Chatting with Amy Garvey about Mystery, Love, and Death. And oh, yeah, Buffy
I "met" Amy Garvey when she left a very nice comment on my blog. I contacted her and asked if she would mind doing an interview with me, and to my surprise and delight, she said "yes". Hey, anybody who loves "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" is a good egg in my book. Anyway, here are the results of my interview.... SA: Okay, let's get to the important stuff. So, you love Buffy and Angel - me too! Buffy more than Angel, but David Boreanaz is hot, so I'll just look at him if I run out of things to say. Do you have a favorite episode? It sounds morbid, but I loved when Buffy died ("The Gift"). Now your turn. Just one episode?! Not possible. Top five BtVS episodes: SA: I loved that you wrote your "first" romance story at age 11. Girl meets boy aka college professor? Now that sounds like my kinda story - LOL. Hopefully he wasn't fired for dating a student.... It didn't get that far! I shoudl amend that part of my bio, actually -- I only wrote the beginning, when they meet, and then when she gets to class and realizes he's her professor. SA: And from there you appeared in "Wicked Women Whodunit" with the likes of the truly original MaryJanice Davidson. Your story is a funny mystery with a lot of heat. Have you personally had a day as bad as Lanie Burke? Plenty of them. Although, to be fair, none of them included a dead body. SA: "I Love You To Death". Wasn't that the name of a movie? Do your stories compare in any way? Tell us more..... I think so, although I had forgotten about that when I titled the book. I've never actually seen the movie, so I'm sure they're nothing alike -- plus my I Love You to Death is three loosely linked novellas in one volume, so it's three love stories/mysteries! SA: You have an upcoming anthology with the lovely and divine Lori Foster and equally lovely & divine Erin McCarthy - two of my favorites. Tell us a little about your story in "Bad Boys of Summer" - and tell us a lot more about your bad boy in the book. Is the bad boy your hero of choice? My story, called "Wish you Were Here," is about a photographer who hires a really hunky carpenter to turn a dilapidated shed into a studio for her. He fascinates her, partly because he seems to be keeping some secrets...which she would love to learn. The hero is really searching for redemption in this story -- it's pretty hot, but it's not as funny. (Sounds realllly good). SA: Bad boys. Extremely important topic that your fans clamor to know the answer to. Who are your favorite bad boys, the ones that rock your world, and what makes it so? I think there's a lot to the bad boy "image" that's attractive, but truly bad boys (criminals, abusers) are obviously not what you want. Spike is a great bad boy, because he still needs to be loved, and he's searching for a brand of redemption, too. Other bad boys? I have a thing for rockers, again because of that image, I guess ( Lenny Kravitz, the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl), but none of them are actually dangerous guys. As far as I know. ;-) (I like Amy's choices <g>) I think another part of the bad boy allure is the idea that here's a tough guy who's going to show you, and only you, his soft side. It's not easy, especially with three kids. But at least I'm never bored! Of course, I also don't update my blog as often as I should... SA: Any chance you can attend Lori Foster's June get-together in Ohio? It is tons of fun, especially for us readers, and you would be a big success. I doubt it, although I shouldln't say for sure. I can only do so may trips in a year between the kids, my darling husband, and deadlines! SA: So Amy, what's in your I-Pod? CD player? Most watched DVD? I don't have an iPod! But I do have hundreds and hundreds of CDs. Right now I'm adoring Anna Nalick's CD, Wreck of the Day, as well the soundtrack to HBO's Deadwood. Oh, and the new Foo Fighters! SA: Do you have a favorite line from a movie? SA: Family - a big part of life. How does your family inspire you? Do your kids like to read? My family doesn't necessarily inspire my plots or characters, but they're a huge source of strength and happiness. My husband is also a great partner when it comes to helping me out of plot holes. The boys like to read, although show them a video game and they'll always put down their books. But Sara, who's two, adores books, and reading is a bedtime ritual. SA: Which author's books are in your tbr pile? What kinds of books did you read growing up? How do you feel about the current explosion of the erotica/romantica lines? My TBR pile right now includes Gayle Callen, Christina Dodd, an old Jennifer Crusie, as well as a lot of non-romance authors -- Martha Grimes, Ruth Rendell, Tanith Lee, Jodi Picoult. The current explosion of erotica/romantica is definitely market-driven -- publishers don't put out books if there's not a demand for them. That said, I don't think every house needs a specific line -- look at how the demand for paranormals has ebbed and flowed over the years. Sexy books are fine with me, but I'm a fan of romantica rather than straight erotica -- I don't like to read about characters having sex if I don't have an emotional connection to them, and they don't have an emotional connection to each other. Thank you, Amy, for taking the time to answer my questions. I really enjoyed getting to "chat" with you, and I'm really looking forward to your story in "The Bad Boys of Summer".

