The surreal life of a reader on the internet
The internet is truly an amazing place. I'm fairly new to it, probably only really started using it on a regular basis about five years ago. I started out slowly, gradually joining Yahoo groups and slowly allowing myself out of the lurk mode. In that time, I've met many wonderful friends from sites that I frequented because of common interests. Some I've even met in person due to events nearby or that I've traveled to.

But even now, I can't get over how bizarre it is to know people that I might never have met if it hadn't been for the internet. Visiting some of the writer loops, I've exchanged emails with other fans and also with some of my favorite authors. It's strange and wonderful and a lot of fun, yet sometimes I wonder how it happened. How could I, someone shy and nervous around most new people I meet, be reading and reviewing books for amazing writers like Alison Kent and Lucy Monroe and getting interviews with Lori Foster, LuAnn McLane, Karen Kelley and Dianne Castell and meeting amazing authors like Shiloh Walker and Lora Leigh of scorching Ellora's Cave books? I have no clue how it happened, but I'm not about to let it worry me too much - I'm having way too much fun!

So as a happy reader, I want to raise a toast to the internet and say how wonderful my experience has been so far. Two of the groups I frequent often are Lori Foster's and the Scamps and Vamps. So in addition to those I've already mentioned, I get my daily dose of hotties as well as tons of other useful links thanx to a truly great friend and special person (Judy F); non-stop laughter and inspiration from the witty and shocking comments of our dear Krispy Kreme addict (Joni); have been amazed by the knowledge of trivia and song-of-the-day answers from an informed poster who has been so lucky to meet some wonderful country performers of which I'm envious (Jana); I've been mothered by a sweet and fiesty blonde warrior who has the most generous heart and spirit you will find anywhere (Laurie); get warm-hearted and sweet emails from a wonderful Canadian friend who never fails to share her friendship and caring for others (Cryna); have laughed and sighed in exasperation and the bold and naughty teasing of our infamous tormentor (Bad Barb); have been inspired by a strong and caring friend who has her own health challenges but never fails to cheer and be there to lend a kind word when others are going through their own difficult times (Shari); been entertained by a clever, witty member of royalty who gets the most unusual and amusing book recommendations yet has no idea why (sure...) and who is a staunch supporter to those misunderstood Fiends (LadyB); our monthly angel who posts the birthday list so we can celebrate (Loretta) and have gotten to know other special people who share their lives at the groups and never fail to be there when I need it most: Jodi, Tee, Barb V, Patti, Lois, Barb S, Jamie, Lisa F, Mary F, Lori M, Jane, Mark, Chad, Kelley, Jennifer Y, Heather, Lori T, Niny, Janice M. Rosemary, Michelle, Jean, Kati, Alane, Kathleen, Ann, Rosie, Emma, Tami, Erin, Jenny, and I just know I'm forgetting some important names, but I hope they know who they are - great friends who've enriched my life. Special mention to a dear friend who is no longer with us: Judy Schlueter - a classy lady who inspired us all. Salut!

An Interview with erotic romance author Susan Lyons
This interview was originally posted February 20, 2006, but due to the infamous re-design, was lost in the transition. I have managed to re-create it as closely as I could to the original (minus the various links I used the first time around). Susan was extremely patient and wonderful to answer all my questions. I really appreciate the time she took with me :)

**************************
was lucky enough to "meet" Susan Lyons at a Writerspace chat for the Kensington Aphrodisia authors. I was intrigued by the premise to her debut novel "Champagne Rules" and thought it would be fun to interview her. She said yes, and the following is the result of my...um...pestering. Thank you, Susan, for taking the time to do this!

SA: It appears you've had many other careers and studied many different fields before finding your niche as a writer. I must say I'm really impressed by your wide range of interests. Do you use that knowledge in your stories, or fell that it has contributed to your experience as a writer?

SL: How flattering to say "wide range of interests", rather than "it sure took you long enough to figured out what you wanted to do"! Yes, I've studied psychology and sociology and anthropology, and those do influence my writing, but more in a subconscious than conscious way. And I studied law because I care about justice and values, and yes, those themes are reflected in my writing too. What it really comes down to is, people fascinate me. Each human being is so amazing. I especially love writing about people at transition points in their lives, where their beliefs and values are challenged and they have to figure out where to go from here.
SA: How do you feel about writing for such an erotic line as Aphrodisia? Do you have any boundaries you are not willing to cross in your writing? Have you felt pressured to crank up the heat beyond what you prefer?

SL: Aphrodisia is a blast. The authors are wonderful women, the stories are diverse and the editors aren't telling us what to do. My brand of erotic romance is definitely "lite" compared to what some of the others write, and it has a fun, chick lit element, as well as dealing with some significant conflicts and emotional issues. As for boundaries - as a writer, I don't see myself writing paranormal or BDSM (heck, I even had to look up what that meant, so it's obviously not "me" - and for other innocents who don't know, it's bondage, discipline/domination and sado-masochism). I'm not putting these things down and I know lots of readers love them, but they're not my, or my characters', idea of sexual fun.

SA: You reside in a very beautiful place on earth - Vancouver, Canada. Do you think it has been easier or more difficult getting published being outside of the U.S.? Or in today's various markets - such as many of the ebook publishers - do you think it's a moot point?

SL: I think geography is making less and less of a difference. Kensington certainly publishes a number of authors from British Columbia, and I've heard editors say that the Pacific Northwest has more than its fair share of great writers. I had definitely heard that Canadian settings and heroes were hard to sell (people think we live in igloos and are deadly dull, and our heroes are all Dudley Do-Right types of guys). But I'm from Canada and I want to promote our great cities and towns and our wonderful people, so I've almost always written Canadian settings. And I've never heard an editor complain. My firist 4 books are set in Vancouver and Kensington doesn't seem to have any problem with that.

