizabeth Phillips was having a booksigning.

This time I was going it alone, as my normal booksigning pals - Shannon & Michelle - couldn't make it, which was a total bummer. I love hanging out with them and sharing my excitement. Anyway, it was about a 30-minute drive for me, followed by the incredibly fun (not) challenge of finding a parking spot. I love downtown Naperville; it's quaint and full of great shops, but a bitch to find parking. (I keenly remember this from the Josh Bernstein signing). Then some very nice lady saw me driving around and told me she was leaving and directed me to her car. Gotta love people like that (Sadly I am not one of them).
It was just a short walk from my car, and once I got there, I ran into someone I didn't think would be there, the infamous author stalker, Mary. Now I had someone to hang with. And if you've never met Mary, then you haven't heard her numerous stories, including the one about the kidnapped sock. It was hilarious.

Photobucket

Mary!

Well, if there's one thing to be said about Mary, is that she's not easily forgotten. Whereas I blend into the woodwork quite easily, Mary tends to make a lasting impression on writers and readers alike. It's a cool trait to have. In fact Cathie Linz was also at the signing - she knows Mary well - and I got a picture of the two of them, but for some reason I couldn't get it to upload. I'll have to try again and update this post when I do.

Photobucket

The lady of the hour: SEP

I also saw author Tracey Devlyn at the signing, which was pretty cool. She's a part of Lori Foster's Yahoo group, so I knew she'd be there, but didn't know if I'd get a chance to see her with everything going on. She's very nice, and I wish we could have had more of a chance to chat, and see what she's up to writing-wise. But she said she's going to Lori Foster's/Dianne Castell's get-together in June, so hopefully we can catch up.

Photobucket

anyone who's read the Stars books knows about this phrase *g*

The signing went very smoothly. Susan has an agenda that she loosely follows, so it's relaxed, fun, and comfortable. We meet some of her friends and other authors. She introduced her husband Bill and her son youngest Zach (very cute, btw). And his wife. The signing was being streamed live via webcam, which was pretty cool. She has a trivia contest to guess her books, and that was fun, considering I'm still reading them (in the middle of "Natural Born Charmer"). And some of you might already know (I didn't) that her son Zach wrote the Jack Patriot songs from "Natural Born Charmer". In fact both him and his wife have had CD's published. I love stuff like that.

Photobucket

SEP and her hubby Bill (aka fan photographer)

It came as no surprise that Susan is a very nice person and also very funny. She did clear the air about one burning question some readers had about whether or not she would get a Facebook page: No, nope, her message board is more than enough, thank you very much. I get that. She only writes one book every 18-24 months as it is.

Photobucket

SEP & me

I was not one bit nervous meeting Susan, which is unusual for me. But having become a fan late in the game, I think that helped in preventing me from acting like a total dork. I felt really comfortable talking to her. She just has that way about her where you feel very calm in her presence. I brought all the Stars books to sign, plus I bought the new one, but they asked if we'd only have 3 books out to have Susan sign, and later we could have the rest of them signed, after everyone got through the line. Mary & I went over to Lou Malnati's after we got through the line and by that time I'm sure everyone had cleared out. I didn't bother to go back to find out for sure though. That's okay - I'm sure there will be another signing someday :)

So that was my day. Pretty freakin' awesome, if you ask me.

SEP, booksignings, blogging, and D.C. (again)
Photobucket

Saturday, February 7 at 2:00 p.m.

Tomorrow I'm going to be meeting Susan Elizabeth Phillips for the first time, and I cannot wait! I still haven't read all her books, and I have one left of the Chicago Stars series, but that's okay. I'm going to bring them all with me and see what happens. Everyone says how nice and funny she is, so I'm really looking forward to meeting her, and possibly some fellow bloggers. I hope to have pictures to post sometime soon.
***
But as you can see I'm heading off to D.C. once again, which I really enjoy, but it cuts into my blogging time - I don't bring my laptop with me and while I'm at work, I guess I should make an attempt to actually get some work done. (Crazy notion). Plus, the awesome Kati lives there so I'd love to get the chance to hang with her and talk books, m/m action, and RWA. And, thanx to Facebook, I'm going to be catching up with a friend from high school that I haven't seen in years, and I'm really excited about that. It's funny how much of a small world it is when you have
***
In other news, Michelle Buonfiglio recently went back to her roots and is now back at Romance Buy the Book, a more user-friendly blog, and I think a lot of people are glad to have her "back". MyLifetime was completely awesome in many ways, but the blogging format was a bit of a nightmare to navigate. Anyway, it's nice to be back to basics again, and if you get a chance, stop by and say "hey". Very cool news: Suzanne Brockmann will be at RBTB on Friday, February 13th - and you know I'm beyond thrilled at this news.

So, have a fabulous weekend!!!!!

