Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning
Photobucket

From http://www.anneofgreengables.com/ :

Synopsis: It is 1945 and Anne Shirley (Academy-award nominee and Golden Globe winner, Barbara Hershey) now a successful, middle-aged writer has returned to Prince Edward Island for an extended visit. On a whim, she agrees to write a play for a theatre producer. The play, she reasons, will keep her busy—at least busy enough to not go out of her mind with worry about her only son who has yet to return from the war overseas. But a long-hidden secret in the form of a letter from her errant father, discovered under the floorboards at Green Gables, provides a distraction of its own. As Anne struggles to complete the play, she delves into long-buried memories, reliving the troubled years before she arrived as an orphan at the Green Gables farmhouse. She is forced to confront the fact that she made up stories about her life; after her mother died and when her father deserted his young daughter. During that time, Young Anne (newcomer Hannah Endicott-Douglas), is taken into the care of a wealthy matriarch, Amelia Thomas (Academy-award winner Shirley MacLaine) and her daughter-in-law, Louisa (Rachel Blanchard), which changes her life forever.
Over the course of one remarkable summer, Anne Shirley discovers the astonishing truth about her father, the origins of her quest for "kindred spirits" and the roots of her brilliant, magical imagination.

*************

I've been a huge fan of this series since I was 14 years old and, with my best friend Jennie, watched the several hours of "Anne of Green Gables" and "Anne of Avonlea" starring Megan Follows all in one sitting. I totally fell in love with those movies, watching them over and over again. Even today, if I catch them on t.v., I'll stop and watch. I have them both on VHS, and know I need to upgrade to DVD one of these days.
Anyway, I loved those movies so much I'm not sure I can watch a re-make. I didn't even much care for Anne 3, even though both of the main characters - Anne and Gilbert - were portrayed by the same people - Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie.
Are you a fan of Anne of Green Gables?
How do you feel about remakes?
Which has the been the best/worst remake?

  1. I'm embarrassed to say this since everything about it is Canadian Classic, but I've never seen any of the shows nor read the books.

  2. Stacy - this is one of my all time favorite series and like you, I have done marathon screenings of all the shows. I was so excited to see your post, I had no idea that Anne of Green Gables: A New Beginning had been produced - but you can bet I'll be watching it. Many thanks for the heads up!

  3. I must have watched the original Anne a zillion times, but not sure about this all new showing. I was too gung ho over the one where Anne and Gilbert get married and he goes off to war.
Where is Gilbert? I had such a crush on him. Sigh. And my middle name is Anne with an "E" like Anne :D

  4. The movies were an integral part of my childhood. I remember first seeing them at age 6 and pretty much at least once every year afterwards. And they never get old! Gosh, i had such a crush on Gilbert. heh.

  5. Oh, I LOVED the first two movies. Megan Follows just epitomized Anne for me. But #3? It was downright embarrassing and what a waste of time. *sigh*

I only read the first three books. After that I got bored. But, those movies are still some of my all-time favorites. When OPB (publich broadcasting) did all of those specials like this and A Little Princess and a bunch of others, they showcased some of the best childrens movies out there.

I really need to find myself a copy of 1 & 2 on DVD. :)

  6. I love all the Anne books and the first 2 movies. I plan on getting the entire series on dvd. One of my favorite books I've ever been given was my copy of Anne of Green Gables. My aunt bought it for me when she was on Prince Edward Island.

  7. I love those movies. i also have them in VHS and have not upgraded them yet. The books are awesome as well. Have them all and love them.

  8. Wow, Stacy! Thanks so much for the heads up - I had no idea, and I am such a huge Anne fan. Not sure how to feel about this after watching the trailer - it seems quite a departure from the books - but I'm pretty psyched anyway. I wouldn't think anyone could top Megan Follows, but the new young Anne looks pretty good.

I wish, though, they'd do an adaptation of Rilla's book. That one is SO awesome.

  9. I LOVE NO 1 AD 2 THOU I THOUGHT NUMBER 3 WASNT SO GD BECUASE THE CHARCTERS JUST DIDNT SEEM THE SAME TO ME LIKE GILBERT DIDNT SEEM LIKE GILBERT AND ANNNE NEEDED TO BE MORE ANNY IF U GET WHAT IM SAYIN
