"Dexter"

Product Description
Dexter is based on the compelling novel "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" by Jeff Lindsay. Orphaned at the age of four and harboring a traumatic secret, Dexter Morgan (Dexter Morgan (Emmy- and Golden Globe- nominated actor Michael C. Hall from "Six Feet Under") is adopted by a police officer who recognizes Dexter's homicidal tendencies and guides his son to channel his gruesome passion for human vivisection in a constructive way - by killing those heinous perpetrators that are above the law or who have slipped through the cracks of justice. A respected member of the police force, a perfect gentleman and a man with a soft spot for children, it's hard not to like Dexter. Although his drive to kill is unflinching, he struggles to emulate normal emotions he doesn't feel, and to keep up his appearance as a caring, socially responsible human being.
I just started watching the first season of "Dexter" this weekend and it's rather....unsettling. Of course I had my own idea of what to expect: charming and charismatic serial killer uses his powers for good, relatively speaking, instead of choosing random, innocent victims to dismember. And it's pretty like that, though I don't know that I'd call Dexter charming as much as mesmorizingly creepy. He's intense and awkward and a little too good at his job for me to find him charming.
Dexter has issues, ones that go back to him being a kid with violent urges. And he gets all giddy when he goes up against another serial killer, someone with artistic and refined sensibilities. He's not really into sex, and ends up dating a woman with some hang-ups that prevent them from gettin' busy, and that suits him just fine. He approaches situations from a very detached, unbiased place, mainly because he doesn't have the ability to feel the emotion most people do in any given situation. This is really beneficial in being very effective at work. He's able to analyze a situation and uses the evidence to deduce how a crime was commited.
I haven't quite figured out, after 4 episodes, whether I like the show or not. It's interesting, no question, but eerie. And I believe in real life Dexter is engaged to the woman who plays his sister on the show, which I don't want to even think about, because now when I watch them I have to say their bantering makes me go "eww". You can tell the actress who plays his sister is totally into him in a non-sisterly way, and even though Dexter's adopted, it's still too weird for me.
Still, I'll finish watching the first season and decide whether or not it's worth watching beyond that.
Any shows you've recently started watching?
Yay or Nay?

  1. Wasn't Dexter a great show? I never thought I would be so into it. I also need my Nip/Tuck fix and lately I have started watching Flight of the Concords, a wacky hilarious show on HBO about two guys in a band.

  2. I love Dexter. Crazy as it sounds, the show is actually better than the books.

United States of Tara is one that I just started watching.

  3. I just started watching this recently, too! I like it a lot - got really into the story and characterization - but am a bit squeamish, so have decided to take a break before watching season 2.

  4. I've never watched Dexter but my sister has been trying to get me to for the longest time. She is a complete fanatic with the series. I don't know if it would appeal to me though. He's like a "good guy" serial killer, right?

  5. I watched the first couple of episodes but I couldn't quite get into it. I think that was just the mind frame I was in at the time though :)

  6. I'm totally hooked on How I Met Your Mother. My brother has been telling me to watch it from the very first episode and I finally started watching it in re-runs this year.

I've never seen Dexter, but might give it a try.

  7. Kate, the first 4 episodes left me feeling a bit weirded out, but now I've watched 8 episodes and I gotta admit, it's growing on me. I've also seen snippets of the Flight of the Concords and I'm strangely fascinated by it.

Seneca I've not read the books, but I'm understanding the appeal of the show. It's getting more and more interesting.

Lindsey, in the first episode I was convinced we'd see him dismember the bodies and I didn't think I could handle it, but luckily that's not the case. So far what I've seen hasn't bothered me.

Barbara, yes he's a "good" serial killer, meaning he goes after child killers and other monsters that kill/hurt innocent people. I gotta say I like that side of him.

Orannia, it took me awhile to decide if I could continue watching. The first DVD left me uncertain, but by the 5th & 6th episodes, I could feel myself really getting more drawn in.

Liza, I'm realizing I need to add more comedy to my Netflix Q. There's Entourage, but it's not the same as a sitcom. I think I should add that one to my list.