My review of "I Love You to Death" by Amy Garvey
"My Love Life is Killing Me"
Recently divorced, Alex Ramsay reluctantly goes out to meet Matt Crawford, a blind date set up by a well-meaning friend. After sitting at his table for a few moments, Alex is instantly smitten, only to discover he's not Matt after all, but instead P.I. John Tanner. Matt turns up dead, Tanner's investigating, and Alex is falling in love. Who knew death could be so romantic? "Dial M for Mortified"
Darcy Bennett needed a plan to get her struggling coffee shop in the black, so she decided to host a "blind date" night in the hopes of drawing in new business. The event turns out better than she imagined, especially when sexy reporter Noah Gleason seems interested in getting to know her better. Things are going smoothly until a dead body shows up, leaving Darcy to wonder if Noah is hanging around to be with her, or to find "the next big story".... "Dead Men Don't Write Checks" Franny Gabriel hates change. It just really bothers her that pieces of history are demolished in order to make way for the new. She's decided to fight back, in a truly civilized and dignified fashion - as the blind date of her adversary. Only Franny doesn't expect to like Theo Landry as much as she does. He's a good guy, who happens to be absolutely gorgeous - what woman in their right mind can think about history while being kissed senseless in the present? The only thing to ruin her mood is a little murder..... If I have one complaint about these stories, it's that they are too short! Amy Garvey has written three novellas proving that not all blind dates have to end in disaster. Instead, they can be sweet and sexy encounters that lead to something longer lasting. Amy's characters are endearing, and you will surely find yourself with a smile on your face as these couples try to deal with feelings of forever while still on their first date. While the general overall feeling is light-hearted, it doesn't make the love scenes any less heated. In fact, you may need to turn on the a/c for some of them. I would definitely read another book by this author.

Wednesday, February 22, 2006:
How much does it cost to buy two eyes? Hi, my name is Julie "Christie". My 24 month old (as of Jan ?06) son Josh was born missing his right eye and blind in his left. It is a rare genetic disorder called bilateral microphthalmia. In August 2005, Josh had to have his left eye surgically removed due to glaucoma. Josh was left with no eyes. But in November 2005, Josh received his first set of prosthetic eyes! ( See picture) With donated items from friends, family, etc., my husband and I have started selling items on E-bay and Craig?s List to raise money for his 2 prosthetic eyes. Each eye costs between $2000 - $3000 each. Josh will need two new sets of eyes every year for the next 12 years to accommodate him as he grows. That comes to at least $48,000! Because I can no longer work, due to the amount of therapies that Josh requires weekly, this has been a huge financial strain on us. As crazy as it seems, insurance companies do not cover these costs because they consider the prosthetic eyes as cosmetic and therefore unnecessary. Josh has had 2 surgeries so far and will require a minimum of 8 more cranio-facial surgeries to help the bones in his skull and face grow and develop properly. Because of the immature development of his optic nerves, Josh will never be able to see. I hope that you will help us in our effort! Please contact us at hgolden2@sbcglobal.net, if you would like to donate items for us to sell. If you live local, I will gladly pick up items. We live in Simi Valley, CA, USA. ************************************ So authors... if you want to help out, and you have a book you can spare, especially one that is hard to find or out of print, please consider sending it to Christie. (but any book will do!) If you're unpublished and just want to contribute, that would be wonderful. You can send to: Christie Goldenberg 615 Overlook Road Simi Valley, CA 93065 What you send directly is different from what I hope to collect at the Get Together in June, so if you're able, please send something now, and also drop a book into a donation box at the gathering. If you're unable to contribute, I understand. I know we all have budgets and individual circumstances. Thank you everyone for reading this! If you do send to Christie, please let me know just so I can keep track of our success. Hugs to all of you! My review: "Champagne Rules" by Susan Lyons