SA: The necessity of promoting your work: how do you feel about this side of the business? Are you able to spend much time attending chats and going to conventions? What do you have planned for 2006? What's your next work?

SL: I notice you say necessity. Some authors would disagree, but I'm with you. Today, it's expected that an author will help promote her work. I still think the best thing I can do for my writing career is get great books out into the world as frequently as I can, so that's where I devote the majority of my energy. But I do keep my website updated ( www.susanlyons.ca ) and run a monthly contest. I send promo items to romance-friendly bookstores. The Aphrodisia Authors have a blog (www.theaphrodisiaauthors.blogspot.com) and I participate in chats whenever I can. This year I'm speaking at the Writers Weekend conference in Seattle in June, I'm attending RWA National in Atlanta in July (my first literacy signing!) and I'm considering proposing a couple of workshops for the Emerald City conference in September. (Note: I just found info for October 2006 so since I wasn't sure if it was the same event, I didn't post the link). I'm also co-authoring an article (with Aphrodisia author P.J. Mellor) for the August issue of RT Bookclub as we both have books coming out then. That's my next book - Hot In Here, where Chinese-Canadian journalist Jenny Yuen and hot firefighter Scott Jackman create the Fantasy Rules.

SA: Romance readers: they are a devoted and passionate group of people. What have they taught you about the business and their support of their favorite writers? Do you believe readers are entitled to certain liberties when it comes to what they expect from a writer?

SL: With my first book out this month, I'm definitely hoping to acquire devoted and passionate readers, and then we'll see what they teach me. As for what readers can expect from me: I'm hoping to entertain each reader with a story that makes her grin, touches her heart, and sends her rushing off to seduce her sweetie.

SA: You grow orchids, though you claim not be an expert. Orchids are such a...sensitive and temperamental plant - do you find it frustrating to cater to the whims of the orchid? They are such beautiful and elusive flowers, some only appearing for just a short time. What makes you so passionate about them? What has this interest taught you, and what types of orchids grow in your region?

SL: I'm looking at my orchids right now and they're saying, "cater to our whims? - you have to be kidding!" No, I'm afraid I don't do that. They get light and water and share desk space with me, and other than that, they're on their own. Right now only one's blooming - with the cutest little pale purple flowers. Why do they appeal to me? For the same reason cats do. It's exactly what you mentioned - they're lovely and elusive and when they do bloom, I feel so rewarded and blessed. They're exotic and arguably the most passionate flower. In Victorian times, women were kept away from orchids because the flowers were considered to be dangerously erotic and seductive. One has to wonder what the guys thought we'd do, when exposed to an orchid! Make sexual demands they couldn't fulfil? Anyhow, I figure orchids help to set the atmosphere for someone whose writing is sensual and sexual. What have I learned from orchids? Patience! As for what orchids grow locally, the only one is a lovely little plant called lady's slipper that's found in the woods in the spring. www.2bnthewild.com/plants/h8.htm
(Note: the Lady Slipper is the state flower of Minnesota, where I, the pest, was born).

SA: Writers are also readers. Which authors do you spend your time reading? What do you like about their stories?

SL: I read lots of different kinds of fiction, but the authors I love the most are the ones who touch me emotionally. Some of those are Some of those are Barbara Samuel, Kristin Hannah, Luanne Rice and Jodi Picoult.

SA: Now for some fun. Who do you consider to be totally "hot"? What music might you be playing as your typing away diligently on your computer?

SL: Denzel Washington! (Note: I am a huge Denzel fan!) Gary Dourdan who plays Warrick Brown on CSI. Robert Redford, especially in his younger days. Morgan Freeman. They all have wonderful eyes and amazing faces, with great charm and expression. And the bodies aren't so bad either! As for music, there's rarely anything playing while I'm writing. For me, it distracts rather than enhances. Occasionally I'll have guitar music or Carlos Nakai flute.

SA: Guilty pleasures - we all have them. What are some of yours? Cheesecake for breakfast? A martini snack at 3PM? A favorite t.v. show you just can't miss?

SL: Bubbles. Champagne's my favorite drink and I keep those mini bottles of Henkel Trocken in the fridge to celebrate writing events. Yesterday, my excuse was, I got covers for Hot In Here (gorgeous!) and learned that Champagne Rules has made a foreign sale, to Germany. (Yay, Susan!) I love bubble baths too, with exotic flower scents like plumeria, white ginger and pikake. And okay, I confess, I watch The OC and Everwood - but no daytime soaps, I swear it.

SA: Thank you Susan, for taking the time to answer my questions. Any last words you'd like to share?

SL: Thanks to you, Stacy. What a fun bunch of questions! I've been traveling the road to publication for a very long time and it's been an amazing journey. I'm not sure I would have made it without the support and wisdom of my RWA colleagues. Now that it's happened, things are really taking off (5 sales in the first 8 months!) and I'm thrilled, and feeling exceptionally lucky and grateful. I'm still on a journey, and the road ahead will definitely have rocky patches, so I'm even more grateful for all the lessons I've learned and the friends I've made along the way. And I'm looking forward to making new friends, both writers and readers, and learning even more lessons.

August 2006 release:
Champagne Rules introduced the Awesome Foursome - four Vancouver gal-pals who are looking for mind-blowing sex. Hot In Here continues their sexy escapades. Journalist Jenny Yuen lands a very steamy assignment: cover a firefighter calendar competition. Her personal favorite? Mr. February. Also known as Scott Jackman. Also, known as hot, hotter, hottest!
Read all about it: the sexy rookie is the man of Jenny's wildest fantasies. And they're going to play by her rules: the Fantasy Rules. No taboos, no holding back. No commitment. The question is, will Jenny be able to stick to her own rules?

