Chicago: The annual Eric & Kathy's 36 Hour Radiothon
 It's that time of year again, the time I never forget. The annual Eric & Kathy radiothon for Children's Memorial Hospital. They've helped raise money for the last 9 years, and I've been a part of it for most of that time because it's a very dear cause. Anything that supports taking care of sick children automatically has a place in my heart. I'm not hear to preach or beg. I just like to post this every year because it means something to me. However If you were interested in donating, you can go here. Otherwise, please keep at least one child in your heart today. And have a wonderful weekend :)

Children's Memorial Hospital - 10th annual radiothon
It's that time of year again, time to support Eric & Kathy's 10th annual 36-hour radiothon supporting Children's Memorial Hospital. It's one of the causes - like the troops - that I am most passionate about. It's a bit later in the year than it was in 2008, and it seems rather unusual to have it such a significant day like 9/11, but perhaps hosting the show today of all days is one way people can make a difference and do some small but significant thing to create miracles. When it comes to the kids, there's never a bad time, sadly, in this case, just a necessary one. But that's why we give: so that one day it won't be necessary. I've listened to the radiothon for the last several years, and hearing the same stories year after year never fails to choke me up. These kids are so precious, each and every last one of them. I'm humbled by their resilience and capacity for love, even as sick children they have so much to give. They are why we go on when it seems impossible. A really cool thing: as I was driving home today, around 5:30-ish, there was a special surprise guest that came over the airwaves: U2! They're in town for 2 nights for their tour, and from what it sounded like, they were in the car and heard the stories being played over the airwaves, and decided to call in. It was so amazing. The offered up a really cool package for some ultra premium tickets to Sunday night's show at Soldier Field. There's an auction being held to get the package, and last I checked the bid is at $4200! Oh to have that kind of money to help such an important cause and to see one of the world's most amazing bands! I'm so tempted to max out my credit card right about now... If anyone is interested in finding out more, and/or is able to give even a little, you may donate here. I do my small part so that one day there won't be a need for a radiothon. 9th annual Children's Memorial Hospital radiothon
It's all about the kids. Today, August 8th through 6pm on August 9th, Eric & Kathy's 9th annual Radiothon. Every year I listen, because there is nothing, NOTHING, worse than a sick child. And every year I donate, because there is nothing more important that giving up that extra cappuccino or even a book to give back to a child. Aidan - look at that little face! True, this is a Chicago hospital, but kids from all over the world come here for care. It's an amazing place, and I believe strongly in everything they do. Every year I contribute to the Children's Memorial Hospital, located here in Chicago but one that has patients from all over the world. Every year they help so many sick kids, and the spirit and love and caring of the people involved with the hospital is so inspiring to me. First I want to say that donations are trickling in, and I thank you all from the bottom of my heart for being so kind and generous. I really hope I can send Children's Memorial Hospital a large donation, but even a small contribution is a wonderful gesture, and I am touched by how giving people are, especially during this time of year. It is amazing to me that people who've never met me in person are so willing to share their good fortune with others in need. Amazing, but not surprising. It's truly a beautiful thing. Remember, by sending me a check for $5 made payable to the Children's Memorial Foundation gets you into the drawing for a Romantic Times subscription. (See the 12/31 sticky post for more info). One event I've started participating in is the United Airlines' Operation North Pole, aka the Fantasy Flight. Every year at this time, employees and their family and friends come together to make a special holiday memory for terminally ill children. What we do is decorate a gate at O'Hare airport, and turn it into the North Pole. Classrooms make decorations for us, and many others are donated for the event. It's incredible to see pilots, flight attendants, mechanics, customer service agents and others come together to make this day as wonderful as possible for these children. Last night I was there to help decorate, and to see these ramp servicemen, tired and cold and disheveled, after they've been there since 3am, coming over to help put huge displays together without complaint, well it's really very sweet. What happens is the kids are brought to the airport to one gate, where they are boarded onto the plane and given special first class treatment, each and every one. They used to actually fly the plane and circle up to Milwaukee, but now they just taxi on the airport grounds and "land" at a different gate. The shades are pulled down so the little kids have no idea the plane doesn't actually take off, and when they get off the plane, they are at the North Pole, complete with Santa Claus, music, face painters, and all kinds of fun activities. It is a wondrous sight. The "flight" is actually in progress as I type this. I wanted to be there tonight, but I forgot to get the necessary clearance to be there a 2nd day. But my thoughts and prayers are with those brave little kids, and I hope this is one of their happiest moments. Sadly, I heard last night that a couple of them are too sick to make it today. My heart is breaking for them right now. They are all in my prayers. If you have kids or know of any close to you, I'd be giving them a big ole hug right about now...