They were two strangers who met on a nude beach in Crete, drawn to each other and the magic of the location. Without words, and overcome by their powerful attraction, they find a cave where they spend the afternoon making love. Afterwards, they go their separate ways with the agreement that it was just a moment in time for both of them, and not meant to last beyond that afternoon.... Only Suzanne Brennan and Jaxon Navarre haven't forgotten each other. It's now four years later, and they still dream about that cave, and the intense connection between them. During a discussion with the the rest of the Awesome Foursome, Suzanne, who lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, confesses to her girlfriends about the most amazing sexual experience she's ever had. The encounter has affected her so strongly that it doesn't take much for her friends to convince her to try and contact her dream lover. Placing an ad on the internet, she is bombarded with cheesy and suggestive emails, but before long, she comes across one that convinces her she has found her man... It seems rather unbelievable, but San Francisco resident Jaxon does come across the internet ad from the woman who rocked his world in Crete. Unable to get their interlude out of his head, he's searched the internet periodically over the years for a glimpse of his sexy blonde. Not really thinking he'd find her, he's more than a little surprised to read an ad that sounds like the unforgettable experience he had so long ago.... After contact is made, and names are exchanged, they agree they both would like to see each other again. Jaxon flies to Vancouver to meet Suzanne, and once again it happens on a beach. The attraction is just as hot as it was all those years ago, and before the night is over, the two indulge in some very sexy and erotic lovemaking. Unable to give up their physical relationship, they both agree to the "Champagne Rules"; to keep their relationship fun and effervescent and not go flat. This means not talking about their personal life, even to the point of not talking about what they each do for a living. The situation works for both of them: Jaxon is on the fast track to becoming a partner in his law firm and Suzanne has set her sights on marrying a Ward Cleaver- type of man, someday far in the future. Neither one of them is looking for a relationship, just great sex. But life doesn't always go according to plan.... This is Susan Lyons' first published story, and it holds a lot of promise for her future career. Writing for the erotic Aphrodisia line from Kensington, Susan has included a lot of the heat associated with today's stories of erotica, but she does it in a more traditional way. Jaxon and Suzanne have an exclusive relationship, with no additional partners to muddy the waters. Fans who like to read hot, yet traditional romances will enjoy this story a lot. I respect how the story touches on the interracial aspects of their relationship but doesn't dwell on them. Jaxon and Suzanne are just two people extremely attracted to each other, and unwilling to believe that the magic between them could lead to love. Other obstacles are realistic and believable, though they may have been resolved a bit too quickly by the end of the story. However there is a lot of substance to this story which allows readers to understand more about each character's choices in their lives. If you're like me, you'll be anxious to read more about the Awesome Foursome, and to find out more about Jaxon and Suzanne. I'm really looking forward to the next addition: "Hot In Here".

Another gem from Erin McCarthy
"HIGH STAKES: A TALE OF VEGAS VAMPIRES" Doesn't this cover look awesome? I told Erin the heroine looks like Drew Barrymore. The release date is August 1, 2006. I can't wait! ----------------------------------------------------------- From the USA Today bestselling author, a vampire-meets-girl story set in the city that never sleeps-except during daylight.
He's a bloodsucking freak of nature. But, unlike other politicians, Ethan Carrick is actually a nice guy. Not to mention a very hot, wealthy, casino-owning vampire. It's an election year for vampires, which means he'll first have to escape his opponent's hit men. Then he'll have to find a suitable First Lady, preferably here in Vegas.
