Support Katiebabs and let people know that It Gets Better
The always incredibly supportive and courageous Katiebabs has posted a pledge and a challenge to let people know that It Gets Better. She shares her personal story about being bullied and reaches her heart out to those who are currently experiencing pain and perhaps even considering suicide themselves. So let's support her pledge and help her reach her goal of $500:

Update on the Penny Wars - Network of Strength
So as of Wednesday, here is what we've collected in the last two weeks (the bottle of Cherry Coke Zero is there as a means to show how big the jars are). We've had an outpouring of support, and it's been rather fun. Of course since it is a war, we have to be mean and put silver & dollar bills in the other team's jar (they lose points, depending on what they collect besides pennies). And the best thing is, the money is all going to a good cause: the Network of Strength.
I would like to thank some of you here - Karen, Liza & Mandi - for your contributions. You guys are wonderful. Big hugs to each of you for sending me pennies to put in the jar. I think we've collected over $100 so far. That is incredible. Just wanted to share this and though it's no surprise, you all touch me with your generosity.
Thank you :) Labels: good causes

Network of Strength: fighting breast cancer
This is the time of year when my company supports The Network of Strength (formerly known as the Y-Me cause). The various departments come up with fun and clever ways to collect donations. We've seen a lot of gorgeous raffle baskets (in fact Simone Elkeles donated one with her books!), jewelry, pizza, ice cream socials, bowling...all kinds of ways to participate and really have a good time with it. Our area is having a friendly "penny war" with another department. We are only to collect pennies, and they collect the other coins. For every nickel, dime, quarter we get, we lose so many points. For every penny they get, they lose so many points. One of my coworkers is really competitive and will (playfully?) yell at anyone who donates anything other than pennies, although any donation received is welcomed and appreciated. So I thought it might be fun, if any of you are interested, to ask for a penny. Just one. You could send more, but really even asking you to mail me one penny is asking a lot. And no one is under any obligation. I'm just curious to know how many I might collect. And if you're interested, feel free to email me at: trelainastarblazer AT yahoo DOT com and I will send you my snail mail addy. Please be sure to put "penny donation" or something like that in the subject line. What fun ways have you supported a good cause? Labels: good causes

"Power of Love" anthology - for a good cause
Special Anthology Trade Paperback Berkley Trade - June 3, 2008 ISBN-10: 0425221482 ISBN-13: 978-0425221488 12 Original Stories by Lori Foster, Erin McCarthy, Toni Blake, Dianne Castell, Karen Kelley, Rosemary Laurey, Luanne McLane, Janice Maynard, Lucy Monroe, Patricia Sargeant, Kay Stockham & J.C. Wilder
In this engaging anthology of never-before-published stories, twelve award-winning and bestselling authors are united by their unique visions of the resilient woman and her quest for self, for fulfillment, for empowerment, and for an enriching new appreciation for what love really means—and why it matters.A young woman is torn between the overbearing security of her fiancé and the excitement of an old flame...a desperate wife is forced into the workplace for the first time in her life...an ambitious professional woman finally finds the courage to take control of her career—and her man...an emotionally fragile divorcee finds resolve in the ethereal visitations of an archangel. These are just some of the women who discover and rediscover their wonderfully fallible selves in the shadow of love—romantic love, platonic love, new love, and lost love. You'll be touched, inspired, charmed, and amused by these twelve original stories of disparate longings, unsettled lives, and the power of love. I love the idea behind this anthology because it is about empowering women, not only in finding a happy ending on the pages, but because in real life, it helps women who need to get to that point in their lives. Not all women are born strong, or become strong. Sometimes they need a little help getting there. These 12 writers came together to lend a hand. I want to do the something too.
I hope to get at least 2 copies of this book, and have it signed over the weekend, so please stay tuned for a special contest. If you'd like to make sure you get a copy, you can go here. Proceeds go to benefit the Cincinnati's Battered Women's Shelter. Thank you for helping the cause. Labels: anthology, good causes, Power of Love, reader/author get-together