To be or not to be United?
This post was not supposed to be about me, but it sure ended up that way. I used to work for an airline (yep, United) and have been fascinated by the business ever since I was on my first flight at the age of 16, which wasn't on United, but it planted a seed in my mind that my high school guidance counselor tried to dig out by the roots, insisting that my intention to work in the travel industry was unrealistic. But when I graduated high school, I did not go on to college to pursue a degree in whatever. Instead, when I was 19, I was hired by UAL after attending a travel school in Minneapolis. It was my first "real" job, and I traveled 560+ miles from home to begin a career in what I still consider to be an exciting if unstable industry. Ironically enough, every position I had with United was actually totally unrelated to the airline. But it didn't dampen my fascination a bit. I love the sound of a jet taking off from the runway. Now, I hear that rumble several times a day, and when I pay attention to it, my mind wanders and I imagine just what type of exotic or mundane location the plane is headed towards. Right this very minute, at 9:17pm, a jet has taken off and flown over my house. Just where could it be headed, I wonder?

Even though I am no longer working for UAL, it still holds a place in my heart, and that's because of the amazing people that hold it together - the employees. United was always a very family-oriented company, and in a time where other businesses, even other airlines, shied away from or just plain prohibited family members from working at the same company, United was the exact opposite, and made no secret of that fact. It wasn't unusual for spouses, children, or siblings to work together in the same department or division. I think that is why so many employees stuck with the company throughout the worst of times, despite paycuts, furloughs, outsourcing, and all the other evils that take place in a troubled organization. In spite it all, I believe the employees were proud of the family-based company they worked for and helped create. It was an amazing place to work.

Times are different now, and there is still the faint beating of the old United's heart, but it's not the company it once was, and probably never will be again. Still, it's in my blood, and I continue to stay in contact with many of the employees even today. Others may think what they will of United, and they are certainly entitled, and I may even agree with some, or a lot, of what people believe, but it will never take away my affection for this company, or maybe I should say my affection for the heart of the company - the employees.

Of course an airline cannot run without several very specialized groups of employees, one of them being the pilots. I was originally going to call this post "A day in the life of a pilot: a unique perspective from a romance writer", but then I realized it had more of myself in it that I originally intended. Yet the inspiration behind this post came from another blog - that of romance writer Susan Grant. Susan has a blog that describes the events in her career as a United Airlines pilot, and knowing what I know, I am even more intrigued by the day-to-day operations. Here is a recent post she wrote about a mandatory part of her job. I hope you find her observations as interesting as I do. I think I might even know who she's talking about, but her secret is safe with me. And remember: fly United. Or at least buy Susan's books.

A fun interview with talented romance writer Lori Foster
This is another interview that I had to re-publish due to some blogger issues. Luckily I still kept a draft of it! Lori was extremely generous with her time and is always supporting wonderful causes. She is passionate about many things, very honest, and loyal, and I think that's what draws people to her, plus she's so down-to-earth and easy to approach. If you ever get a chance to meet her, you'll be glad you did. Here's one chance:

LORI FOSTER & DIANNE CASTELL
READER & WRITER GET-TOGETHER 2006
June 9th & 10th
West Chester, OH

****************
Author Lori Foster is one of my all-time favorite writers. Between her family and her writing, she is one busy woman, but she was gracious enough to take the time to answer some questions I had for her. This is what she had to say:

SA: Lori, you've been a published author for about 10 years, is that correct? It's amazing the number of books you've written in that time! How much has the industry changed since you first started writing and do you think it's gotten easier to become published? What are a few observations you could make about what you've seen over the years?

LF: I've been published since 1996. That's when my first book hit the stands. It is definitely "harder" to get published now, and it was plenty hard enough 10 years ago. But one big difference is that there are a lot more options now. It seems each publishing house has several different imprints or lines, some of them brand new and looking for authors to fill the ranks. Paranormal, erotica and Christian markets have really opened up the playing field. Authors aren't as limited in what will sell. When I started, super sexy books were exclusive to a very few authors. Now it's the biggest market.

SA: If there is one defining attribute about you, it would be your devotion to your family and making them your first priority. I believe it's one of the reasons your readers identify so strongly with you. With a husband and three sons, how do they look upon your writing and how have they influenced how you write and what you write about?

LF: My husband and sons are mega proud. So proud that they sometimes embarrass me with their bragging. They don't read what I write, but they never hesitate to tell others that I write it. They've influenced me in that they have the moral character and personal strengths of the heroes I write. Just as I couldn't write a mean, whiny, self centered or weak hero, I couldn't raise one or marry one either ;-)

My husband is the finest man I know, and my boys all make me very, very proud.

SA: You are very much involved in several causes, most notably troop donations, and the battered women's shelters, which is where proceeds from your reader/writer get-together are going. Your books have been about strong, healthy relationships, and how men respect and admire the women that they love. How do you feel about the impact your stories can have on women who have been in abusive relationships, and is that part of the reason you are so involved in supporting this cause?

LF: I'm involved in supporting a lot of causes because I believe in paying it forward. I've been very blessed, both personally and professionally. Whenever I know I can help, I want to. It's the right thing to do, so I do it. But yeah, it's really rewarding when I receive letters from women (and some men) telling me how my books have encouraged them, or helped them through a bad time. It means a lot to me.

SA: The UFC. It's one of your passions. [Okay, off the record: Pardon my ignorance, but what does it stand for???] What is it about the UFC that interests you and do you plan to write additional stories involving the unique world of wrestling?

LF: The Ultimate Fighting Championships! Awesome stuff. I'm totally addicted to watching and one of these days, I hope to attend a live event. I'm definitely planning on writing more books involving men from the UFC - although for the sake of my stories, I'm renaming it the SBC so that I don't have to worry about accidentally insulting anyone involved in the organization. I know a lot of the rules now, but not all of them, and making a mistake would be really easy.