Brittany Baldizzi fits the bill. She's smart, pretty- and sweeter than a glass of diabetic O-Negative. But her protective sister Alexis steps in with a message for Ethan: Bite me. It's then that he realizes it's the sexy, no-nonsense Alexis who raises his stake. And as much as she denies it, Alexis wouldn't mind a romp in the coffin with him. But can a mere mortal, even one who risks her life for him, make a centuries-old, womanizing vampire feel something entirely new?

An Interview with the Devil (aka BadBarb)
(Looks like she's thinking of new ways to torture people.....) Okay, we all know her. BadBarb. The name strikes fear into the hearts of many authors, and even some readers. The thought of a dark, dank and dreary closet with nothing but 1/2 an energy bar (if you're lucky!) and a weak sliver of light as one slaves over a manual typewriter is enough to make the steeliest backbone melt. Trapped for weeks, sometimes months on end, with round-the-clock creepy-looking guards - - and Barb clones - - it's an existence one wishes never to experience.... Now, in her first blog interview, we learn about the monster....er, mastermind behind.... the Closet. SA: BadBarb. You are infamous in the writing community, even having been quoted by RT magazine. What would you say is the secret to your success? BadBarb: I really don't know. I am still surprised when I get quoted. SA: Give us a little history, if you will. Where did the name "BadBarb" come from and is that person still with us? BadBarb: Yes, the nice lady who gave me the nickname Bad Barb was none other then Stella Cameron. Before I got into the review stuff and joined with Writerspace, my friend Janey (better known as Imp) and I were arguing over who would win a prize Diana Palmer was giving away at the time. We kept saying what we would do, and I forget what I said but Stella said I was bad, just plain Bad Barb and the name stuck. :) I have since tried to live up to it. :) SA: Who are some of the illustrious authors that have spent time in your dungeon? What exactly do you think you've accomplished by keeping them deprived of the necessities to survive? BadBarb: Let's see. Stella Cameron, Lori Foster, Dianne Castell, Lucy Monroe, Christine Feehan, Angela Knight, Kate Douglas, Tori Carrington, Leslie Kelly, Julie Elizabeth Leto, Carly Phillips, Janelle Denison, Ronda Thompson just to name a few. :) As for my accomplishments, Lori hit #16 on Ny Times list just as an example. :) SA: Who do you currently have your sights set on to add to your collection? SA: What are you most proud of? What are your goals for the future? SA: You've had others (namely MaryF and Tee) try to foil you at every turn. Do you find them a challenge and that is why they haven't ended up in the closet, or are they too strong to turn to the darkside? BadBarb: It is sort of a cat and mouse thing. :) I have plans for those two and whoever else tries to help. SA: Which hotties have spent time in your closet, and why? What kind of hottie does it take to melt the heart of a soldier? SA: Speaking of which: Clay Aiken. Such goodness and light in the face of darkness. What is the attraction and have you ever met him in person? What would you say/have you said to such a pure soul? BadBarb: Clay is just an amazing performer. I have never met him in person, but I have gotten as close as his bus. hehe I don't know what I would say to him yet though. hehe SA: ARCs!!!! ARCs, ARC's and more ARC's. How do you manage to obtain so many and what is it with you and sharing, anyway????? BadBarb: I am on a few reviewers lists, including Berkley, Changeling Press, Loose Id and a lot of authors. :) ///achooo Sharing is ok for french fries, cookies but Arcs heck no. SA: The Tease. The Torture. The sly little digs. These are the areas in which you exceed and go right to the top of the class. How would you advise others to sling arrows with such precison and skill? (okay, enquiring, and envious, minds want to know) BadBarb: Just say enough to whet the appetite without giving too much away. Like for instance, in