I believe this website has been around for awhile; I vaguely remember reading about it at other websites and blogs, but this year I am going to do something about it. So I thought this would be the perfect way to start the new year, sort of like a "pay it forward" gesture, specifically involving books. It's a 4-times-a-year event, happening on the first week of January, April, July and October. I've already decided who I'm going to give a book to, though I haven't decided on which book quite yet. What a cool idea, and I'm just going to have fun with it. I'm curious: has anyone else done this? If not, is it something you would consider doing? Then spread the word! Labels: bafab, good causes

8th annual Children's Memorial Radioathon
Many of you know that there are a few causes near and dear to my heart: supporting the troops, the care and welfare of animals, and anything to do with children. This past weekend was the 8th annual Eric and Kathy 36-hour radioathon for Children's Memorial Hospital. And every year I listen to the stories, uplifting and sad, and they never fail to make me want to do something, something important. Another year has come and gone, and so far they've raised $1,847,912 to help Chicago's kids. Yay! That is outstanding. When you hear all the bad stuff on the news and see cruelty and greed and selfishness, being a part of something like this can really lighten your heart and give you faith in people again, or continue to have it in those who tirelessly pick up the torch to fight another day. There is still time to donate...just go here. What cause(s) do you support? How do you try to make a difference? Labels: good causes, helping, kids

Is it being lucky, or being blessed?
7/7/07
Today is an unusual day, one we won't see again. The number "7" has always been associated with luck, must like a 4-leaf clover or a rabbit's foot (which is really too gruesome to contemplate). So for me, thoughts turned to what it means to be lucky, and at first I was going to post about hard work vs. the art of being lucky, but then I was blog-hopping and came across a post that struck a bit of a nerve. Though the post had nothing to do with being lucky, there was a comment made that got me thinking. In yesterday's post over at the Pink Ladies' blog, author Patricia Sargeant is talking about her five favorite books, and why they are such favorites of hers. She mentions a favorite author of mine, the incomparable Suz Brockmann, and Suz's book "Letters to Kelly" and how it inspired Patricia to start donating to Amnesty International, an organization that works to "protect human rights worldwide". (Most recently UK journalist Alan Johnson, who had been held in captivity for 114 days, was given an award by Amnesty International UK). Many of us live an existence where we are free to do so many things, such as get an education, work for a living, socialize, go to concerts, zip through a drive-through, see our family members, walk on our own two feet, eat until our bellies are full. Some may say that we are lucky, but I believe we are blessed. Being blessed does not mean we don't have moments of suffering, or heartache and sadness. Sometimes those that suffer the worst are the ones that recognize their blessings more easily than those who live a relatively easy life. Those individuals who go through tragedy understand that what they do have in their lives is precious, worth fighting for. And a lot of times those are the people that give back. Over the years, I've donated to numerous charities involving children. I lost an aunt to Multiple Sclerosis and have collected money and walked for MS. I've sent care packages to the troops. All safe, easy tasks that haven't really taken up a lot of my time or money. Then there are those who donate not only money, but their time, their passion to a cause that means a lot to them. It becomes their calling, their purpose. These are the people that give hope, help find answers and cures. Not just the doctors and nurses and caregivers, but the nameless volunteers who live and breathe in the cause(s) they believe in. In addition to AI, Suz is also a strong advocate for the troops and for gay rights. Author Brenda Novak holds an annual auction in her fight against Juvenile Diabetes. Blogger Mailyn is a passionate supporter against cruelty to animals. These are just a few shining examples of people who count their blessings and do their part to educate and inform others about the injustices in the world and violence against the innocent, or shed light on extraordinary, everyday heroes. They do it for no other reason than that they truly believe and wish to make a difference. I could go on and on because if you're a reader of my blog, you know I love to "read" myself talk, but this post isn't about me, so I will now turn it over to you and your thoughts: What cause, charity, or organization do you believe in? Why are you passionate about it/them? What are the blessings in your life?

Another blog's contest - for a good cause
Okay so much for getting away, but this is a cool contest for some important causes that are near to my heart, and I feel very strongly about: the troops, battered women, and the homeless animal shelter. My pal Laurie is having a contest at her blog for a copy of the Author/Reader cookbook "The Write Ingredients", which has been signed by several of the authors. Many readers have also included recipes (including yours truly - page 21) - go check it out here. You also have the option of buying a copy, or several (as they make GREAT gifts) by going to Amazon or check it out directly at the Samhain website. Oh, and tell Laurie I said "hey".