Anyway, these are primo specimens of manhood! Guys in the best possible physical shape. Against an ordinary guy on the street, they'd dominate in a heartbeat. The fun part? The majority of them aren't bullies. They don't get into street fights. That's not what they're about. You listen to them talk, and (again) most of them are polite and articulate. They're married men with children and they always mention their loved ones first. They seem like gentle souls in a warrior's body. It's a romance writer's dream combination!

My absolute favorite is Randy Couture, because he started out as a wrestler, and he's a very soft spoken, highly intelligent man with a streak of honor a mile wide. The one time I saw him lose, he did it with such great sportsmanship and class that he'll always be my favorite. However, it is not a sport about mere wrestling. This is mixed martial arts. The men who get in the octagon have to know how to kick, punch, wrestle, grapple, submit... they have to know multiple fighting techniques. They're highly trained and very dedicated.

Yes indeed - I'm writing several books that involve the UFC, although the books are not *about* the UFC. It's just that the heroes have a background with the sport, and it's helped to mold them into the men they are. (as a note, PRIDE is another mixed martial arts sport that's just as exciting, but stationed in Japan instead of the states.)

SA: Which authors have influenced you over the years, whether it's because of their writing or for another reason?

LF: Stella Cameron would be #1, because of her generosity, her kindness, her talent...Stella's the whole package ;-) Catherine Coulter and Julie Garwood because of their writing styles - Coulter with dialogue and Garwood with larger than life heroes. Jayne Ann Krentz because of her family oriented settings. Linda Howard because of her super sexy alpha heroes. I've been very fortunate to meet a lot of of incredible authors.

SA: Okay, we know you also have a weakness for action movies. List a few of your favorites and why do you prefer them to the "chick flicks"? Do you have an all-time or current favorite hero/heroine from the movies?

LF: Wesley Snipes of BLADE will always be my favorite. I'm so bummed that
he's done with the series! But Ryan-what's-his-name will make a nice substitute, I think. I also adore the TRANSPORTER movies, with Jason Statham. Chick flicks turn me off because they're usually picking on men, making them out to be shallow, or uncaring, while depicting women as complete twits. Not my thing.

SA: What type of music gets you jazzed? Do you listen to music as you write? Do you have a writing "ritual"?

LF: I like loud, fast music. Kid Rock, Uncle Kracker, Macy Gray, Tom Petty,
Drowning Pool...Yes, I listen to music while writing, and usually I'm eating, and burning candles.

SA: What is a little-known fact about Lori Foster? Do you play an instrument, speak numerous languages, play hockey?

LF: I have NO musical ability, can barely speak English (unless hillbilly counts) and I'm the least athletic person I know. To be honest, I lose count going up and down stairs and often trip myself. Sad, but true. However, I'm a good waterskier. And I'm fairly artistic. I love horror movies, as long as they don't involve slow torture. I'm a rabid republican. I love to help people, but only those people who are trying to help themselves. All in all, I'm a very, very ordinary person.

SA: Does it shock you how popular you are with your readers? Does it still seem surreal when you see your books out on the shelves?

LF: It really does. I'm just me, not someone special. I'm happy, but I didn't need career success for happiness. When I started writing, I never thought about the popularity angle involved. I just wanted to prove myself, to myself, ya know?
But it's a great gig and I'll never tire of it!

An interview with Janice Maynard, Author of "Suite Fantasy"
FYI: This is a re-peat of a previous post originally published in January 2006 that was unfortunately lost when I had my blog re-designed. Luckily I saved a copy of it and re-created it as best as I could. Since this was my first ever author interview, it is near and dear to my heart, especially since Janice is a wonderful person and I was lucky enough to have met her. Here's the interview....

I'm having a quick chat with Janice Maynard, author of the steamy anthology "Suite Fantasy" as well as one of the authors in the anthology "Wildest Dreams" with LuAnn McLane and Morgan Leigh.

SA: Do you have personal goals in your writing? (example: writing a non-fiction book)

Janice: My goals have changed as I go along. At first, I just wanted to get a book published. Once that happens, you start making "bigger" goals. One goal was to be able to support myself writing. It has taken a long time, but I am finally to that point where I don't feel like my husband is the sole bread winner. :)

SA: What has writing taught you?

Janice: Writing has taught me never to give up on dreams, and that some things you want in life take a lot more work and effort than you ever realized.

SA: What is your comfort food? Comfort drink? (alcoholic/non-alcoholic or both)

Janice: Comfort food... hmmm... I do love food. I guess I will always be a steak and baked potato girl, but as for snacking at home... I try to keep Hershey kisses on hand so I can have a "little" sweet. My drink of choice is regular Coke.

SA: Do you have a favorite t.v. show?

Janice: I have been a West Wing fan, but it is going off. I never missed Friends. Loved the show Ed. Scrubs. NCIS. Two and a Half Men. Grey's Anatomy. Desperate Housewives. I'm probably forgetting some...

SA: What is your dream vacation?

Janice: I LOVE to travel, absolutely love it. And different places give you different experiences. Right after we graduated from college I had the opportunity to go on a mission trip to Haiti, at that time (and perhaps still) the poorest country in the western hemisphere. That was a real eye opener for me. Incredible natural beauty. Lovely people. And unimaginable poverty.

My favorite vacation destinations are Wyoming, Key West, and NYC in no particular order. But I haven't made it to Europe yet, and I know I will fall in love with England, Scotland, Greece, etc.

SA: And the most important question of all: who is your favorite hottie and why?

Janice: I was a huge Harrison Ford fan for many years... even bumped into him in Jackson Hole and got his autograph. But when he and his wife broke up and he ended up with Callista Flockhart, my opinion of him waned.

I am a big Matthew McConnaughey fan (I hope I spelled that right). Luke Wilson makes me sigh. Hugh Grant is fun to watch in movies, but not exactly a heartthrob. Colin Firth when I need my Englishman fix. Oh, and I think Matthrew Broderick is a cutie pie!