Lucy Monroe's AND ABLE, the scene in the hot tub will have you not only reaching for ice cubes and standing outside without a coat in the middle of winter, but have you squirming too. (Note: If anyone was ever unsure of how Barb came across her name, I think that question has just been answered) SA: Um, do you sleep? BadBarb: Yeah :) SA: Just what is it with you and Pepsi anyway, and why do you hate coconut? BadBarb: I have been drinking pepsi since I was a kid, nothing like the fizz and taste of an ice cold pepsi. (SA: Unless it's the taste of COKE!) Coconut is just plain gross. SA: Let's backtrack a little bit. Share. Oh, bless you. Here's a Kleenex. SHARE. Bless you! Boy, you really are allergic to that word! (Note: if there is one thing you know about Barb, it's her inability, or unwillingness to share.) SA: Barb, any parting shots, er, words of wisdom? BadBarb: Hmmm, I have had lots of fun so far and plan on more fun. SA: Well, this has truly been enlightening. Thank you for your time, and can't wait to see ya in June! BadBarb: I can't wait for June either, I am getting a new pair of devil horns. Just waiting for the place I want to order it from have it available. :) Soooo, there you have it folks, from the devil, um, source, herself. Thanx Barb, for being such a great sport and letting me interrogate you (at the risk of getting my own closet) and for sharing your inner thoughts with us. You are truly and original, and it's been very enlightening. Here's hoping you all sleep well tonight......

My Favorite Movie "East of Eden" (1955)
Without a doubt, " East of Eden" is my favorite movie of all time. No other movie has ever resonated with me like this one has. Ever. Based on the novel by John Steinbeck, " East of Eden" is like a re-telling of the Cain and Abel story. The movie is set in 1917 Salinas, California, right before the U.S. entered World War I. James Dean plays the part of Cal (representing Cain, the underappreciated son), who vies for the attention of his father again his perfect, obedient brother Aron (Abel). Only no matter what Cal does, it's never good enough for his father. To add to his misery is his love for his brother's girlfriend Abra, who seems to understand Cal more than his own family does. Believing he is "bad", Cal sets out to find the source of that badness. It appears in the form of his mother, whom he was told had died when they were young. Finally Cal understands that part of himself, but he is more determined than ever to win his father's love. Thinking he's found a way, Cal is devastated when his father rejects the gift Cal presents him with, and he lashes out at the one person his father loves most: Aron. Cal shows Aron the truth about their mother, and the truth pushes Aron over the edge. Now Cal is forced to face the consequences of his actions, and what he decides to do is take responsibility and become a man. Obviously, James Dean's performance is what is so mesmerizing, how he holds nothing back and allows you to see his vulnerability, his pain, and his hope. But what I liked most about it was that his moody, intense Cal, was the one that could be depended on when things got tough. Because he had always been told how "bad" he was, he had no illusions. So when his father becomes ill, it's Cal who is willing to take care of him, to face reality and deal with his "cross to bear". I love that. What I mean is, I love that the one person who seems to be the one least likely you can count on ends up being the only one who sticks it out instead of shirking his responsibilities. I love that finally, he's made to feel needed, and in turn loved, and now he can be at peace. It's so simple, to just love someone, thorns and all, and with a little nurturing, watch that love flourish into something stable and solid and real. I've seen this movie dozens of times, and I still get tingles watching the scene at the top of the ferris wheel, and it still makes me ache to see Cal try to win his father's love. I find some new detail everytime I watch it. Now that is a classic.