Hangin' with Colleen Gleason
I found out a few weeks ago that Colleen Gleason (author of the fab Gardella series) was going to be at Borders for an informal booksigning on Friday, August 15th, not too far from my house, and of course I just had to go. I invited pal Michelle Buonfiglio, who recently moved to the area, and of course she was thrilled to get the opportunity to hang out with me, because you know, who wouldn't?

Michelle and I decided to meet not far from her house since she's still not too familiar with the area, so while I was waiting for her, I sat outside reading book 4, "When Twilight Burns", which is soooo, soooo good. Anywayz, I'm getting right to the yummy goodness of Victoria rolling around on the ground, gettin' dirty with...nah, I won't spoil it for ya...when Michelle scares the ever-living hell out of me as she beeps to get my attention. The book almost went flying but thank God I had the presence of mind to hold on to it for dear life. Who cares about my cell phone as long as the book survives. Disaster avoided. We were on our way.

And, it turns out DIK chick Shannon is also a local girl, so we made plans to meet up at one of my absolute favorite places, the Cheesecake Factory, before the signing. Shannon beat us there, and I got her text as we were waiting in line for a table. I knew from a picture at her blog what she looked like, yet then she comes along with this cute, short hairstyle that made me all jealous since I'm ready to hack off all my hair myself. Moving on. I did have a great time eating and laughing and talking with her and Michelle, and learned about a lot more books that I need to get. Thanx to Shannon, I'm ready to dip my toes in the urban fantasy pool even more deeply than I had before.

Photobucket

Colleen and me

(Note: gosh do I look stoned or what??? This is why I don't like getting my picture taken)

We got to Borders a bit late, but since it was not an official signing, it was all good. We met Colleen's good friend Kelly, who lives in the area, and Kristan (?), who came all the way down from Wisconsin. It was so relaxing just to sit down and talk about books. We talked about some of our faves like JD Robb and Judith McNaught, and what ongoing series (other than Colleen's) we were reading. Both Michelle and Colleen got me to consider Eloisa James' latest series (starting with "The Desperate Duchess") even though EJ is a hit or miss author for me. Still, I am getting the first 3 books in the series.

Colleen also mentioned that she would like to continue the Gardella series, so you just never know what may happen after book 5, "As Shadows Fade", which has another gorgeous cover, btw. I'm all for more Gardellas. And Venators.

Like I mentioned earlier, Shannon intrigued me with her comments on urban fantasy, especially her thoughts on Kim Harrison's series, so I picked up "Dead Witch Walking". And I grabbed my second ever SEP book, "It Had to Be You", because I just can't start in the middle of that series . I also decided to give Colette Gale's "Unmasqued" a try, especially after hearing about a new take on the Robin Hood legend. I know I'm not the only one imagining Richard Armitage here.

Colleen and Michelle Buonfiglio

I didn't get a picture of Shannon (I forgot, though Michelle got a group picture so maybe I'll steal it from her if I get a chance) but I do want to bless her for introducing me to Seattle's Best hot chocolate. OMG, it is ambrosia! Creamy, rich, delicious, with white chocolate shavings sprinkled on top. Definitely one of the most heavenly creations known to man. I am forever indebted to her for this discovery.

It was 10:30 and Colleen had to leave since she was driving to Indiana the next day, so we said our good-byes, then Shannon, Michelle and I started making fun of some of the art covers and book titles. You just can't help it - some of them are just hideous. I think we (okay, Michelle) also scared off a bunch of shoppers away from the romance section.

It was a wonderful night, spent with new and existing friends, eating and talking and just having a great time together. And if ever you get the opportunity, I would definitely recommend going to a booksigning. Definitely one of this summer's highlights :)

Starstruck a.k.a. my moment to meet Josh Bernstein
I give up. The computer has defeated me. I am currently at the library, blogging in the public eye, which makes me feel like I am a teenaged girl oogling pictures of my high school crush. Seriously, I am waaay past that stage. At least physically.
So, you wanna hear about the Josh Bernstein booksigning? Why? Cuz you think he's cute? Smart? He makes you laugh? Or maybe you just love history? Well get this: how about all of the above? Yep, this guy has definitely got it goin' on.

"Digging for the Truth", an adventure series on the History channel about some of the greatest historical mysteries, is fun and informative, and as the host, Josh takes us to the pyramids of Egypt to the jungles of Peru. I've only seen the first season of the show, and enjoyed it immensely. Sure Josh is dang cute but the guy has the brains to back it up (not to mention very white teeth).