I guess that wraps it up!
Janice
What once was lost can now be re-posted...
Due do some technical difficulties Jane had - no thanx to me and my crazy posting - there were some interviews that got lost in the transition. However, I realized much to my immense relief that I have a copy of those interviews saved in my drafts folder in my email - yay! So I will be re-posting them sometime either today or in the next few days, then I can concentrate on a contest idea I had. Hint: prizes will be involved.

FYI: the interviews that will be re-posted are for Janice Maynard, Lori Foster, and Susan Lyons. I plan on letting them know just in case they might have had a link to these interviews. I'm rather proud of them, plus each author gave such great answers, that I'd hate to lose them. Thank you for your understanding why I figure out my way in this crazy technical world....

Yay! My blog is so pretty!
Okay, I am so freakin' clueless when it comes to all this computer stuff, and I was getting frustrated with some things that I couldn't fix with my blogger template. I was jealous of the people that had the cool blogs, with all these pictures and links and fun stuff that I decided to pay attention as to where these blogs were coming from.

At some of the blogs I would visit, I came across a button for someone who designs blogs, and decided to contact that person. Her name is Jane, and over the last few weeks she has worked wonders for me (like I said, clueless). I won't go into detail about the mess she had to clean up (la la la la la la, I can't hear you) but believe me, it wasn't pretty. She's still fixing some stuff, and she's been so gracious, and I am so, so, SO happy with the outcome. So for an affordable way to get a pretty world (look! sparklies!), click on the button in the lower corner for Gemmak designs. I am very happy with the final results, and God bless Jane for putting up with me!

My First Romance Novel and How It Affected Me
Right around the time I discovered adult romances, I was still reading YA romances, like the Sweet Valley High books, and the Bantam "Sweet Dreams" books.  They fit in a little more with my own expectations of romance, though some seemed a little childish to me.  I guess that's why most avid readers read at a level much higher than their age range.  I was at the point where I was caught somewhere in the middle of the spectrum.

From that time, there is one book that stands out for me during those years, and it was from Bantam, and it was actually #1 in the "Sweet Dreams" series.  It is this book, "P.S. I Love You" by Barbara Conklin.

What is so special about it?  Well, there will have to be spoilers here to give you the full reasoning behind my everlasting love of this book.  (But before I go there, I want to mention that I always wanted to be the girl on the cover.  She is so pretty, with soulful brown eyes and long brown hair, which I never had growing up.  There, I had my little superficial moment).  So, the story is about Mariah, an aspiring novelist, who is all set for summer until she finds out her parents are getting divorced, and she goes with her mother and sister to Palm Springs to house-sit.  While there she meets Paul and falls in love for the first time.  Over the course of the summer, Mariah feels all the highs and lows of young love - the joy of being with someone who makes your heart race, the insecurities of believing you're not pretty or interesting enough to hold a cute boy's attention.  But Paul is not like that, and as time goes by, it becomes bittersweet - Mariah finds out that Paul is very ill.  He has cancer.  She is angry, and afraid, and desperate to get away from the worst case scenario.  I remember reading this and hating that the author ruined their love story.  I thought it was cruel to make Paul sick.  I cried every time I read it.  I cried for Paul and the life he would never live, and for the pain Mariah experiences when she loses Paul, and I cried for the strength she draws from her memories of her summer spent with her first love.  Their story was both magical and tragic, capturing so well those intense teenage feelings, yet by adding the very real and tramatic element of death, it projected that intensity to a higher level.  It was both a celebration and a memorial to the relationship, one that was made all the more poignant by the characters' ages.

The author decides not to let Mariah grieve indefinitely, however.  There is also a 2nd book called "Falling In Love Again" (see, same girl) that follows Mariah as she grieves for Paul, and eventually begins to care for someone else.  I enjoyed the story, but at the same time I couldn't help but wish that Mariah hadn't found someone quite so soon.  Paul was special; he was her first love - yet I think it was important to show young girls that life does go on, even when something truly tragic happens, and that you can have feelings for someone else, and not feel guilty about it.  I don't remember the other boy's name, but I guess it's not that important.  What was important was that Mariah did move on, and that it was with someone mature and understanding of her feelings for her first love and who found her to be very special because of it.  I believe things happen for a reason, and that Mariah had to experience these events exactly as they happened. It made for a richer, stronger story that still stays with me to this day.  Thank you Barbara Conklin, wherever you are.....

New author alert!

The lovely Julia Freemont, destitute and disgraced after her father gambled away the family fortune and ended his own life, would rather be a wealthy man's mistress than live in poverty.  Rich and handsome Brandon Barringer has long admired Julia from afar, but she never gave him the time of day as long as she was riding high on the tides of the upper class.

Now the tables have turned, and Julia has approached Brandon to ask for his help - in return for her personal favors.  Brandon agrees, but one condition: He will teach her to fully appreciate the subtleties of the senses, before they embark into carnal satisfaction.

Currently, you can find this book at any CVS Pharmacy (which is where I got mine).

Can't wait to get my hands on....
....this book....

Doppelganger

When a witch is born, a doppelganger is created. For the witch to master her powers, the twin must be killed. But what happens when the doppelganger survives?
Mirage, a bounty hunter, lives by her wits and lethal fighting skills. She always gets her mark. But her new mission will take her into the shadowy world of witches, where her strength may be no match against magic.
Miryo is a witch who has just failed her initiation test. She now knows that there is someone in the world who looks like her, who is her: Mirage. To control her powers and become a full witch, Miryo has only one choice. To hunt the hunter and destroy her.

This book, by Marie Brennan, sounds wickedly good.  I'm on my witch kick lately.    Vamps, weres and shapeshifters are great, but I've always wanted to be a witch, and this story sounds like it's just what I'm in the mood for: good vs. evil, power, death, magic - yep, a rockin' good time.

