Home again...
I am back, well rested and happy to be home. And the nice thing? I didn't miss the internet as much as I thought I would, though I did miss my online friends. I feel a little out of the loop right now, but sometimes that's okay, since I'm not a major player when it comes to the hottest news anyway. I'm a speck in the grand scheme of things.
Highlight of my trip? I got to meet Kati while I was in D.C., but I didn't take any pictures. (Saving that for the Bellathon). She's a sweetheart, smart and funny, and it was so nice to go to a bookstore with someone else who reads romance. That doesn't happen too often. Kati reads like a fiend, and she's got very definite ideas about she likes and doesn't like, but she's never mean about it. She's cool about respecting other's opinions. It was a pleasure to meet her in person.
I got to smell the lovely cherry blossoms, though I didn't head down to the festival. It was lovely, sunny, in the 70's, and felt like spring. I had to laugh at how many people gave me their sympathy for living in Chicago. Really, it's not that bad. Yeah, we had a bad winter, but you know, I grew up in northern Minnesota (a.k.a. "The Shining" syndrome) so I'm almost used to it. Now it's about 38 degrees, and there were even snow flurries earlier today, but I'm a midwest girl at heart, so I deal.
I didn't read as much as I thought I would, but I finished a few books, and will post reviews soon. I just finished Ann Aguirre's "Grimspace" and LOVED it. It was a refreshing change from all the romance I've been reading, and I definitely plan on getting the next one. Good call, as always, Kati.
So tell me: how's the weather where you are right now?
And what have you been reading?

No place like home...
Photobucket

With the nasty winter weather, I've been complaining even more than usual, and that can be a drag, so I decided to be a little more cheerful and talk about more positive things, and I kept thinking about what I do love about where I live: the midwest, or more specifically, Chicago ('burbs). Some of the great things about this city are:

  • Chicago pizza! Nothing like Gino's East deep dish -yum!

  • Oprah - she's had her not so stellar moments, but I give the woman credit for a lot of the positive things she does do, like her Angel Network and getting people to read

  • theatre. It may not be Broadway, but Chicago has quite a pool of talent

  • Lake Michigan and Navy Pier - it's a cool place to hang out in the summer - and I love the Taste of Chicago

  • ghost hunter Richard T. Crowe - I've actually gone on a tour

  • Childrens Memorial Hospital and 101.9FM the mix for their annual radioathon

  • Woodfield Mall. Before Mall of America, it was rather well-known. Still a mall is just a mall...

  • O'Hare airport - I love hanging out there, have even worked there for a brief time

  • the Frank Sinatra song!

What are some of the things you love about where you live?

Hitting close to home...
I know most of you are aware of the awful tragedy that happened yesterday (August 1st) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, when an 8-lane bridge buckled and collapsed during the evening rush hour, causing dozens of cars to fall more than 60 feet into the Mississippi River. So far, 4 people have been confirmed dead, but with about 30 others missing, the number of those who died in this horrible accident will no doubt be much higher.
Now this is not the first time something like this has happened, and it's certainly not the worst event that's ever occurred in my lifetime, but for me, this one shook me up more than usual because it was a place I knew quite well. I grew up in northern Minnesota, but had been to the Twin Cities countless times, even lived in downtown Minneapolis for 3 months when I was 19. So when I heard the news, my first thoughts were of my family and high school friends, many of whom moved away from where I grew up to live in the Cities, where the jobs are. So far, my mom hasn't reported any bad news, and I'm praying that it stays that way.
The truth is, when I hear things like this happening, my heart goes out to the families for the loss of loved ones and for the awful news, but I don't dwell on it much. I imagine it happening in an abstract kinda way, but I'm ashamed to admit it doesn't really penetrate as deeply when it's people or an area I'm not familiar with. That is just such a callous thing to say, but I have to admit it's the truth. After yesterday, I know I will be thinking about this everytime I drive across a bridge or an overpass. I know I will be remembering those who died so horribly. Drowning is my biggest fear, and I shudder thinking about those poor people trapped in their cars. It's a sobering and devastating thing to imagine.
I hope each of you is safe and sound with your loved ones tonight, human and furbabies alike. Give them each a big hug and let them know just how important they are to you.