My review: "Jude's Law" by Lori Foster
Lori Foster tells wonderfully heartwarming and sexy stories rich with earthy alpha heroes and the strong, tenderhearted women that love them. Another of Foster's trademarks is the emphasis on the importance of family, no matter how nconventional that family may be. It is one of my favorite things about her stories. " Jude's Law" is no exception. Former SBC fighter and famous actor Jude Jamison now resides in Stillbrook, Ohio, where he's found a woman who he can't get out of his mind. May Price is that woman. She drives him crazy - with lust. But she refuses to have anything to do with him. Jude is frustrated by May's rejection. He can't figure it out - is it because of his scandalous past? His Hollywood lifestyle and all the photographers that follow him around? He doesn't think he can stand it anymore. How can she really believe they're just friends when all he can think about is her ample curves and taking her to bed? May has a lot on her plate with owning her own art gallery and taking care of the family that doesn't appreciate her like they should. She can't believe that anyone as sexy and as famous as Jude could be interested in someone like her, but that doesn't mean she's not interested. In fact, May is very attracted to Jude, but knows that she cannot let her heart be broken. So she rejects his advances. Repeatedly. Then something happens that May knows she can't handle on her own, so she turns to the one person who can help: Jude. As upset as he is by May's rejection, he can't force himself to turn her away when she comes to him for help. He adores her soft brown eyes, her lush and full figure, her honesty, the way she really sees him, not the movie star. Circumstances have May moving into Jude's fortress of a house, where they able to learn more about each other and the threat that has put them all in danger. Dealing with the threat together, and letting each other see how they truly are opens their eyes and their hearts as they fall in love and realize that they can have a future together - one filled with love, laughter, and family. Despite Jude's rather unique occupation, this story is written in such a way that you will totally believe a movie star can fall in love with a small-town woman with a generous heart. Jude may be gorgeous, but he has honor, discipline, and loyalty to those he cares about. May is a full-figured woman who doesn't apologize for her appearance - she's not willing to sacrifice her pleasures so she can look like a walking skeleton. In this day and age where younger women are getting smaller and smaller, it's a welcome and much needed change to find a positive role model for women. I applaud Lori Foster's portrayal of May and am glad she didn't turn her into a shrinking violet, but instead shows us how strong and resilient and caring she truly is, and how she embraces her sexuality when she and Jude finally do give into their mutual attraction. Their love scenes are very hot and sensuous, and the intimacy they share brings them closer together emotionally, which makes it an even sexier read. Despite the current erotica trends in publishing today, Lori Foster knows that nothing is hotter than romance in a relationship, and she excels at it. One of many highlights in this story is the acerbic and hilarious character of Denny, a former SBC trainer and Jude's employee. Then there's the hint we see of the future romance for May's best friend Ashley and a a tantalizing mystery that is bound to affect the people in Stillbrook. You will just have to read "Jude's Law" to see what that might be. Lori breaks a lot of stereotypes in this book, such as those about fighters, actors, weight, and family. It is a refreshing story that you will want to read again and again.

Erin McCarthy: "You Don't Know Jack" (10/06)
LOVE. SEX. DESTINY. AND A SIX-FOOT-FOUR PSYCHIC IN A BRIDESMAID'S DRESS? HONEY, YOU DON'T KNOW JACK.... Jamie Peters no longer believes in true love. True idiots, true scumbags, true moochers - these she believes in wholeheartedly, and she's got the checkered dating history to prove it. So she's she's more than a little skeptical when her cross-dressing psychic tells her she's about to meet her soulmate - during an accident. Yeah, sounds about right. And then it happens. A knight in shining armor steps between her and a mugger on a subway platform. Just a regular, honest, upright Jack. The kind they don't make anymore.... Jonathon Davidson doesn't believe in destiny - or lying to beautiful women, as a rule. But now that Jamie thinks he's just an ordinary guy, how can he possibly tell her that he's really A) her roommate's brother B) a millionaire to boot and C) the jerk who's investigating her application to his grandfather's charitable trust because she may be involved in something illegal? Yeah, rhetorical question. He can't. Not until he knows what's going on. Besides, it would require being able to resist Jamie's luscious curves long enough to say, "Hi, my name is Big Liar. Let's get naked." Sometimes, destiny sucks... Somewhere between truth and flat-out-let's-talk-about-this-waaay-later fiction, between fate and delicious accidental insanity, lies a whole lot of mind-blowing sex, delirious passion, unfortunate sundresses, fighting, deception, big mistakes and small hopes, and two people are about t discover that everything happens for a reason... ["All my Brava covers have been fantastic, but I especially love how this one captures the tone of the title. And this will probably be the only title I ever manage to come up on my own.