Why a witch?  Well, I've always imagined having magical powers - never bad ones, of course, unless it was to make my mean math teacher go "poof", but I would love to zip around like a bat on speed, conjuring up wild winds and unicorns and surfing the clouds with abandon.  I'd point a finger and zap creepy crawlers or conjure up a cute boy to go to the dance with.  The boys I usually liked were too cool to go to the dances.  The curse of loving the bad boys, I guess.  Now that I'm, ahem, an adult, my witch dreams are a bit more complicated, something like: blink - my taxes are done!   Anyway, I think I'd rather like being a witch.  Well, somedays, I believe I actually am one - though my powers are severely limited.....

In the mood for something sweet....
The Kiss (Berkley Sensation)

The night before safe, play-by-the-rules Tess Sommerville gets married, she goes out for an evening with her best friend, where they run into Tess' old high school crush, Will Tremere.  As they share a dance, both wonder what might have been, but say their good-byes and go their separate ways.  After all, Tess takes her promises seriously, and though she's had some doubts, she couldn't possibly disappoint her father.

But while Tess may keep her promises, she learns that her fiance' does not when she finds him messing around with another woman on the night before the wedding.  Devastated, all Tess can think about is getting as far away from the lying bastard that she planned to marry.

Will is on his way back to California, bringing a friend's dog back with him, but stopped in the Chicago area to catch up with the family he stayed with many years ago when he was an exchange student from England.  While there he runs into Tess, whom he briefly remembers from high school, and whom he also discovers has blossomed into a lovely woman that makes his heart race.  But he realizes that he's too late when he finds out she's getting married.

Yet fate has a way of changing plans when Tess asks if she can go with him on his roadtrip.  Suspecting something but too much of a gentleman to pry, he agrees, unwilling to turn away this chance to be with this sad beauty, even if it's only as a friend....

This is the first book I've read by author Elda Minger, and I thought it was an enjoyable, sweet read.  Will is the kind of hero we wish we all knew, though he be a little too perfect to hold your attention for long.  He's gorgeous, easy-going, and has a British accent, which I admit does nothing for me, but if I pictured him talking with a Scottish accent, then the picture totally worked for me.

Also, I am a sucker for animals, especially dogs, and little Toby and her new friend Sugar will steal your heart with their antics and adoration for Tess.  It just goes to show you show much our pets enrich our lives, and help get us through some very difficult times.  I will never understand people who don't love pets.  It's almost like I can't really relate to people who don't like to read.  "Does not compute".

Anyway, if you're in the mood for a sweet, likeable story without a lot of angst, action, or violence, then this story will work for you.  Enjoy.

Catching up with author LuAnn McLane about her "Wild Ride" in the romance industry
It all started with a writing contest held by one of readers' favorite romance authors, Lori Foster, that lead to.....

Wildest Dreams

~Today I'm chatting with a very classy and sweet lady, LuAnn McLane, and her adventures in romance writing.  March happens to be a good month for LuAnn, with it being her birthday month and the recent release of her newest romantic anthology "Wild Ride".  Happy birthday LuAnn!

SA: I've been a fan since your story in "Wildest Dreams".  Do you have a story of the heart, one that touches you more than most?
LuAnn:

Stacy, I think that Cabin Fever in "Wildest Dreams" will always be one of my favorites because like the character in the story I too discovered that I could write the "steamy" stuff.  I surprised myself  and just kept laughing when I reread the love scenes.  I've never had so much fun writing a story.   The book of my heart though is definitely "Dark Roots and Cowboy Boots", my first romantic comedy which will be out this coming August. I love Jamie Lee, the heroine because she is such a down to earth character that I think small town girls will really relate to.  There's a lot of sex in the city kind of stories our there and this one is for small town girls....okay redneck girls!   LOL  I dedicated this book to them!

[Note: thanx to country singer Gretchen Wilson, who wouldn't want to be a redneck woman?  It sure sounds like a whole lotta fun!]

SA: Cowboys and baseball - two of your passions.  I know you've done a lot of research on both for your stories.  What have you learned since writing stories about characters that are so ingrained in American culture?
LuAnn:

My savvy agent, Jenny Bent understood that my strong point was my hometown sexy southern voice.  With three sons and an alpha hubby I love strong, athletic men and we are seeing more of that in romance.  I actually went to a championship bull riding competition for research for "Hold on Tight" in the "Wild Ride" anthology..... and wow was I ever impressed.  Not only are these guys amazing athletes but  they are fearless as well....oh and a bit crazy.  And did I mention sexy?  And I go to Nashville, Tennessee a couple of times a year for my cowboy/country music fix.  You will see much more of both in my writing.

SA: Having met you a few times in person, you are so down-to-earth and friendly.  How do you feel about attending seminars and conventions, and are you ever nervous to meet your fans?

LuAnn:

I've always been a little on the shy side, but since turning 40 (several years ago) I decided that it was time to come out of my shell and go after what I want.  Today, I am much more self-assured.  I love meeting readers! Nothing makes me happier than to learn that someone enjoyed one of my stories.

SA: As a reader, who are some of your favorite authors?  Do you ever get star-struck?

LuAnn:

Susan Elizabeth Phillips is one of my favorites and I was all a-flutter when I met her at a conference but of course she is so friendly that she managed to put me at ease.  Recently I met another favorite, Karen Robards at a party at RWA.  I am a huge fan and an editor at NAL led me over and introduced me because I was too nervous to go over on my own.  Since we are both from Kentucky and also have three sons, we had a lot in common and again she was so gracious and friendly that I relaxed and just had fun.