If he didn't, I don't think he would have held my attention past the first episode...of season 3 (debuts Monday, January 22nd). Seriously though, I've always liked history, and this show actually makes me want to hop on a plane or canoe and explore some of the most fascinating and remote areas in the world. Doesn't stuff like that get you all excited? I know I totally get into it. The more I learn, the more I want to know. The only thing(s) holding me back are an unlimited supply of cash and my fear of not getting a daily shower.
So anywayz, I knew awhile ago that Josh was going to be in town to do a booksigning, so I asked my co-worker Karen if she'd like to attend because I know she liked history and being much older than me, I figured she'd keep me from acting like a giggling fool. I had already purchased a copy of his book (see left sidebar) and had an edition of Experience Life, which you can only get if you have a membership to the Lifetime Fitness healthclub. (Don't ask me when the last time I was there). The signing was at 7pm, and I picked Karen up at her house around 5:45. Despite rush hour and the distance, we still made it there about 6:20. The chairs for the signing were completely filled, so we manuveured our way to a clearing near the info desk at the bookstore, and chatted with others who were there for the signing.
At about 7:05, the man himself (sigh!) makes an appearance. Let me just say that Josh has an interesting way of dressing. Not outlandishly, but not with what I'd call a whole lot of concern to fashion sense. He had on an orange-ish/brownish plaid shirt with a dark shimmery blue blazer, I guess almost cordoroy in appearance. (I wasn't able to download pictures - I promise in the next few days I will try to get some posted from the event, sans moi). So while we oohed and aahed over the fact he'd finally arrived, we had to wait about 15 minutes because a local t.v. station wanted an interview. So patiently we waited. Karen and I stationed ourselves in clear view of him - and yeah, he's cuter in real life. Just in case anyone had any doubt.
And just as funny. Very personable, and patient, as I'm sure he answers the same questions at least 55 times a day. He told amusing anecdotes about the show, especially those involving his numerous bumps and bruises - from anaphylactic shock to dysentery - his job is not all glamour and glory. He also shares moments from his relationship with archeaologist Dr. Zahi Hawass, a very passionate and intense man who has appeared on several episodes of "Digging for the Truth". He told us about going to a Borders in downtown Chicago, asking to signing copies of his own book and being initially treated like he just got out of juvenile detention and was there to de-face their property, which he found amusing. That's probably one of the things I liked best about him: how down-to-earth he is. No entourage, no whining, no fashionably late appearance. He has such an enthusiasm for people, and for what he does, that it's extremely contagious.
Finally the moment of truth: #48 in line. Karen, who had originally decided not to buy a book, gets one before I'm at the front of the line and instead of getting a new number, piggybacks on mine. Okay, no problem. I let her go ahead of me, so she got her chance to talk to him. All I had asked her to do was to take one picture of him and him as he's signing my book. You'd think as I handed him my book that it would mean her turn was over. Well, if you think that and I think that, the only person who didn't know was Karen. She kept asking him questions, completely forgetting to take my picture. He said a few words to me, was impressed that I had that magazine (I think it was published in 2005 or early 2006) and then it was over.

Did I get a chance to ask a question? No. Then as I said good-bye, Karen's all "okay, let's go". Let's go???? You stupid effing bitch, I'm thinking loudly to myself. I don't even have my coat on, you didn't take a picture of me (in fact the lady who was ahead of us, a complete stranger, mind you, took my picture while Karen was stealing my time) , you would have never known about the booksigning, and now YOU are ready to go? It took God and a whole hell of a lot of angels to prevent a murder that night, let me tell you. But did I say anything? No. Not then. I was so furious with her that I absolutely could not deal with it, especially since I was driving and was so beyond tempted to leave her there. She didn't get it until the next day, and yeah, she apologized, but I don't know that it was sincere. She should still be groveling as far as I'm concerned. See, Karen's like that. It's about her. No one else. All I wanted was the chance to ask one question. Just one. I had a few in mind and figured one of them would pop into my head. Too bad I don't know which one would have won. So yeah, I was bitter. REDRUM, REDRUM kinda bitter. But what could I have done? Wrestled her to the ground? Told her to shut the eff up and give someone else a chance? Yeah, that woulda gone over well. I know when to hold 'em, and when to fold 'em, and lets just say she's lucky I am grace under pressure.
However, you gotta let it go sometime, and all in all, it was a really fun night, and I truly enjoyed myself because the energy level was so high and people were friendly and accommodating. It wasn't overly crowded, and the time just flew by. Karen is still my friend, but like any adult who takes the higher road, I just choose to hate her from time to time now *g* And I would highly recommend going to such an event to anyone who's ever wondered about it. Seriously, I hope you don't take away that I had a bad experience. 95% of the night was great. I have a new appreciation for someone who is in the public eye for something other than scandal or gossip or whatever.

So there you have it. Like I said, I'll try and post some pictures from the event because they really do give you more of a feel for what kind of person he is, and not just as someone on t.v. I like him even more now. And did I mention how dang adorable that boy is? Well, I'm saying it now. It's like, a fact.
Have you ever met anyone famous?
Who would you like to meet (author, actor, performer)?
Has anyone ever left you starstruck?