Taking Care of Business

SA: Okay, you knew this was coming.  James Denton and Keith Urban are two of your favorite hotties, yet both are different from each other.  What would you say, other than their good looks, makes them so appealing?  (And might I compliment you on your excellent taste ;)  )

James Denton, reading "Taking Care of Business"

LuAnn:

Yes they are both so different but I really like that they are quiet...almost shy and seem so sincere.  They both also seem to have a bit a bad-boy wild side that they've managed to tame. James Denton is such a family man and Keith Urban also is a one woman guy and neither seem to be caught up in the whole celebrity thing.

Another reason to appreciate country music: Keith Urban

SA: What are the kinds of stories you want to tell?  What keeps you going back to the keyboard day after day?
LuAnn:

I love to make people laugh.  You won't get any angst from me.  My goal is to entertain, to put a smile on the readers face...and hopefully get a sigh or two.  Romance is about hope...about believing against all odds but most of all about love.  That's what keeps me coming back.  I can honestly say that if I won the lottery I would still *have* to write.  (But it sure would be nice to have an office with a view of the ocean).

SA: As a wife and the mother of teenagers, how does your family impact your writing?  How old will your daughter be before you'll let her read your stories?  What would you say to your children if they wanted to follow in your footsteps and write for a living?

LuAnn:

My family still comes first but it is fun to have another identity other than just "mom".  One of the fun things about waiting until now to pursue my writing is that it fills the gap now that my kids don't need me around all of the time.  As for when I'll let my daughter read my stories?  Well, I read way over my head when I was a teenager, but since it's my writing I would have a hard time having her read a love scene that I wrote.....sheesh!   I don't think any of my kids will ever write. I do have a son who is artistic so we have that in common.  I think I scared them away from writing!

SA: LuAnn, you always look so classy and well-dressed, but you don't come across as high maintenance.  Are you a clothes horse?   Is shopping one of your vices?  If not, what would be?
LuAnn:

Oh my thank you!  As you know my big thing is coloring my hair...I'm now red and loving it.  But no, I'm not high maintenance at all.   I do love clothes but I don't get the time to shop often.  If I had a vice it would be boots and bracelets...love them both.

SA: You also seem to have a bit of a wild side, what with changing your haircolor and wanting to ride the mechanical bull in June.  Do you think your writing has made you more of a free spirit?
LuAnn:

Oh definitely and instead of being a wild teen...I'm a waited for middle age.  Instead of driving my parents crazy I drive my husband crazy.  LOL  I basically just love to have fun and yes my writing has helped make me more of a free spirit.   I can be very quiet and the next minute I can be dancing on a table....

SA: Speaking of wild, what is something you've always wanted to try?  Sky dive?  Swim the English channel?  Act in a movie?
LuAnn:

Someday....I will get a tattoo!  I want to get one at Miami Ink in South Beach.

SA: What is the inspiration behind the roller coaster attraction?  Are you afraid of heights?  Have you personally done research for writing those scenes?
LuAnn:

My brother-in-law worked for a company who builds roller coasters and I was always fascinated with the stories that he told.  I wanted to do something different and interesting and my editor liked the little tid-bits of trivia about roller coaster in Wild Ride.  For the really fun scene that my editor wanted me to do (if you don't know what I'm referring to you can guess) I had to do lots of online research....how fast, how long is the ride, what happens if you turn upside down....LOL you get the picture.

SA: Name three things in your life that are important to you, not counting your family because that's a given:
LuAnn:

My faith
My country
My writing :-)

SA:  Writing love stories for a living, what has love taught you and what would you like to pass on to your children about love?
LuAnn:

I see trend in my stories where the hero and heroine *think* that some things are important and can't be overcome.... some are opposites in personality or have careers that are very different or seem to want different things out of life but love always ends up being the most important thing in the end.  Again, overcoming obstacles, having love winning against the odds and just having faith that things will turn out if you just hang on tight and believe....that's what I want for my kids.  Giving up is not an option.  I've been married 25 years and it hasn't been a walk in the park but never giving up....oh and having a sense of humor will get you through the darkest of times.

Thanx LuAnn!  You are a peach!

~ As you can see, LuAnn is just as sweet as you'd imagine her to be.  Check out her books - you won't be disappointed! ~

My Review of "Wild Ride" by LuAnn McLane
Wild Ride

Okay, I know everyone and their third cousin has a blog, and many of them review books, so mine is no more special to the world that the next one, but it's special to me, and so are the books I review.  LuAnn McLane is a sweet and talented lady, and I am privileged to have gotten to know her over the last year or so.

Note: I will be posting an interview with LuAnn in the near future, so stay tuned!

Whiplash"

Indiana farmgirl Andi Cooper has seen it all in her career as a travel writer, and is known for her honest and straightforward opinions when it comes to her reviews. This time the presence of her company is requested specifically by WIld Ride Resort owner Oliver "Max" Maxwell. Andi is not too thrilled to be reviewing a place that in her mind is the equivalent of an eyesore, but the owner insisted and Andi is determined to do the best job she can, but she's going to be honest. No way is she going to give the place a 5-star review just because Max is a good-looking charmer....

Max loves his resort, loves fixing the roller coasters that he grew up with, and believes his resort offers something extra for adults beyond another amusement park. He truly believes Wild Ride is special, and he thinks once Andi Cooper gets to know the place more intimately, so will she. Max isn't prepared for their initial meeting, or for his reaction to the lovely and tempting Andi. But this is about business, and Max promised himself he would not interfere in order to win brownie points. But he's having a difficult time keeping his hands to himself...

"Hold On Tight"

Krista Ross is Max's right-hand woman, taking care of the all those big and rich details and setting up the entertainment for his resort. Hot country star Travis Mackey has requested to stay at the Wild Ride to relax before starting another grueling tour, and it's up to Krista to make sure Travis relaxes and enjoys his stay, no matter how high maintenance this former rodeo rider has become in his rising singing career. Professional and serious Krista grits her teeth and gets the job done while trying to ignore the charming and sexy cowboy, despite thinking that yeah, maybe he actually can sing....

Uptight entertainment coordinator Krista sets Travis' blood on fire, as much as he'd like it to be otherwise. This sexy no-nonsense blonde is determined to make his stay at the resort enjoyable, all in the name of business. But Travis is really tired of people sucking up to him, trying to impress him, and right now there's nothing he enjoys more than agitating this fiesty woman and getting under her skin, just like she's getting under his.....

"Worth the Wait"

Jenna Wagner has had a serious crush on Cole Forrester since she was a teenager, and those feelings have blossomed into love over the years. But Cole is a player, and Jenna is not willing to be another notch on his bedpost. Besides, he treats her like another sister. So when his real sister and new husband can't go to the Wild Ride resort for her honeymoon, Cole asks his friend Jenna if she'd like to go in their place, each paying for half the price and enjoying the amusement park, even going their separate ways if that's what they choose to do.

Cole knows Jenna's thinks he's a player, and it's his own darn fault. But recently Cole's feelings have started to change, and a lot of that has to do with his friendship with Jenna. She has become more important to him than he even realized, and now all he wants is a chance to prove his feelings are real, and forever. Taking her to the resort is his way of being alone with her, and showing her exactly how he feels. Turns out that his little school teacher might have a little bit of a wild streak in her after all.....

One of the aspects I love about LuAnn's stories is the colorful dashes of humor she sprinkles throughout her stories that mix really well with the charming small-town feel of the characters. It's refreshing to read about people that lead glamourous lives but are not so worldly and jaded that they take their pleasure carelessly and often. I also enjoy LuAnn's stories because they are romantic, and intimate, not just cookie-cutter versions of today's more erotic stories, which I actually happen to love, but feel the need for a more traditional, satisfying romance. She creates likeable, charming characters that readers immediately care about, and reaching the happily-ever-after is definitely worth the ride. I continue to look forward to future stories by one of my favorite authors.

MY Hottie Has Become Very Popular These Days a.k.a. My tribute to model Nathan Kamp
Okay, he's technically not my hottie (unfortunately), but I do feel like a was the one who found him.  I'm sure others feel the same way, LOL.  I've had this crazy obsession since before Christmas last year, and I am forever indebted to a lady by the name of Billie Jo for providing me with his website:

Lady Of The Knight (Zebra Debut)

Sylvia Day mentioned my hottie, er, Nathan at Romancing the Blog when she wrote about "Judging a Book by it's Cover".  He's the model that's everywhere....

I love this cover because to me, it signifies what the ultimate male fantasy is: rugged, masculine, sexy, a bit dangerous, and good-looking but not pretty.  He appears very capable, very confident, and of course a bit arrogant.  And I love the fact that he's alone on the cover.  Who needs the heroine when this guy is more than enough?

Tender Is the Knight (Zebra Historical Romance)

Michelle Buonfiglio mentions him in a post at Romance By the Blog (note: that's me who gave the link.  Yep, told you I was obsessed!)

One of my favorite authors, Lori Foster,  also mentions him since he is on the cover of her "Wildly Winston" re-release of all the Winston brothers.....I don't like this cover as much because of the shorter hair, but he's still pretty hot.

Wildly Winston

Even Jaid Black's tag board is talking about him - says he was on "Guiding Light" and "One Life to Live" - well, he is on her latest cover.....

Deep, Dark & Dangerous

This book by Sherrilyn Kenyon is one of the first covers I remember seeing his face.  I think that's when I first began to wonder who he was.  It took several months to get that answer.

Sins of the Night (A Dark-Hunter Novel)

Look at that face, that mouth.  Wouldn't yo just loved to be kissed by this guy????

Master of Darkness

Now this is a SEXY cover.  Look at how dangerous he looks.  Um, yeah, I like it.  A LOT.

Sword of Darkness

What a gorgeous body to go along with that beautiful face of his.....

My Demon's Kiss (Bound in Darkness)

Hey, why stop at one when you can show 2, or 10????

The Devil's Knight

And he's not just a pretty face, either.  He's also appeared in some wonderful benefits, such as Models for Christ.  Makes me like him even more.  Says he married the love of his life - now what fan of romance wouldn't just melt at that?  Sounds like a wonderful person.

Okay, I've rambled on enough, but stay as long as you like, admiring this guy.  I know I would....and any other info you have on Mr. Hottie would be greatly appreciated!

Thanx for sharing in my obsession......

An author with Some Imagination
Beginning

I'll admit that I'm pretty open-minded when it comes to what I read.  Of course there are certain topics/storylines that drive me nuts, but overall, I just enjoy the process of losing myself in a good story.  Sometimes though, I wish there was a little more imagination out there.  A little more originality.  What I really want is an author who comes up with a concept that's been used before and makes it fresh, exciting, bold.  Someone who stands out, and consistently tells amazing stories.  I've recently found one that fits that description, and I'd like to share.

Shiloh Walker writes stories like that.  Now let me warn you, her stories fall under the category of "blazing hot".  They are erotic, they are sexually explicit, they are very intense, but they are also fabulous.

The Hunters: Interlude

There are so many different elements to her stories, and Shiloh likes to break the rules.  I think that is one of the reasons I admire her writing so much; she's not afraid to push the envelope and create stories outside the box.  The covers that I have here are from her Hunters series, which I end up re-reading everytime a new book comes out so I don't miss anything.  They are currently my favorites, but there are many other stories to choose from as well.  The thing about the Hunters series is that it's not just about vampires.  There are werewolves and witches, magick and power, love and sex, life and death, not to mention a few surprises thrown in.

  The Hunters: Ben and Shadoe

So if you are a fearless reader, someone who loves a sexy story that could melt the glaciers and make you blush, check out the books by Shiloh Walker.  She has something for everyone - not just fantasy and paranormal, but you'll even find contemporaries in her completed works.  I look forward to finding out where her imagination leads us next.....
